Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Islamic coinage in the Collection is among the most outstanding in private hands, with over 15,000 issues in gold, silver and copper. The coins were issued across the Islamic world, from North Africa to Central Asia and India, in the 7th to the 20th centuries. Many series are represented in larger numbers and in greater variety than in any other collection. Thus, the two-part catalogue will constitute an indispensable reference work for both scholars and students of Islamic numismatics. This volume covers the 13th?20th centuries.0Gold coinage highlights from the later period include a unique dinar minted during the brief reign of the Ilkhanid Musa Khan (1336?7); Mughal dinars of Jahangir?s reign (1569?1627) with signs of the zodiac on the reverse; and a five-piece Qajar treasury set of 50, 20 and 10 tomans. The silver coinage is also extensive.00Part One: The early period - ISBN 9781874780823 0Part Two:The later period - ISBN 9781874780830.
Book Synopsis Dinars and Dirhams by : Michael Bates
Download or read book Dinars and Dirhams written by Michael Bates and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nasser D. Khalili Collection, with it's more than 8,500 coins, ranks as one of the world's largest collections in the field of Islamic numismatics. The coins, include no less than 500 unpublished types in terms of date and mint. While these occur in the better-known categories, such as Abbasid dirhams, in some cases they represent completely new series, such as those of the emirs of 'Athbar in Arabia and the Najahid rulers of Zabid in Yemen. This volume also contains the largest group of Arab and Latin bilingual coins from North Africa. This catalogue, which is by the two leading specialists in the subject, is the first of two volumes devoted to the Collection's numismatic holdings and covers the first Islamic coins and the early medieval period. It provides three types of information: the obverse and reverse of each coin are illustrated in color; catalogue entries provide the requisite statistical information; and the essays at the beginning of each section place the coins in their historical context. Like the other 25 volumes in the series, which will make the entire Collection available to a wider public, it combines lavish production values with academic excellence.

Book Synopsis A Handbook of Islamic Coins by : Michael Broome
Download or read book A Handbook of Islamic Coins written by Michael Broome and published by Trafalgar Square Publishing. This book was released on 1985 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the coinages of the Near and Middle East, issued by the various dynasties that emerged from the religious state established by the Prophet Muhammad. The Islamic coinages of India and South East Asia are excluded because they are derived from different monetary concepts and cultural backgrounds. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main historical changes that are relevant to a general study of the coinage. This is followed by detailed commentary on the coinage with reference to the illustrations. The latter are reproduced at actual size, the better to appreciate the motifs and especially the fine art of calligraphy which is the very epitome of Islamic art. Detailed captions to the illustrations provide a "parallel text" complementing the more general historical material. A particularly valuable feature of the book are the nine maps specially drawn for it which were prepared to show the mint towns of the different dynasties. From these the extent of the spread of Islamic culture and coinage can be well seen.

The Islamic market has long been hampered by two things: the lack of reliable information regarding values due to the historic volatility of auction prices for Islamic coins, and the lack of general reference works with illustrations. This book is an attempt to remedy both these problems. It is intended as an introductory guide, aimed at the general collector; suggestions for further reading are given throughout the book.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Ehrenkreutz is one of the scholars who have placed the study of monetary history of the medieval Middle East on a new footing, integrating numismatic research into the study of economic history. The present volume brings together all his major contributions to this subject. It opens with three essays presenting an overview of economic and monetary changes in the region, then continues with a series of detailed studies on its gold and silver coinages; in these Ehrenkreutz's work on standards of fineness broke new ground. The chronological focus of the volume is from the Umayyad period up to the Ayyubids, but particular emphasis is given to Egypt and to the impact of the Crusades on the monetary history of the Near East. A further set of articles investigates aspects of fiscal administration and the operation of the Cairo mint."
