Book excerpt: Technischer Bericht aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Energiewissenschaften, , Veranstaltung: Erneuerbare Treibstoffe, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: DME known as dimethyl ether, is a well known chemical substance, the simplest ether, with the chemical structure CH3-O-CH3, consisting of one oxygen atom, two carbon atoms, and six hydrogen atoms. If we us Dimethyl ether as fuel, we recognize, that this fuel brings in one oxygen atom and has six hydrogen atoms. If we compare with methanol (CH3-OH), which has only four hydrogen atoms, dimethyl ether as simplest ether can also be seen as hydrogen carrier. The thermodynamic properties of Dimethyl ether, show that dimethyl ether is liquid at room temperature T=25°C and a pressure of p=6 bar. It is well known that dimethyl ether can be used as an substitute of fossil Diesel fuel, as a synthetic formed Diesel substitute, with highly advanced combustion properties and very low emissions in carbon monoxide(CO), dust and soot and nitrogen oxide(NO2). It easy to handle with the well known LPG (liquid propane gas) technology and can be easily and cheap implemented into heavy Diesel engines. The application of dimethyl ether is wide: transportation, agriculture, civil and rural hotel sector.

Book excerpt: In recent years, emissions from transportation engines have been studied widely because of the contribution of such engines to atmospheric pollution. During this period the amounts of pollutants emitted, the mechanism of their formation, and means of controlling emissions have been investigated in industrial and government laboratories, as well as at universities. The results of these investigations have generally been published as individual articles in journals, transactions, meeting proceedings, and, frequently, in company reports. This proliferation of technical information makes it difficult for workers in the field to keep abreast of all developments. For this reason, the editors felt the need for a book which would survey the existing state of knowledge in wide, albeit selected areas, and would provide a guide to the relevant literature. This book is intended to fulfill this function. It is recognized that all aspects of transportation engine emissions cannot be explored in a single volume. In this book attention is focused primarily on sources and mechanisms of emission formation within the combustion process, and on measurement techniques. Beyond this objective, no re strictions were placed on the authors. Within the framework of the general theme each author has been free to treat his subject as he saw fit. The editors have not strived to replace by uniformity the highly personal and attractive divergences of style. Considerable efforts were made, however, to ensure clarity and minimum overlap between the chapters.

Reasons for this include the desire to reduce the dependency on petroleum-based fuel and, at the same time, to reduce the particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions. Also, there has been interest generated in the diesel engine because of the reduction in greenhouse gases that has been proposed during the 2008-2012 time frame in Europe and the regulations that affect diesel engines in the United States.
