Book excerpt: The main objective of this research is to correlate the deformation and internal force of the approach slab with the approach embankment settlements and the approach slab parameters such as length and thickness. Finite element analysis was carried out in the present study. This correlation will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of approach slabs and develop guidelines for their structural design. This information will also help determine when settlement controls are necessary. While flat approach slabs may be used for some short span applications, longer span lengths would require very thick slabs. In such cases, ribbed approach slabs (similar to slab-on-beam bridge decks) are proposed in the present study because they provide advantages over the flat slabs. Based on finite element analysis, internal forces and deformations of ribbed slabs were predicted and their designs were conducted. In addition, special studies on a few issues that were not included in the original scope of work were conducted. These special studies including investigating (1) the skew angle effects and the applicability of the developed methodology for right approach slabs to skewed approach slabs; (2) the failure mode/mechanism of the approach slab end and the abutment connection; (3) the applicability of the developed methodology to AASHTO LRFD highway loads; and (4) rating of the developed approach slabs in terms of special trucks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential settlement at the roadway/bridge interface typically results in an abrupt grade change, causing driver discomfort, impairing driver safety, and exerting potentially excessive impact traffic loading on the abutment. Bridge approach slabs are used to keep the effects of this differential settlement within tolerable limits. In many cases, however, the final magnitude of settlement exceeds the working range of an approach slab, necessitating costly roadway and slab repairs. Many state DOTs regard the settlement of bridge approach slabs as a substantial maintenance problem. Guidelines affecting the use, design methodology, material specifications, and construction techniques vary greatly from state to state. The purpose of this study was to provide a literature review on the subject and to conduct a survey on the state of the practice. Thirty-nine state DOTs responded to the survey. Summary findings were compiled, and a comparison with current VDOT practices was made. Recommendations for a new set of guidelines, aimed at mitigating bridge approach settlement, were formulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides giving an historical introduction to embankment dams the book describes the need for instrumentation, planning procurement and installation practices of instruments. The significance of visual inspection and techniques, of monitoring various parameters, seepage, pore pressure, surface and internal displacements, earth pressures and seismic behaviour, through instrumentation has been described. Collection and processing of data and their use for back analysis to check stability of a dam at various stages of construction and reservoir filling have been suggested. In addition to case histories quoted in various chapters, an exclusive chapter on select case histories has been added which describes the conventional and latest instruments that are being used and methods adopted for installation, monitoring and analyses of data.

Book excerpt: Case studies are used to show how theory is applied in practice. In the design and construction process, various models are used – geotechnical, laboratory, analytical, delivery, and economic models as the project is developed from planning to construction. This book explores the use and limitations of these earthwork models to be understood and appropriately applied. This book evolved from an earthworks course to practicing engineers over a 10-year period. Theory alone is not enough. Experience alone without relating back to theory can sometimes be misleading if transferred without understanding the fundamentals. The book benefited from the experiences of those many practicing engineers and the author’s experience in multi-disciplinary consulting companies as well as specialist geotechnical companies and government departments. The basics of soil, rock and compaction mechanics as applied to field conditions are covered. Material typically not covered in other textbooks, include the applications and limitations of associated "standard" laboratory and field testing. Specific chapters are dedicated to excavation, subgrade and expansive clay assessment and treatment. Useful design practices as well as the development and application of specifications is covered. A specification, test or design in one climatic condition or geology may not apply in another.

Book excerpt: This book collects 5 keynote and 15 topic lectures presented at the 2nd European Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (2ECEES), held in Istanbul, Turkey, from August 24 to 29, 2014. The conference was organized by the Turkish Earthquake Foundation - Earthquake Engineering Committee and Prime Ministry, Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency under the auspices of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE) and European Seismological Commission (ESC). The book’s twenty state-of-the-art papers were written by the most prominent researchers in Europe and address a comprehensive collection of topics on earthquake engineering, as well as interdisciplinary subjects such as engineering seismology and seismic risk assessment and management. Further topics include engineering seismology, geotechnical earthquake engineering, seismic performance of buildings, earthquake-resistant engineering structures, new techniques and technologies and managing risk in seismic regions. The book also presents the Third Ambraseys Distinguished Award Lecture given by Prof. Robin Spence in honor of Prof. Nicholas N. Ambraseys. The aim of this work is to present the state-of-the art and latest practices in the fields of earthquake engineering and seismology, with Europe’s most respected researchers addressing recent and ongoing developments while also proposing innovative avenues for future research and development. Given its cutting-edge content and broad spectrum of topics, the book offers a unique reference guide for researchers in these fields. Audience: This book is of interest to civil engineers in the fields of geotechnical and structural earthquake engineering; scientists and researchers in the fields of seismology, geology and geophysics. Not only scientists, engineers and students, but also those interested in earthquake hazard assessment and mitigation will find in this book the most recent advances.
