These commercially available cameras are able to capture the 4D light field in a single image. This allows for a variety of image processing capabilities that traditional cameras do not offer. For example, the image can be digitally refocused after it is captured and its depth can be estimated. In terms of application, these capabilities could be beneficial on airborne platforms. However, a limitation of currently available light field cameras is that they are not fully functional at medium or long ranges. If these cameras were to capture light fields at longer ranges, they would have a practical application when mounted on low-flying aircrafts. This dissertation takes current light field photography techniques and modifies them so they work better to capture medium-range images. The majority of cameras that capture the 4D light field use a microlens array to modulate the incoming light before it hits the image sensor. Previous work using printed modulation masks garnered the same effect obtained by microlens arrays. This dissertation details the development of a modulation mask that has medium-range applications. A new way of extracting the 4D light field from raw images that uses a digital Fourier transform is presented. This method works for images captured with microlens arrays and printed mask cameras. Two prototype cameras were built and tested to demonstrate some of these concepts. The concepts demonstrated by these cameras could be used in the future designs of light field cameras.

Computational photography is a combination of imaging techniques at the intersection of various fields such as optics, computer vision, and computer graphics. These methods enhance the capabilities of traditional digital photography by applying computational techniques both during and after the capturing process. This thesis targets two major subjects in this field: High Dynamic Range (HDR) image reconstruction and Light Field (LF) compressive capturing, compression, and real-time rendering. The first part of the thesis focuses on the HDR images that concurrently contain detailed information from the very dark shadows to the brightest areas in the scenes. One of the main contributions presented in this thesis is the development of a unified reconstruction algorithm for spatially variant exposures in a single image. This method is based on a camera noise model, and it simultaneously resamples, reconstructs, denoises, and demosaics the image while extending its dynamic range. Furthermore, the HDR reconstruction algorithm is extended to adapt to the local features of the image, as well as the noise statistics, to preserve the high-frequency edges during reconstruction. In the second part of this thesis, the research focus shifts to the acquisition, encoding, reconstruction, and rendering of light field images and videos in a real-time setting. Unlike traditional integral photography, a light field captures the information of the dynamic environment from all angles, all points in space, and all spectral wavelength and time. This thesis employs sparse representation to provide an end-to-end solution to the problem of encoding, real-time reconstruction, and rendering of high dimensional light field video data sets. These solutions are applied on various types of data sets, such as light fields captured with multi-camera systems or hand-held cameras equipped with micro-lens arrays, and spherical light fields. Finally, sparse representation of light fields was utilized for developing a single sensor light field video camera equipped with a color-coded mask. A new compressive sensing model is presented that is suitable for dynamic scenes with temporal coherency and is capable of reconstructing high-resolution light field videos.

This has obvious use in tasks such as autonomous navigation, robotic object retrieval, and surface profiling. Traditional methods for obtaining scene depth information may require active illumination, multiple cameras, or multiple exposures as hardware parameters are incremented. A plenoptic camera can be used to obtain scene depths and has the advantages of being passive and only requiring a single exposure with a single device. Traditional photographic cameras integrate all light arriving at a single detector element or film location, discarding information about the incidence angle of any individual contribution. In a plenoptic camera, an array of microlenses is placed in front of the image sensor, such that light arriving at a given microlens from different directions will arrive at different detector elements. With this, a signal can be attributed to all rays arriving at the microlens array, for which the assemblage is referred to as a "light field." Common light field operations include the creation multiple digital images from one exposure to simulate the effect of changing the camera's focal length ("digital refocus") and the determination of relative distances to scene objects. Existing light field methods are concerned with the light field within the camera (the "image-side light field"), as this is sufficient for most tasks. In contrast, this thesis describes a method for characterization of the light field external to a plenoptic camera (the "object-side light field") by performing experiments that determine the mapping from object-space rays to image-side light field coordinates. Use of an object-side light field allows for the determination of distances to scene objects in absolute terms, rather than the relative depths commonly obtained with image-side light fields. The object-side light field is obtained by observing the appearance of an occluding edge in the image-side light field as it is translated across the plane of the camera's front lens. Perspective images are created for simulated pinhole apertures at the front lens plane and used to view a patterned target, completing the characterization. In this thesis, descriptions of the characterized object-side light field are provided, offering an intuitive understanding of the structure of the light collected by the plenoptic camera. Demonstrations of common light field operations are provided to confirm that there is no loss of functionality through use of an object-side light field rather than an image-side light field. Simulations confirm that the distance to objects near to the camera can be determined to within 1~mm, with accuracy decreasing as the distance to an object increases.
