Book excerpt: The contemporary world is characterized by the massive use of digital communication platforms and services that allow people to stay in touch with each other and their organizations. On the other hand, it is also a world with great challenges in terms of crisis, disaster, and emergency situations of various kinds. Thus, it is crucial to understand the role of digital platforms/services in the context of crisis, disaster, and emergency situations. Digital Services in Crisis, Disaster, and Emergency Situations presents recent studies on crisis, disaster, and emergency situations in which digital technologies are considered as a key mediator. Featuring multi- and interdisciplinary research findings, this comprehensive reference work highlights the relevance of society’s digitization and its usefulness and contribution to the different phases and types of risk scenarios. Thus, the book investigates the design of digital services that are specifically developed for use in crisis situations and examines services such as online social networks that can be used for communication purposes in emergency events. Highlighting themes that include crisis management communication, risk monitoring, digital crisis intervention, and smartphone applications, this book is of particular use to governments, institutions, corporations, and professionals who deal with crisis, disaster, and emergency scenarios, as well as researchers, academicians, and students working in fields such as communications, multimedia, sociology, political science, and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of disaster, literary and other cultural representations of the event can play a role in the renegotiation of political power. In Disaster Writing, Mark D. Anderson analyzes four natural disasters in Latin America that acquired national significance and symbolism through literary mediation: the 1930 cyclone in the Dominican Republic, volcanic eruptions in Central America, the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, and recurring drought in northeastern Brazil. Taking a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to the disaster narratives, Anderson explores concepts such as the social construction of risk, landscape as political and cultural geography, vulnerability as the convergence of natural hazard and social marginalization, and the cultural mediation of trauma and loss. He shows how the political and historical contexts suggest a systematic link between natural disaster and cultural politics.

Book excerpt: A consistent problem that confronts disaster reduction is the disjunction between academic and expert knowledge and policies and practices of agencies mandated to deal with the concern. Although a great deal of knowledge has been acquired regarding many aspects of disasters, such as driving factors, risk construction, complexity of resettlement, and importance of peoples’ culture, very little has become protocol and procedure. Disaster Upon Disaster illuminates the numerous disjunctions between the suppositions, realities, agendas, and executions in the field, goes on to detail contingencies, predicaments, old and new plights, and finally advances solutions toward greatly improved outcomes.

Book excerpt: In the winter of 1982, a young man of thirteen was abducted from his bedroom, his captors being strange and apparently not of this world. Prior to this, he, along with his twin brother and grandmother, were observed by an otherworldly sphere, which hung over their heads as a soundless electronic eye.It has taken Ronald Kinsella many years to finally document these bizarre events, and in doing so he has drawn some very interesting parallels with these things we call 'Aliens,' along with their super-advanced ships. His testimony questions the validity of a paradox that, he reflects, can swiftly change faces to suit what's in vogue. From his humble beginnings, to the trauma of a solo snatching, Ronald searches for answers as to 'Why;' questioning the hogwash so many alleged abductees ramble, in that these strange visitors often proclaim a concern for 'World Peace,' when, he reiterates, there has not been one solitary scrap of evidence to support it.This spurred him to research the subject.Ronald contests the validity of these things people call 'Greys,' along with observing the disquieting rise of an agenda that will not benefit mankind (The Herd,) in as much as 'The Powers That Be' may well be working with something far more sinister than 'Aliens.'Was the Roswell Crash of 1947 a true saucer in the 'Spaceman' sense? Or was it something else? Was it, as Ronald speculates, a clever deception, engineered by minds much darker than we can conceive, and of which was expected to crash in a spectacular and dramatic fashion; aimed at effectively ensnaring the human race in a ploy for ultimate technological subjugation? A thing which has pulled wool over our eyes for long enough, and of which may well have calculated its rise to physicality, once the populace has been fooled and conditioned by its ambiguous intervention.

The study employed a survey research design to seek the perception of principals, vice principals, and teachers in secondary schools in south-south Nigeria. A questionnaire checklist was developed as an instrument for data collection. 125 participants participated in the study (that is, 48 principals and vice principals; 77 teachers from public and private schools in south-south Nigeria). The instrument was reviewed by experts for content validity. Based on the experts' understanding of digital technology and environmental education, their views and opinions were sufficiently qualified to provide insight into the reliability of the instrument. The data were analyzed using percentage frequency, mean scores, and t-test statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is No Such Thing as a Natural Disaster is the first comprehensive critical book on the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. The disaster will go down on record as one of the worst in American history, not least because of the government’s inept and cavalier response. But it is also a huge story for other reasons; the impact of the hurricane was uneven, and race and class were deeply implicated in the unevenness. Hartman and. Squires assemble two dozen critical scholars and activists who present a multifaceted portrait of the social implications of the disaster. The book covers the response to the disaster and the roles that race and class played, its impact on housing and redevelopment, the historical context of urban disasters in America and the future of economic development in the region. It offers strategic guidance for key actors - government agencies, financial institutions, neighbourhood organizations - in efforts to rebuild shattered communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calamitous impacts of climate change that are beginning to be felt around the world today expose the inextricability of human and natural histories. Arguing for a more complex account of such calamities, Kate Rigby examines a variety of past disasters, from the Black Death of the Middle Ages to the mega-hurricanes of the twenty-first century, revealing the dynamic interaction of diverse human and nonhuman factors in their causation, unfolding, and aftermath. Focusing on the link between the ways disasters are framed by the stories told about them and how people tend to respond to them in practice, Rigby also shows how works of narrative fiction invite ethical reflection on human relations with one another, with our often unruly earthly environs, and with other species in the face of eco-catastrophe. In its investigation of an array of authors from the Romantic period to the present—including Heinrich von Kleist, Mary Shelley, Theodor Storm, Colin Thiele, and Alexis Wright— Dancing with Disaster demonstrates the importance of the environmental humanities in the development of more creative, compassionate, ecologically oriented, and socially just responses to the perils and possibilities of the Anthropocene.
