Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in this digital age, many libraries and small archives often use microfilm and microfiche to display important information. There are many types of devices for reading these media, and many ways to use and, unfortunately, misuse these technologies. Librarians and archivists are well-aware of the problems and, if they haven't done so already, are almost certainly considering digitization with its obvious advantages. Yet, there are many pitfalls. Digitizing Microfilm and Microfiche is intended for anyone who has to deal with the economics and technologies of a digitization project. The author, Ronald J. Leach, recently retired from a long-time career as a Computer Science professor, and has had considerable experience with multiple digitization projects for numerous organizations with a variety of systems. He had also worked on microfilm quality assessment for a government agency. Paperback and hardback copies of this short book may be kept as a reference for those libraries and archives that use microfilm and microfiche. These libraries and archives could also use digital editions of the same book on their local internal websites. The companion volume, User Guide to Microfilm and Microfiche, is intended for anyone who is just that, a user of these technologies.

Book excerpt: The ostensible purpose of a library is to preserve the printed word. But for fifty years our country’s libraries–including the Library of Congress–have been doing just the opposite, destroying hundreds of thousands of historic newspapers and replacing them with microfilm copies that are difficult to read, lack all the color and quality of the original paper and illustrations, and deteriorate with age. With meticulous detective work and Baker’s well-known explanatory power, Double Fold reveals a secret history of microfilm lobbyists, former CIA agents, and warehouses where priceless archives are destroyed with a machine called a guillotine. Baker argues passionately for preservation, even cashing in his own retirement account to save one important archive–all twenty tons of it. Written the brilliant narrative style that Nicholson Baker fans have come to expect, Double Fold is a persuasive and often devastating book that may turn out to be The Jungle of the American library system.

Book excerpt: The German Research Association (DFG) is actively involved in preservation of research materials; it takes the view that in preservation, the enormous potential of digitization for access should be combined with the stability of microfilm for long-term storage. A working group was convened to investigate the technical state of digitization of microfilm and the changing compatibilities of microforms and digital conversion forms. This report documents the state of development and offers recommendations to serve as technical and organizational guidelines for filming and conversion projects (particularly those in the public domain). Chapters in this report are: (1) Should Endangered Books and Archives Be Filmed or Digitized?; (2) Requirements for Film Quality and Film Organization with Reference to the Option of Film Digitization; (3) Recommendations for the Digitization of Microfilm; (4) Microfilm and Digital Storage Formats as Compatible Media; (5) Digitizing from the Original; and (6) Cooperation and Exchange of Information; and (7) Suggestions for Further Reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a response to discussions of digitization at meetings of the National Humanities Alliance (NHA). NHA asked the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) to evaluate the experiences of cultural institutions with digitization projects to date and to summarize what has been learned about the advantages and disadvantages of digitizing culturally significant materials. Findings revealed that digitization often raises expectations of benefits, cost reductions, and efficiencies that can be illusory and, if not viewed realistically, have the potential to put at risk the collections and services libraries have provided for decades. One such false expectation--that digital conversion has already or will shortly replace microfilming as the preferred medium for preservation reformatting--could result in irreversible losses of information. This paper defines digital information; identifies weaknesses of digitization as a preservation treatment; discusses the benefits and drawbacks of digital technology for access; and highlights issues institutions must consider in contemplating a digital conversion project. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic story of the rise and collapse of Europe's first great urban experiment The growth of cities around the world in the last two centuries is the greatest episode in our urban history, but it is not the first. Three thousand years ago most of the Mediterranean basin was a world of villages; a world without money or writing, without temples for the gods or palaces for the mighty. Over the centuries that followed, however, cities appeared in many places around the Inland Sea, built by Greeks and Romans, and also by Etruscans and Phoenicians, Tartessians and Lycians, and many others. Most were tiny by modern standards, but they were the building blocks of all the states and empires of antiquity. The greatest--Athens and Corinth, Syracuse and Marseilles, Alexandria and Ephesus, Persepolis and Carthage, Rome and Byzantium--became the powerhouses of successive ancient societies, not just political centers but also the places where ancient art and literatures were created and accumulated. And then, half way through the first millennium, most withered away, leaving behind ruins that have fascinated so many who came after. Based on the most recent historical and archaeological evidence, The Life and Death of Ancient Cities provides a sweeping narrative of one of the world's first great urban experiments, from Bronze Age origins to the demise of cities in late antiquity. Greg Woolf chronicles the history of the ancient Mediterranean city, against the background of wider patterns of human evolution, and of the unforgiving environment in which they were built. Richly illustrated, the book vividly brings to life the abandoned remains of our ancient urban ancestors and serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of even the mightiest of cities.

It provides librarians and archivists with the practical knowledge to understand the process and decision making in the digitization of flat media. Instead of having to learn by trial and error, they will get a well-rounded education of the practical aspects of digitization and have a better understanding of their options. This is the stuff they don’t teach you in school. People can be lured into thinking that all it takes to digitize something is a scanner and some metadata. This guide illustrates the practical aspects of digitization such as: the physical challenges of scanning books without cutting the spine, the differences between a “scanner” that uses a scanning head vs a “scanner” that uses a camera, the different options for workflow for digitized items, and the reasons for choosing one scanner over another for reasons other than price. Digitizing Flat Media: Principles and Practices is intended to give librarians and archivists the benefit a seasoned digitization professional guiding them and helping them figure out exactly what needs to be done when.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images in graphic or printed form can be reduced in size by microcopying. Microform is a collective term for stored microimages. Conventional microform tilms include silver halide, nonsilver diazo, vesicular, and color. Criteria for selecting the proper format include map quadrangle size and reduction ratio. Among several competing types of microforms, only microform and microfiche were judged acceptable for application to wildland maps. Microimages can be digitized by automatic techniques. With careful planning, it is possible to digitize automatically forest map microimages for input to computerized mapping systems. Other benefits of microcopying include a reduction in the cost of handling and shipping the original documents, savings in space, and making archival copies more lasting.

Book excerpt: "In her debut story collection, Kristen Arnett, with dark humor, explores the lives of queer women and their families in the light of the bleak Florida sun. A young dancer suddenly loses language while her family struggles to understand their new roles. A mother endures a horrifying spider bite while camping with her daughters in the backyard. A family reunion goes sour when a group of cousins are left to their own devices. In these ten stories, outward strength is always betrayed by deep vulnerability: these are characters so desperate for family and connection that they often isolate themselves--and sometimes, it's the world isolating them"--Goodreads.com.
