This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of the Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics (DUKES) is part of a series and updates the figures given in the DUKES 2009. The publication consists of seven chapters; the first chapter deals with overall energy, with the other chapters covering specific fuels, combined heat and power and renewable sources of energy. The statistics presented in this digest will generate widespread interest from anyone working within or with an interest in energy sources, consumption and climate change. Chapters covering specific fuels and renewable sources of energy contain details on the production and consumption of individual fuels, presented using commodity balances. A commodity balance illustrates the flow of a fuel through from production to final consumption. These individual commodity balances are also combined in an energy balance, showing the interaction between different fuels. General energy statistics are presented in a table, revealing energy consumption by final users and an analysis of energy consumption by main industrial groups. Surveys conducted by AEA Energy & Environment on behalf of DECC estimate the contribution made by combined heat and power and renewable energy to energy production and consumption in the UK.

Book Synopsis Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability by : Paul Ekins
Download or read book Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability written by Paul Ekins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key area of public policy in the last twenty years is the question of how, and how much, to protect vthe environment. At the heart of this has been the heated debate over the nature of the relationship between economic growth and environmental sustainability. Is environemental sustainability economic growth or `green growth', a contradiction in terms? Avoiding the confusion that often surrounds these issues, Ekins provides rigorous expositions of the concept of sustainability, integrated environmental and economic accounting, the Environmental Kuznets Curve, the economics of climate change and environmental taxation. Individual chapters are organised as self-contained, state-of-the-art expositions of the core issues of environmental economics, with extensive cross-referencing from one chapter to another, in order to guide the student or policy-maker through these complex problems. Paul Ekins breaks new ground in defining the conditions of compatibility between economic growth and environmental sustainability, and provides measures and criteria by which the environmental sustainability of economic growth, as it occurs in the real world, may be judged. It is argued that `green growth' is not only theoretically possible but economically achievable and the authors show what environmental and economic policies are required to achieve this. Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability will be welcolmed by students of and researchers in environmental economics and environmental studies, as well as all interested policy-makers.
Book Synopsis Hungary by : Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides
Download or read book Hungary written by Ioannis Nicolaos Kessides and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungary was one of the first countries in Central and Eastern Europe to embark on economic transition. It has also led the region in terms of the restructuring and privatization of the infrastructure sectorselectricity, gas, and telecommunications. In fact, when negotiations over accession into the EU commenced, Hungary's institutional and structural framework was comparable to, if not ahead of, that of most EU countries. However, even an excellent process of reform provides some opportunities for further improvements, especially as new information and experience accumulate. This report: Provides a diagnostic assessment of recent and ongoing structural and regulatory reforms in Hungary's infrastructure sectors-electricity, oil and gas, and telecommunications; Identifies priorities for additional competitive restructuring and regulatory decontrol measures, their expected impacts, and policies designed to minimize the transition costs of deregulation and market liberalization; Assesses the progress made toward compliance with the European Union (EU) accession requirements and identify areas that might benefit from special attention to accelerate the transition to a liberalized regime; Identifies the major regulatory issues that need to be addressed in the medium term by the Hungarian regulatory agencies and suggest a strategy for addressing these issues. This volume will be of interest to Bank staff, policymakers, and World Bank client countries.

Download or read book Salmon at the Edge written by Derek Mills and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salmon at the Edge covers, in depth, the problems faced by wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout in estuaries and coastal zones, and in their early weeks at sea. The book also reflects the current precarious state of many migratory salmonid populations and the need for new approaches to a number of threats to these populations. Generated from papers given at the landmark Sixth Atlantic Salmon Symposium, held in Edinburgh, UK, Salmon at the Edge contains a huge wealth of information on such important topics as the impact of salmon farming, the behaviour of post-smolts in their early migration and their vulnerability to by-catch, and the use of nutrient enrichment and habitat enhancement to increase production of juvenile salmonids. With chapters written by internationally-known and respected authors, and including a message of support from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, this important volume is essential reading for all those involved with salmonid fishes, including fish biologists, fisheries scientists and managers, environmental, marine and freshwater scientists, and personnel involved in salmon aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies on their shelves. The Sixth Atlantic Salmon Symposium, from which chapters in this book have been generated, was organised by The Atlantic Salmon Trust and The Atlantic Salmon Federation, and was published with the financial support of The Fishmongers’ Company and Scottish and Southern Energy. Derek Mills of The Atlantic Salmon Trust, Pitlochry, Perthshire, UK has many years of research, writing and editing experience in salmon biology and fisheries
