This book was released on 1932-12-31 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book can be viewed as a first attempt to systematically develop an algebraic theory of nonlinear differential equations, both ordinary and partial. The main goal of the author was to construct a theory of elimination, which ``will reduce the existence problem for a finite or infinite system of algebraic differential equations to the application of the implicit function theorem taken with Cauchy's theorem in the ordinary case and Riquier's in the partial.'' In his 1934 review of the book, J. M. Thomas called it ``concise, readable, original, precise, and stimulating'', and his words still remain true. A more fundamental and complete account of further developments of the algebraic approach to differential equations is given in Ritt's treatise Differential Algebra, written almost 20 years after the present work (Colloquium Publications, Vol. 33, American Mathematical Society, 1950).

Ritt and his collaborators in the 1930's was to give the classical theory of nonlinear differential equations, similar to the theory created by Emmy Noether and her school for algebraic equations and algebraic varieties. The current book presents the results of 20 years of work on this problem. The book quickly became a classic, and thus far, it remains one of the most complete and valuable accounts of differential algebra and its applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential algebra explores properties of solutions of systems of (ordinary or partial, linear or non-linear) differential equations from an algebraic point of view. It includes as special cases algebraic systems as well as differential systems with algebraic constraints. This algebraic theory of Joseph F Ritt and Ellis R Kolchin is further enriched by its interactions with algebraic geometry, Diophantine geometry, differential geometry, model theory, control theory, automatic theorem proving, combinatorics, and difference equations. Differential algebra now plays an important role in computational methods such as symbolic integration and symmetry analysis of differential equations. These proceedings consist of tutorial and survey papers presented at the Second International Workshop on Differential Algebra and Related Topics at Rutgers University, Newark in April 2007. As a sequel to the proceedings of the First International Workshop, this volume covers more related subjects, and provides a modern and introductory treatment to many facets of differential algebra, including surveys of known results, open problems, and new, emerging, directions of research. It is therefore an excellent companion and reference text for graduate students and researchers.

Broadly, the meeting discussed the application of modern geometrical methods to problems in robotics. There are now a few textbooks in this area and more papers in the literature. The aim of this book is to introduce these ideas, their simplicity and power, to a wider audience. The first three chapters give an introduction to the Lie group and Lie algebras. The focus is on the group of rigid body transformations in space, namely the Lie group which is fundamental to robotics. The following chapters provide an overview of some of the most up-to-date work in the field of geometrical methods in robotics and have been written by some of the leading researchers in the field. The applications addressed cover the design of robot kinematics, the analysis of singularities in robots and mechanisms, and a geometric view of some computational issues.

Book excerpt: This important book presents all the major works of Professor Wen-Tsun Wu, a widely respected Chinese mathematician who has made great contributions in the fields of topology and computer mathematics throughout his research career. The book covers Wu's papers from 1948 to 2005 and provides a comprehensive overview of his major achievements in algebraic topology, computer mathematics, and history of ancient Chinese mathematics. In algebraic topology, he discovered Wu classes and Wu formulas for Stiefel-Whitney classes of sphere bundles or differential manifolds, established an imbedding theory with an application to the layout problem of integrated circuits, and introduced the I*-functors which turned the ?rational homotopy theory? created by D Sullivan into algorithmic form. In computer mathematics, he discovered Wu's method of mechanical theorem proving by means of computers, which has been applied to prove and even discover on the computers hundreds of non-trivial theorems in various kinds of elementary and differential geometries. He also discovered a new effective method of polynomial equations solving, which has been used to solve problems raised from the fields of robotics and mechanisms, CAGD, computer vision, theoretic physics, celestial mechanics, and chemical equilibrium computation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [From the foreword by B. Teissier] The main ideas of the proof of resolution of singularities of complex-analytic spaces presented here were developed by Heisuke Hironaka in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since then, a number of proofs, all inspired by Hironaka's general approach, have appeared, the validity of some of them extending beyond the complex analytic case. The proof has now been so streamlined that, although it was seen 50 years ago as one of the most difficult proofs produced by mathematics, it can now be the subject of an advanced university course. Yet, far from being of historical interest only, this long-awaited book will be very rewarding for any mathematician interested in singularity theory. Rather than a proof of a canonical or algorithmic resolution of singularities, what is presented is in fact a masterly study of the infinitely near “worst” singular points of a complex analytic space obtained by successive “permissible” blowing ups and of the way to tame them using certain subspaces of the ambient space. This taming proves by an induction on the dimension that there exist finite sequences of permissible blowing ups at the end of which the worst infinitely near points have disappeared, and this is essentially enough to obtain resolution of singularities. Hironaka’s ideas for resolution of singularities appear here in a purified and geometric form, in part because of the need to overcome the globalization problems appearing in complex analytic geometry. In addition, the book contains an elegant presentation of all the prerequisites of complex analytic geometry, including basic definitions and theorems needed to follow the development of ideas and proofs. Its epilogue presents the use of similar ideas in the resolution of singularities of complex analytic foliations. This text will be particularly useful and interesting for readers of the younger generation who wish to understand one of the most fundamental results in algebraic and analytic geometry and invent possible extensions and applications of the methods created to prove it.
