Book excerpt: Direct Behavior Rating (DBR) has emerged as a useful assessment method to identify behavioral risk and monitor behavioral progress. The development of an online training module has provided an option for low cost training accessible to a wide variety of users at their convenience. Although evaluation of the DBR online training module has demonstrated improved rater accuracy following completion, reliability of obtained scores has not been fully explored. An improvement in reliability of scores is desired to allow for flexible use across raters and increased efficiency in decision-making. In this study, four teachers simultaneously rated the activity engagement and disruptive behavior of six children during their ice skating activity at a summer day camp. Ratings were analyzed within a generalizability theory (GT) framework. Results suggest that completion of the online training module may result in some improvement in the reliability of data generated from DBR-SIS.

Book excerpt: Direct Behavior Ratings (DBRs) are an emerging tool for gathering data to use in decisions within both traditional and expanded roles for school psychologists. The present study contains two components examining DBRs. The first component uses Generalizability Theory (GT) to examine agreement between two raters using DBRs in two different classrooms, one with trained raters and the other with untrained raters. The second component uses a focus group to solicit raters views regarding DBRs, raters views regarding a DBR training module, and the reasoning behind raters ratings. The G studies provide evidence that rater load (i.e., the number of students rated at one time) may impact rater disagreement; however, training had no discernable effect on reliability. Results from the focus group indicate raters found the DBRs mechanically easy to fill out, but that they had difficulty rating and differentiating between Respectful and Disruptive Behavior. For school psychologists in practice, the results of the present research suggest characteristics of the sample of students being rated (i.e., number of students) should be considered when interpreting DBR scores. For further development of DBR items, additional constructs suited to educators needs, such as a construct targeting social skills, may be beneficial.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the perceived usage of Direct Behavior Rating (DBR) among school psychologists through acceptability, feasibility, understanding and system support. In addition, specific preferences of DBR (e.g. types of behavior to rate, length of observation and appropriate rater) were examined. DBR tools involve rating defined student behaviors following a specified observation period. One critical assumption of the DBR is that School Psychologist and teachers view it as acceptable and are oriented towards using it. A review of the literature suggested that acceptability, feasibility, understanding and support from the system should be considered when determining the perceived usage of an intervention. Participants included a sample of 82 members of the National Association of School Psychologists. The participants were mailed a survey packet that included (a) cover letter explaining the study and inviting them to participate in the study, (b) demographic questionnaire, (c) questionnaire about previous DBR experience, (d) a brief description of DBR including a case study, (e) a preference assessment and (f) the Usage Rating Profile for Assessments (URP-A). The preference assessment asked participants to select specific parts and procedures of the DBR that they preferred (e.g. type/severity of problem to rate). Results indicated that participants reported the DBR to be an acceptable and feasible assessment tool. In addition, they reported that they understood the procedures of DBR and that they would require the support of their system, including co-workers. Overall, scores indicated that the participants perceived DBR as a usable tool for conducting behavior assessments. Results of the preference assessment were analyzed and compared with the previous preference assessment studies. Overall, results were consistent with the previous studies.

Book excerpt: Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II summarizes information on adaptive behavior and skills as well as general issues in adaptive behavior assessment with the goal of promoting sound assessment practice during uses, interpretations, and applications of the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II. Adaptive behavior and skills refer to personal qualities associated with the ability to meet one’s personal needs such as communication, self-care, socialization, etc. and those of others. Data from measures of adaptive behavior have been used most commonly in assessment and intervention services for persons with mental retardation. However, the display of adaptive behaviors and skills is relevant to all persons. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II (ABAS-II) provides a comprehensive, norm-referenced assessment of the adaptive behavior and skills of individuals from birth through age 89. The comprehensive natures of the ABAS-II, ease in administration and scoring, and wide age range have resulted in its widespread use for a large number of assessment purposes. The book provides practical information and thus serves as a valuable resource for those who use the ABAS-II. Assists in the functional use of the ABAS-II Provides case studies illustrating use of the ABAS-II in comprehensive assessment and intervention planning Reviews scholarship on adaptive behaviors and skills Describes legal, ethical, and other professional standards and guidelines that apply to the use of the ABAS-II and other measures of adaptive behavior Discusses the use of the ABAS-II with autism, mental retardation; young children and those in elementary and secondary school; as well as incarcerated persons being evaluated for possible mental retardation

This book was released on 2017 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that mental health issues in students often impact their educational performance. Internalizing problems, such as behaviors related to depression and anxiety, are less likely to be referred for school support. However, only 12-13% of schools screen for mental health risks, and current screening tools for mental health may be burdensome to school districts due to costs and lengthy administration times. The present study evaluated the criterion-related validity and screening accuracy of data derived from Direct Behavior Rating Single Item Scales (DBR-SIS) to evaluate its use as an efficient screener for depression and anxiety in schools. The study included 6 middle school teachers who completed DBR-SIS, and 114 seventh and eighth grade students who completed self-report rating scales for depression and anxiety. Results showed adequate coefficients in support of criterion validity of DBR-SIS. Additionally, results included preliminary support for the use of DBR-SIS in screening for depression and anxiety.

Book excerpt: Generally recognized as the standard work in its field, Behavioral, Social, and Emotional Assessment of Children and Adolescents is a comprehensive guide for conducting conceptually sound, culturally responsive, and ecologically oriented assessments of students’ social and emotional behavior. Written for graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in the fields of school psychology, child clinical psychology, and special education, it will also be of interest to those in related disciplines. Building on the previous editions, this fifth edition includes updated references to DSM-5 and federal standards as well as an integrated approach to culturally competent assessment throughout the text. In Part I, Foundations and Methods of Assessment, the author provides a general foundation for assessment practice and outlines basic professional and ethical issues, cultural considerations, and classification and diagnostic problems. Part II, Assessment of Specific Problems, Competencies, and Populations, includes material on assessing specific social–emotional behavior domains, including externalizing problems, internalizing problems, social skills and social–emotional strengths, and the unique needs of young children. A chapter on school-wide screening methods was also added with this edition. By weaving together the most recent research evidence and common application issues in a scholarly yet practical matter, Behavioral, Social, and Emotional Assessment of Children and Adolescents continues to be the pre-eminent foundation for assessment courses.
