This book examines what is known about the major classes of persistent toxic organic pollutants. Agricultural runoff, urban waste, industrial discharge, landfill leachate, and atmospheric deposition, are all to blame. Contamination of the various ecosystems is reviewed, and what is known about the effects of this pollution. This volume provides an invaluable resource for those in environmental research, measurements, and decision making concerning the Great Lakes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erich W. Bretthauer, Chairman of the Exposure and Hazard Assessment Working Group U. s. Environmental Protection Agency Washington, D. C. The efforts of the Exposure and Hazard Assessment Working Group were focused on the exchange of information on a variety of topics including research projects, regulations/statutes, analytical laboratories, and methods of exposure/risk assessment involving CDDs and CDFs. It was evident to the leaders of the Working Group that several of the knowledge voids had to be addressed on a fundamental level before expanded efforts could be made. Several questions needed to be answered: • Who has done research on this topic, and what do the data indicate? • Who is performing research now, and what are their capabilities? • How are other nations addressing this problem, and do they have legislative mandates in place? • Is there a general consensus on the topic? The members of the Working Group believed that these questions could be answered by surveying the major participants in the field of interest. Three principal survey efforts were performed by the Working Group, which collected information on research, regulations/statutes, and analytical laboratories from each of the participating nations. In addition to answering these fundamental questions, these efforts also fulfilled the major objectives of the entire Pilot Study. The collection, analysis, and distribution of information on research projects, regulations/statutes, and analytical laboratories were very useful efforts in helping to fill some of the basic knowledge voids.

Book excerpt: The Great Lakes of North America are one of the most heavily contaminated freshwater ecosystems in the world, yet they support at least one-third of North America's breeding Caspian tern population. To assess the health of this breeding population in relation to organochlorine contaminant (OC) levels, a study was conducted of 10 colonies (6,800 nests) throughout its Great Lakes range in 1991. The study considered residues in relation to reproductive output, diet, and population trends at individual colonies and examined the suitability of this species as a sensitive indicator of the toxic effects of anthropogenic chemicals.

Book excerpt: "During 1989-1992, Canadian wildlife Service (Ontario) collected a total of 1495 eggs from fish-eating colonial birds from 50 colonies throughout the Great Lakes to measure the levels of 86 chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds, and the lipid concentrations present. These data were generated as part of a monitoring program started in 1970 to understand the temporal and spatial trends in environmental contaminant levels in biota of the Great Lakes"--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: A practical approach to environmental chemistry, Elements of Environmental Chemistry, 3rd Edition provides readers with the fundamentals of environmental chemistry and a toolbox for putting them into practice. This is a concise, accessible, and hands-on volume designed for students and professionals working in the chemical and environmental sciences. The 3rd Edition has been completely revised and rearranged. The first chapter on tool skills has been expanded to include thermodynamic considerations and measurement issues. The former chapter on the partitioning of organic compounds has been expanded to cover the fates of organic compounds, with an emphasis on developing the readers chemical intuition for predicting a chemicals fate based on structure. The material on lead, mercury, pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, and flame retardants has been expanded and combined into the last chapter and supplemented with more references to the literature. The problem sets have been extended and now include over 130 problems, some of which can be solved using Excel.
