Book excerpt: This study explored whether there is a difference in effect between direct and indirect suggestion as a methods by which individuals enter and experience an altered state. Each of the two methods of induction were tailored and shaped to the individual and later explored by a qualitative methodology. the main purpose of this study was to find but if there are differences in the hypnotic experiences based on the method of entry. A second purpose was to explore differences in how the individual experiences relaxation while in an altered state. Quantitative research has been used to study these two methods and has led to the discovery of no significant differences in the interaction of hypnotizability level and suggestive wording, effortless when entering a trance, enjoyment, relaxation, active, worried, and swept away. This study differs from previous research in three ways. First, this study used a qualitative method to allow the individual freedom to describe the experience, as well as to explore those descriptions. Based on this information, I was able to understand the individual's experience from his or her frame of reference. Second, in this study I tailored each induction to the participant's goals, needs and resources as determined in pre-trance dialogues. Third, unlike previous studies that relied on taped inductions and paper and pencil instruments, I was present to perform each induction, as well as pre- and post-trance dialogues. I conclude that there are differences between the two approaches. As a result of the direct approach, the participants experienced mostly physical sensations, less curiosity and willingness to explore, less new experiences, and the experiences were more familiar and easy to describe. the experiences in the indirect approach were unique, spontaneous and often difficult to describe. I believe that the thematic differences reported between both experiences was due to more of a personal involvement and distinct sensation of shift in the indirect experience than in the direct experience. the uniqueness of the individual is important in terms of his past, current concerns and relationship to the hypnotist.

Book excerpt: The age-old notion of ‘hypnotic induction’ receives a fresh look from notable scholars from Canada, England, Sweden, and the USA in this book. These scholars represent a breadth of theoretical perspectives: cognitive-behavioral, Ericksonian, psychoanalytic, and trance-state. It is well known that a wide range of hypnotic induction protocols is used to prepare individuals to enhance their receptivity to test or clinical suggestions. However, despite its popularity of use, it appears that little is known about its relevancy and boundary conditions either for testing for hypnotisability or for enhancing clinical efficacy. In this volume, the authors reflect on issues surrounding its definitions, relevancy, possible components, and approaches; they also suggest considerations and strategies for optimizing inductions. This book will be of benefit to both newcomers to the field and seasoned researchers and clinicians alike – it can stimulate new thinking and research about this important, but often taken for granted, notion of hypnotic induction. This book was originally published as a special issue of the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis.
