Book Synopsis Maximinus Thrax by : Paul N. Pearson
Download or read book Maximinus Thrax written by Paul N. Pearson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length biography of the half-barbarian emperor. Maximinus was a Thracian tribesman “of frightening appearance and colossal size” who could smash stones with his bare hands and pull fully laden wagons unaided. Such feats impressed the emperor Severus who enlisted Maximinus into the imperial bodyguard whereupon he embarked on a distinguished military career. Eventually he achieved senior command in the massive Roman invasion of Persia in 232 AD, and three years later he became emperor himself in a military coup—the first common soldier ever to assume the imperial throne. Supposedly more than seven feet tall (it is likely he had a pituitary disorder), Maximinus was surely one of Rome’s most extraordinary emperors. He campaigned across the Rhine and Danube for three years until a rebellion erupted in Africa and the snobbish senate engaged in civil war against him. This is a narrative account of the life and times of the Thracian giant, from his humble origins up to and beyond the civil war of 238 AD. Replete with accounts of treachery, assassination, and civil war, Maximinus Thrax is written for enthusiasts of Roman history and warfare. Book Synopsis Institute of Brilliant Failures by : Paul Louis Iske
Download or read book Institute of Brilliant Failures written by Paul Louis Iske and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You can learn from your failures.' 'Entrepreneurship is trial and error.' These statements are hard to disagree with, but in reality it is not that simple. More than ever, we wish to be successful and erase all traces of mistakes and failures as soon as possible. This is not only a pity, but potentially dangerous as well, says professor Paul Louis Iske. Only when we dare to face what we do wrong can we make a thorough analysis and avoid unnecessary recurrence and disappointments. Fear of failure impedes creative thinking and innovation. This compelling book shows you how to develop a culture of openness in your organization and how failure paradoxically leads to significant progress. Institute of Brilliant Failures teaches you how to recognize recurring failing patterns at an early stage, how to harvest essential learnings and how to embrace uncertainty. Paul Louis Iske is professor of Open Innovation and Business Venturing at the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University (the Netherlands) and Extraordinary Professor of Knowledge Management at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). He is Chief Failure Officer (CFO) at the Institute of Brilliant Failures, and a sought-after international consultant in the areas of innovation, sustainable business models, creativity and knowledge management.
Book Synopsis Hunters, Fishers and Farmers of Eastern Europe, 6000-3000 B.C. by : Ruth Tringham
Download or read book Hunters, Fishers and Farmers of Eastern Europe, 6000-3000 B.C. written by Ruth Tringham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Europe, in this book, embraces the area formally referred to as the ‘Marchlands of Europe’, sometimes as Eastern Central Europe, and which included, when this book was originally published in 1971, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany and Poland. This book presented for the first time the archaeological material related to the prehistory of Central and West Europe, describing the evidence for the earlier prehistory – settlement patterns, means of subsistence and material culture – in the various natural environments of this area. It looks at the Baltic coast, the north and east European plains, the Carpathian mountain ring, the Danube basin and the Adriatic and Black Sea coasts. The evidence for late Mesolithic hunting-fishing groups is examined, their techniques and their reaction to the introduction and spread of agriculturalists, as well as the development and activities of both food-gatherers and food-producers until the early use and manufacture of metal objects. 3000 years of prehistory are covered in a way which is designed to be intelligible and useful to all those who are interested in prehistory and in eastern Europe.

Download or read book The Greek Tyrants written by A. Andrewes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1956 The Greek Tyrants is concerned primarily with an early period of Greek history, when the aristocracies which ruled in the eighth and seventh centuries were losing control of their cities and were very often overthrown by a tyranny, which in its turn gave way to the oligarchies and democracies of the classical period. The tyrants who seized power from time to time in various cities of Greece are analogous to the dictators of our own day and represented for the Greeks a political problem which is still topical: whether it is ever advantageous for a State to concentrate power in the hands of an individual. Those early tyrannies are an important phase of Greek political development: the author discusses here the various military, economic, political, and social factors of the situation which produce them. The book thus forms an introduction to the central period of Greek political history and will be of interest to scholars and researchers of political thought, ancient history, and Greek philosophy.
Book Synopsis Geometric Greece by : J.N. Coldstream
Download or read book Geometric Greece written by J.N. Coldstream and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric Greece has long been the standard work on this absorbing period, which saw the evolution of the Greek city-states, the composition of the Homeric poems, the rise of the great Panhellenic sanctuaries and the first exodus of Greek colonists to southern Italy and Sicily. Professor Coldstream has now fully updated his comprehensive survey with a substantial new chapter on the abundant discoveries and developments made since the book's first publication. The text is presented in three main sections: the passing of the dark ages, c. 900-770 BC; the Greek renaissance, c. 770-700 BC, covered region by region, and the final part on life in eighth century Greece. Its geographical coverage in the Mediterranean ranges from Syria to Sicily, and the detailed archaeological evidence is amplified by reference to literary sources. Highly illustrated, including images of several finds never previously published, this is the essential handbook for anyone studying early Greek antiquity.

Book Synopsis A History of the Greek City States, 700-338 B. C. by : Raphael Sealey
Download or read book A History of the Greek City States, 700-338 B. C. written by Raphael Sealey and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the serious study of Greek history, concentrating more on problems than on narrative. The topics selected have been prominent in modern research and references to important discussions of these have been provided. Outlined are controversial issues of which differing views can be defended. Mr. Sealey's preference is for interpretations which see Greek history as the interaction of personalities, rather than for those which see it as a struggle for economic classes or of abstract ideas. Sealey assumes that the Greek cities of the archaic and classical periods did not inherit any political institutions from the Bronze Age; that the extensive invasions that brought Mycenaean civilization to an end destroyed political habits as effectively as stone palaces. Accordingly, he believes that the Greeks of the historic period were engaged in the fundamental enterprise of building organized society out of nothing. The first chapters of this work deal with the stops taken by the early tyrants, in Sparta and Athens, toward constructing stable organs of authority and of political expression. In later chapters, interest shifts to relations that developed between the states and especially to the development of lasting alliances. Attention is given to the Peloponnesian League, to the Persian Wars, to the Delian League, and to the Second Athenian Sea League of the fourth century.
