Book excerpt: Coherent detection with subsequent digital signal processing (DSP) is developed, analyzed theoretically and numerically and experimentally demonstrated in various fiber-optic transmission scenarios. The use of DSP in conjunction with coherent detection unleashes the benefits of coherent detection which rely on the preservation of full information of the incoming field. These benefits include high receiver sensitivity, the ability to achieve high spectral-efficiency and the use of advanced modulation formats. With the immense advancements in DSP speeds, many of the problems hindering the use of coherent detection in optical transmission systems have been eliminated. Most notably, DSP alleviates the need for hardware phase-locking and polarization tracking, which can now be achieved in the digital domain. The complexity previously associated with coherent detection is hence significantly diminished and coherent detection is once again considered a feasible detection alternative. In this thesis, several aspects of coherent detection (with or without subsequent DSP) are addressed. Coherent detection is presented as a means to extend the dispersion limit of a duobinary signal using an analog decision-directed phase-lock loop. Analytical bit-error ratio estimation for quadrature phase-shift keying signals is derived. To validate the promise for high spectral efficiency, the orthogonal-wavelength-division multiplexing scheme is suggested. In this scheme the WDM channels are spaced at the symbol rate, thus achieving the spectral efficiency limit. Theory, simulation and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. Infinite impulse response filtering is shown to be an efficient alternative to finite impulse response filtering for chromatic dispersion compensation. Theory, design considerations, simulation and experimental results relating to this topic are presented. Interaction between fiber dispersion and nonlinearity remains the last major challenge deterministic effects pose for long-haul optical data transmission. Experimental results which demonstrate the possibility to digitally mitigate both dispersion and nonlinearity are presented. Impairment compensation is achieved using backward propagation by implementing the split-step method. Efficient realizations of the dispersion compensation operator used in this implementation are considered. Infinite-impulse response and wavelet-based filtering are both investigated as a means to reduce the required computational load associated with signal backward-propagation. Possible future research directions conclude this dissertation.

For example, 32 terabit/s transmission in a ?ber experiment based on this technology was reported in post-deadline session of Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2009. The advancement of the digital coherent technologies will inevitably affect the network architecture in terms of the network resource management for the new generation photonic networks, rather than will simply provide with huge transmission capacity.

Compared with direct detection systems, coherent communication systems can significantly improve the receiver sensitivity and increase the transmission capacity. The ever-increasing demand for greater transport network capacity necessitates continuous upgrade of future fiber transmission systems. In such context, novel advanced DSP schemes are necessary to satisfy the requirements of next-generation coherent optical communication systems.In this thesis, we present several advanced DSP techniques to cope with both linear and nonlinear impairments in coherent optical communication systems with data rates of 100 Gb/s and beyond. First, two effective low-complexity algorithms for carrier recovery in single carrier coherent systems are presented. Specifically, we describe a frequency offset (FO) tracking algorithm that can dynamically compensate the FO in intradyne coherent systems to avoid potential performance degradation caused by stochastic frequency drift of lasers. In addition, we demonstrate a format-transparent carrier phase recovery (CPR) algorithm based on interleaved superscalar parallelization, which can be economically implemented in practice because it can minimize the required pilot symbol overhead and buffer size in the superscalar parallelization structure. Second, we explore the digital subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) technique and discuss its benefits. Specifically, we employ SCM signals in a long-haul transmission scenario to demonstrate the improved tolerance to both fiber nonlinearity and laser linewidth when the number of subcarriers is optimized. Furthermore, we explore the enhanced flexibility of the DSP design in SCM systems and propose a novel joint CPR algorithm for the correction of cycle slips (CS). Finally, we conduct studies on a low-cost solution for medium reach transmission, namely the Stokes-vector direct detection (SV-DD) systems. We demonstrate that the laser linewidth tolerance of SV-DD systems is limited by equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) and verify that the EEPN induced performance degradation can be mitigated by a simple maximum likelihood (ML) phase recovery stage. All the aforementioned DSP techniques have been demonstrated by simulations and experiments based on our leading-edge coherent optical transmission testbed." --

The power-dependent nature of the Kerr nonlinearity restricts the maximum launch power into the fiber. That results in the reduction of the optical signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver; thereby, the maximum transmission reach is limited. Over the last few decades, several digital signal processing (DSP) techniques have been proposed to mitigate the effects of fiber nonlinearity, for example, digital back-propagation (DBP), perturbation based nonlinearity compensation (PB-NLC), and phase-conjugated twin wave (PCTW). However, low-complexity and spectrally efficient DSP-based fiber nonlinearity mitigation schemes for long-haul transmission systems are yet to be developed. In this thesis, we focus on the computationally efficient DSP-based techniques that can help to combat various sources of fiber nonlinearity in long-haul coherent optical communication systems. With this aim, we propose a linear time/polarization coded digital phase conjugation (DPC) technique for the mitigation of fiber nonlinearity that doubles the spectral efficiency obtained in the PCTW technique. In addition, we propose to investigate the impact of random polarization effects, like polarization-dependent loss and polarization mode dispersion, on the performance of the linear-coded DPC techniques. We also propose a joint technique that combines single-channel DBP with the PCTW technique. We show that the proposed scheme is computationally efficient and achieves similar performance as multi-channel DBP in wavelength division multiplexed superchannel systems. The regular perturbation (RP) series used to analytically approximate the solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) has a serious energy divergence problem when truncated to the first-order. Recent results on the transmission of high data-rate optical signals reveal that the nonlinearity compensation performance of the first-order PB-NLC technique decreases as the product of the transmission distance and launch power increases. The enhanced RP (ERP) method can improve the accuracy of the first-order RP approximation by partially solving the energy divergence problem. On this ground, we propose an ERP-based nonlinearity compensation technique to compensate for the fiber nonlinearity in a polarization-division multiplexed dispersion unmanaged optical communication system. Another possible solution to improve the accuracy of the PB-NLC technique is to increase the order of the RP solution. Based on this idea, we propose to extend the first-order solution of the NLSE to the second-order to improve the nonlinearity compensation performance of the PB-NLC technique. Following that, we investigate a few simplifying assumptions to reduce the implementation complexity of the proposed second-order PB-NLC technique.

There is a clear trade-off between spectral efficiency and transmission distance, since the more spectrally-efficient modulation formats are also more susceptible to optical fiber nonlinearities. This chapter illustrates the application of nonlinear backpropagation to mitigate for both linear and nonlinear transmission impairments for a range of modulation formats, at varying symbol-rates and wavelength spacings, and also by varying the signal bandwidth which is backpropagated. The basics of coherent receiver structure and DSP algorithms for chromatic dispersion compensation, equalization and phase recovery of PDM-BPSK, PS-QPSK, PDM-QPSK, PDM-8PSK, PDM-8QAM, and PDM-16QAM are reviewed and the effectiveness of the nonlinearity compensating DSP based on digital backpropagation is explored. This chapter includes a comprehensive literature review of the key experimental demonstrations of nonlinearity-compensating DSP.
