Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential Growth in Plants contains the papers presented at Symposia 2.04 ""Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Development"" and 2.14 ""Movements Based on Differential Flank Growth"" at the XIV Botanical Congress held in Berlin during July 1987. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins by explaining the differential growth in plants. Some chapters follow on the biophysics of differential growth; the phototropic behavior of hypocotyls and coleoptiles in connection with the distribution of indole-3-acetic acid and of growth-inhibiting substances within them; and the differential growth and hormone redistribution in gravireacting maize roots. Other topics explained include plant movements caused by differential growth; genetic analysis of tropic responses; growth and bending of a cylindrical structure in terms of the distribution of relative growth rates; and differential growth resulting in the specification of different types of cellular architecture in root meristems. This book also elucidates the curving and twinning of stems, as well as the spatio-temporal analysis of flower ontogenesis.

Book excerpt: This text explores the means, processes and mechanisms by which plants change the orientation and juxtapositions of various organs in order to optimize their harvest of energy, and examines the major stumuli which provokes such responses. These interactions are re-described for higher plants through to ferns, fungi and algae, and the text constantly emphasizes the functional significance of particular growth movements to plants in their natural surroundings.

Book excerpt: Plant cell walls are complex, dynamic cellular structures essential for plant growth, development, physiology and adaptation. Plant Cell Walls provides an in depth and diverse view of the microanatomy, biosynthesis and molecular physiology of these cellular structures, both in the life of the plant and in their use for bioproducts and biofuels. Plant Cell Walls is a textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, as well as a professional-level reference book. Over 400 drawings, micrographs, and photographs provide visual insight into the latest research, as well as the uses of plant cell walls in everyday life, and their applications in biotechnology. Illustrated panels concisely review research methods and tools; a list of key terms is given at the end of each chapter; and extensive references organized by concept headings provide readers with guidance for entry into plant cell wall literature. Cell wall material is of considerable importance to the biofuel, food, timber, and pulp and paper industries as well as being a major focus of research in plant growth and sustainability that are of central interest in present day agriculture and biotechnology. The production and use of plants for biofuel and bioproducts in a time of need for responsible global carbon use requires a deep understanding of the fundamental biology of plants and their cell walls. Such an understanding will lead to improved plant processes and materials, and help provide a sustainable resource for meeting the future bioenergy and bioproduct needs of humankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water stress in plants is caused by the water deficit, as induced possibly by drought or high soil salinity. The prime consequence of water stress in plants is the disruption in the agricultural production, resulting in food shortage. The plants, however, try to adapt to the stress conditions using biochemical and physiological interventions. The edited compilation is an attempt to provide new insights into the mechanism and adaptation aspects of water stress in plants through a thoughtful mixture of viewpoints. We hope that the content of the book will be useful for the researchers working with the plant diversity-related environmental aspects and also provide suggestions for the strategists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In plants, growth is essential to the shape regulation of developing organs. It is also the key for every plant to adapt to its environment. At the cell level, growth relies on a competition between the inner pressure of the cell and the rigidity of its cell wall. Heterogeneities of these quantities across the tissue can result in differential growth and lead to motions of the whole organ. These macroscopic motions can thus be read as an outward signal of the cellular mechanisms underlying shape regulation and growth itself. Here, we propose to take benefit from this link between growth and motions to gain a new insight on growth through a multiscale approach, from the organ to the cell wall. We focus on the compound leaves of Averrhoa carambola which display two marked motions, unfurling and nutation, widespread among developing leaves. First, we show that the shape of the leaf results from an active regulation of its macroscopic mechanical properties. The kinematics of the two latter motions are then compared to the associated growth. Doing so, we put forward the specific patterns of growth and differential growth underlying the development of the leaf. Based on these results, we build a kinematic model for nutation which, accordingly with previous findings, suggests the occurrence of local contractions during growth. At the cell wall level, our results reveal spatial heterogeneities of both its rigidity and biochemical status within the leaf. These heterogeneities might be consistent with the direction of the nutation.

It encompasses the biology and mechanisms of metamorphosis, asexual reproduction, stem cell growth and differentiation, and regeneration. Tissue patterning, tissue growth, and tissue morphogenesis are the chief processes related to the embryonic development of animals. Although plant development shares many similarities with animal development, plant morphogenesis is achieved via differential growth due to immotility of plant cells. Research in developmental biology emphasizes the use of model organisms. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to developmental biology. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. This book is a resource guide for experts as well as students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants are incredibly sensitive to changes in temperature. Changes of a single degree or two in ambient temperature can impact plant architecture, developmental processes, immune response, and plant reproduction. Temperature and Plant Development thoroughly explores plant molecular responses to changes in temperature with aim to understanding how plants perceive, integrate, and respond to temperature signals. Temperature and Plant Development explores the diverse molecular responses that plants exhibit as they face changing temperatures. Temperature-related changes and adaptations to essential developmental processes, such as germination, flowering, and reproduction, are explored in detail. Chapters also explore the impact of temperature on plant immune responses and the impact of rising temperatures on global food security. A timely and important book, Temperature and Plant Development will be a valuable resource for plant biologists, crop scientists, and advanced students. • Up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the role of temperature on plant development. • Looks at changes and adaptations to plant developmental processes made in response to changing temperatures. • Explores the role of temperature on plant immune response and pathogen defense • Provides a timely look at the impact of changing temperatures on global food security
