Book excerpt: There are several areas of qualitative agreement among the non-linear properties of the helical instability in electron-ion and electron-hole plasmas. These include (1) a similar dependence of E on B throughout the range of B up to several times Bth; (2) regions of a linear increase in frequency as a function of B; (3) the reoccurrence of a nearly homogeneous plasma at some B> Bth; (4) turbulent behavior under highly supercritical conditions; (5) the form of the dependence of the helix self-B on the applied B; and (6) the occurrence of two magnetic field thresholds in a constantly increasing dB/dt. Some nonlinear properties of electron-hole plasmas appear to be unique: (1) the occurrence of several frequency modes as a function of B including three distinct types of transitions between these modes and (2) the relatively large self magnetic fields produced by the helical instability. Book excerpt: Annotation The study of non-neutral plasmas in traps is the keystone that connects parts of atomic and molecular physics, fluid dynamics, condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and antimatter physics with a variety of technologies such as atomic clocks, cyclotron mass spectrometers and a new standard for a pressure gauge, coherent radiation sources, accelerators, and fusion. Among the topics in 32 papers: long ion plasma confinement times with a "rotating wall"; pressure measurement using a pure electron plasma; and laser-cooled trapped-ion experiments at NIST. This book was released on 1964 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report consists essentially of two parts. In the first part the non-linear polarization currents excited by a plane electromagnetic wave in an isotropic plasma are discussed. The second part is devoted to a calculation of the radiation fields established by harmonic currents excited inside an inhomogeneous plasma half-space with linearly increasing electron density. The essential result of this work lies in a thorough examination of the most important harmonic current sources produced by nonlinear interactions between an electromagnetic wave and a plasma, and in the detailed study of an example of radiation effects from these current sources. The discussion of nonlinear current sources is rather complete and general, first as individual effects, then as a whole. The main limitation lies in the smallness of the parameters required for application of the perturbation method. However, this requirement is likely to be met in most of the physical problems encountered, and therefore, the method used does not severely limit the range of its application in real situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The character and stability of electrostatic electron waves which propagate both parallel to B (wavenumber beta) and perpendicular to B (azimuthal mode number l) in non-neutral plasmas in cylindrical geometry are studied. The background ions are taken to be infinitely massive and so provide a partial neutralization of the unperturbed electron space charge; this neutralization ranges from the completely unneutralized electron plasma case to the more familiar case of a completely neutral plasma. It is found that the axisymmetric mode (l = 0) is stable for arbitrary radial density variation when the charge density is not too high. For l> or = 1 and electron and ion densities constant out to r = a and zero beyond, the system is stable for all frequencies independent of the degree of neutralization and the location of a conducting outer wall. The dispersion relation is analogous to that for a neutral plasma permitting separate low and high frequency propagation bands. For low frequencies and low, nonincreasing electron, ion, and net charge densities, it is found that the presence of a resonant layer (zero frequency as seen by the electrons) within the electron cloud is necessary but not sufficient for instability. In general, finite axial wavenumber increases the tendency towards stability. (Author).

Book excerpt: TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Book excerpt: This book builds on the fluid and kinetic theory of equilibria and waves presented in a companion textbook, Basic Space Plasma Physics (by the same authors), but can also serve as a stand-alone text. It extends the field covered there into the domain of plasma instability and nonlinear theory. The book provides a representative selection of the many possible macro- and microinstabilities in a space plasma, from the Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz to electrostatic and electromagnetic kinetic instabilities. Their quasilinear stabilization and nonlinear evolution and their application to space physics problems are treated. The chapters on nonlinear theory include nonlinear waves, weak turbulence and strong turbulence, all presented from the viewpoint of their relevance to space plasma physics. Special topics include auroral particle acceleration, soliton formation and caviton collapse, anomalous transport, and the theory of collisionless shocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth’s Electric Field provides you with an integrated and comprehensive picture of the generation of the terrestrial electric fields, their dynamics and how they couple/propagate through the medium. The Earth’s Electric Field provides basic principles of terrestrial electric field related topics, but also a critical summary of electric field related observations and their significance to the various related phenomena in the atmosphere. For the first time, Kelley brings together information on this topic in a coherent way, making it easy to gain a broad overview of the critical processes in an efficient way. If you conduct research in atmospheric science, physics, atmospheric chemistry, space plasma physics, and solar terrestrial physics, you will find this book to be essential reading. The only book on the physics of terrestrial electric fields and their generation mechanisms, propagation and dynamics–making it essential reading for scientists conducting research in upper atmospheric, ionospheric, magnetospheric and space weather Covers the processes related to electric field generation and electric field coupling in the upper atmosphere along with providing new insights about electric fields generated by sources from sun to mud Focuses on real-world implications—covering topics such as space weather, earthquakes, the effect on power grids, and the effect on GPS and communication devices
