In recent years, the most popular theory of choice behavior has been rational choice theory. Developed and elaborated by economists over the past hundred years, it claims that individuals make choices in such a way as to maximize their well-being or utility under whatever constraints they face; that is, people make the best of their situations. Rational choice theory holds undisputed sway in economics, and has become an important explanatory framework in political science, sociology, and psychology. Nevertheless, its empirical support is thin. The matching law is perhaps the most important competing explanatory account of choice behavior. It views choice not as a single event or an internal process of the organism but as a rate of observable events over time. It states that instead of maximizing utility, the organism allocates its behavior over various activities in exact proportion to the value derived from each activity. It differs subtly but significantly from rational choice theory in its predictions of how people exert self-control, for example, how they decide whether to forgo immediate pleasures for larger but delayed rewards. It provides, through the primrose path hypothesis, a powerful explanation of alcohol and narcotic addiction. It can also be used to explain biological phenomena, such as genetic selection and foraging behavior, as well as economic decision making.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to further expand the evidence-based literature on the effectiveness of Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO) as an isolated intervention when reducing challenging behaviors. This research study addressed the issues of reinforcement, determining interval length, and momentary versus whole DRO application to further explain these variables as indicated in previous research. Specifically, this study conducted a reinforcement pre-assessment and calculated interval length (interresponse time) on a weekly basis. It examined the effectiveness of implementing whole interval DRO (wDRO) during treatment and momentary interval DRO (mDRO) during maintenance at the classwide level to reduce talking out in typically developing kindergarten children using a multiple baseline across settings design. Measures of treatment acceptability, treatment integrity, and other social validity measures were also utilized. Results indicated that the intervention effectively reduced talking out in both settings, with average response rates during floor reduced from 4.3 responses per minute (rpm) to 3.2 rpm, and 3.9 rpm to 2.2 rpm during math. Although treatment acceptability scores were below the acceptable range, treatment integrity data revealed high adherence to the DRO protocol. Social validity, partly measured by the behavior rating scales, indicated no statistical difference in the teacher's or parents' reports of behavior intensity. Parents reported a statistical difference in the extent they saw the behavior as problematic at home. Despite some observed limitations, several implications appear warranted. First, the relative success of momentary interval DRO over whole interval DRO appears to contradict past research. Second, it is important for practitioners to note the crucial issue of teacher acceptability and feasibility. Finally, the value of varying powerful reinforcement and delivering that reinforcement immediately after the behavior continues to demand attention. Implications for research and practice are included.

In addition, the current trends of Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) and Response to Intervention (RtI) advocate for preventative and proactive strategies (Coleman, Buysse, & Neitzel, 2006). The integration of these trends with the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis offer procedural options to improve socially significant behavior among children (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 1987). Ethical conversations support the need for reinforcement based procedures particularly within applied settings (Lerman, Vorndran, Addison, & Contrucci Kuhn, 2004). The purpose of this study was to extend the evidence-based literature on reinforcement based protocols when diminishing behaviors. The DRO with an embedded token economy treatment package explored the efficacy of scripted instruction and praise among two school aged participants with autism. A whole interval DRO procedure was utilized with interresponse times determined on a weekly basis to enhance feasibility for applied practitioners. If a target behavior occurred during the interresponse time, an interval reset application was applied and scripted instruction was verbally administered. Results found that upon application of the treatment package, target behaviors significantly reduced while the embedded token economy, on a three to one ratio, was found to maintain near zero rates of target behaviors between both participants. The utilization of intermittent praise was thought to support near zero behavior rates as participants worked towards accumulating three tokens. Treatment integrity was monitored throughout the intervention with data supporting the ease in application for applied practitioners. The DRO with an embedded token economy treatment package was found to be efficacious for reducing target behaviors and maintaining near zero rates among children with autism in a special education classroom; holding potential as a simplistic, reinforcement based treatment option.

Although the decelerative effects of the DRO have been well researched, little is known about the processes that produce this behavior reduction. DRO schedules may decrease behavior through extinction, negative punishment, adventitious reinforcement, or some combination of these. Recent research has found some evidence to support the adventitious reinforcement hypothesis in a human operant arrangement (Jessel, Borrero, & Becraft; 2015). This three-part study replicated and extended previous research by evaluating the effects of DRO schedules on other behavior in a human operant arrangement. Participants played a computer game with two response options (target and other) and received points according to various schedules of reinforcement. We compared rate of responding across repeated exposures and varying durations of DRO, yoked variable time schedule (VT), and extinction (EXT) probes. Results across the three experiments showed that DRO schedules resulted in the lowest rate of the target response and the highest rate of the other response. Results from extended exposure to DRO probes showed that DRO schedules sometimes resulted in adventitious reinforcement of the other response, though often times, it was a fleeting effect and other response rates did not maintain. Results also showed that response reductions produced by DRO schedules could not be entirely explained by adventitious reinforcement of other behavior. The mechanisms responsible for response reductions during DRO schedules may largely depend on the discriminability of the DRO contingency.
