Book excerpt: Basic Immunology focuses on substances that take part in serological reactions, including antigens, antibodies, and the physicochemical nature of immunological reactions. The selection first elaborates on the basic notions of immunity, antigens, immunoglobulins, and the production of antibody. Discussions focus on factors which increase the immune response, production of antibody, biological properties of immunoglobulins, evolution and control of immunoglobulin structure, antigenicity, specific immunity, and resistance. The text then takes a look at the complement system, antigen-antibody reactions, and immediate hypersensitivity. The book ponders on cell-mediated immunity and delayed hypersensitivity, transplantation immunology, and tumor immunology. Topics include production of immunity to neoplasms, immunological aspects of carcinogenesis and growth of established tumors, immunotherapy for experimental neoplasms, donor selection in human-organ transplantation, elicitation of delayed hypersensitivity, and the role of humoral factors in the transfer of delayed hypersensitivity. The selection is a valuable reference for medicine students and researchers interested in basic immunology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses for naturally occurring biological substances or administered materials have been with us for many years. These were usually based on the physical or chemical characteristics of the substances to be measured. However in recent years there has been an explosion of interest in analytical methods which made use of the high specificity and sensitivity of im munological reactions. These methods can be very simple in terms of technical procedures and can usually be performed on minute samples of biological fluids - factors which have ensured their ready acceptance in most laboratories. Recently there have been numerous meetings on technical aspects of particular immunoassays and on their application in specific diseases. We felt however that the time was ripe for an 'overview' of the whole field. To this end a conference on 'Immunoassays for the 80s' was held at the Zoological Society of London in 1980, and this book is largely based on that meeting. Both the immunoassay techniques and their numerous applications were discussed and are dealt with at length in this volume. The editors wish to thank all the contributors for their chapters and to acknowledge the debt they owe to Jean Ryan (NLCM) without whose organization and assistance this volume would not have been completed. Book excerpt: This text is a summary of basic principles and techniques and is dedicated to all those students who have been told by their mentors, "Go forth and do two-dimensional gels and have the results on my desk tomorrow. " No attempt has been made in this text to provide exhaustive lists of references related to basic principles or techniques or to list every com pany or supplier involved in this area of research. Nevertheless, it is hoped that sufficient information is given to help a new investigator or student appreciate the complexities but develop sufficient expertise to carry out these techniques successfully. The discussions are designed to instill in basic science and clinical investigators of all levels of expertise an appreciation of the power of combining a variety of techniques as well as to provide basic insight into the theories, complexities, and problems frequently encountered with electrophoretic and immunochemical meth ods. Bonnie S. Dunbar Houston v Acknowledgments I wish to thank my students and staff for their patience and support throughout the preparation of this text. I would like to acknowledge my appreciation for my extensive discussions with Dr. David Sammons (Uni versity of Arizona) and to Dr. N. L. and Dr. N. G. Anderson and their colleagues (Argonne National Laboratory) for their invaluable advice and suggestions in this area over the years. I thank my research assistant, Ms.

Book excerpt: Advances in Cellular Neurobiology, Volume 2 discusses the central nervous system, focusing on the structure and function of the brain and spinal cord at cellular level and higher brain functions such as learning, memory, and intelligence. This book is divided into three main sections— cell differentiation and interaction, aging and pathology, and methodologies. The topics discussed include APUD cells and paraneurons: embryonic origin; trophic and specifying factors directed to neuronal cells; and cellular aspects of human brain tumors (gliomas). The astrocyte in liver disease; radioenzymatic methods for analysis of neurotransmitters; and application of immunofluorescence in studies of cytoskeletal antigens are also deliberated in this text. This publication is intended for neurologists, but is also beneficial to students researching on the topographical anatomy and functional relation of the brain and spinal cord.
