Book excerpt: Knowledge of mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of occlusive arterial dis eases is fundamental for the design of prevention and treatment. A series of studies based on in vitro investigations, the experimental animal and the human being have slowly increased our understanding of cardiovascular diseases and unveiled their secrets to us. Over the last 60 years it has been generally assumed that dietary fats and lipids and the occurrence of atherosclerosis are closely related. Yet, even if epidemiological studies clearly indicate the existence of an association between the amount of composition of dietary lipids and morbidity and mortality of cardio vascular disease, our basic knowledge on cause and effect is still hidden in a cloud of uncertainty. The present book discusses the relation between dietary lipids and arterial throm bosis, which latter process has been observed in the coronary arteries in up to 90% of subjects with acute myocardial infaction. In this volume Dr. Hornstra, who has occupied himself with thrombosis research with never-failing enthusiasm, great skill and critical approach for the last fifteen years, tries to establish possible links between lipid metabolism and thrombosis. His literature studies are comprehensive and his investigations are impressive in that they give a new dimension and a new methodology to research of lipids and thrombosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dietary fats and carbohydrates represent some eighty to ninety percent of food energy uptake in man; fatty acids play a critical role in human development, health and disease. In affluent populations high fat consumption contributes to heart disease, obesity and type II diabetes mellitus, while in non-affluent groups, the generally poor nutritional state found in young children can be partially attributed to a low fat intake. This book reviews our current understanding of essential fatty acids and their role in human nutrition. The topics addressed include the analysis of dietary fatty acids, dietary fats and fish oils in health and in the prevention of heart disease, linoleic acid in the treatment of diabetes, and the role of essential fatty acids in early human development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the major components of human diet, edible fats and oils are typically produced through various forms of technological manipulation of naturally available starting material. It is also generally recognized that dietary fat, namely the type and amount, playa significant role in modulating the health stat~s of large population groups in econ omically advanced countries, and that, more specifically, the onset and progression of a number of diseases of wide incidence and large socio-economical relevance, such as hyperlipidaemias, diabetes, hyper tension, are significantly affected by dietary fats. Associations operating in public health preventive programs and clinical associations in affluent countries have recommended changes of dietary habits and especially of fat consumption in the whole community. Among the parameters to be modified of special relevance are the re duction of total fat, of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol intake and to increase the amount of unsaturated fatty acids. It is, however, becoming more and more evident that each member of the complex fatty acid moiety of our diet may playa different role from a nutritional point of view. This is particularly true for the highly unsaturated compounds belonging to the two metabolic series n-6 and n-3, contained in high concentrations in vegetable oils and in lipids from marine animals respectively, as well as for oleic acid, contained in high concentrations in olive oil.

Book excerpt: Fats in foods and fat on the body have become national obsessions. With due cause. Research is showing the far-reaching deleterious effects of obesity as well as relationships between lipid (fat and oil) consumption and a wide range of health concerns. In this seminal book, Dr. Wysong brings a surprise and reveals that fats are not the nutritional demons popularly assumed. The key to health is not to avoid dietary fat and jump on the cholesterol checking and drug band wagon. Lipids are a part of every cell and are essential components of hormones and body regulators. Even cholesterol (in its natural state) is critical to health. If it is not eaten, the body produces it. Dr. Wysong provides the understanding necessary to avoid such popular and professional myths.Natural fats are not something to avoid, but rather to seek and cherish. The real villain is food processing. Heat, light, air, hydrogenation, and time are the enemies of healthful fats. Not only does processing destroy important fats and oils, but it can convert them to dangerous disease-producing toxins. Dr. Wysong explains how to choose foods that are protected from these dangers.Read carefully, Lipid Nutrition can be one of those rare books which replaces the reading of dozens of others. Whether you are a person just concerned with better health and nutrition, or a professional seeking keys to prevention and treatment, Lipid Nutrition will prove to be a wonderful aid to understanding and a valuable resource for making healthy decisions.

Book excerpt: Scientific progress with respect to the important role of various lipids in myocardial function and the dearrangements of lipid metabolism underlying ischaemic heart disease(s) has been con siderable in recent years. In 1986 alone, an overall number ofl 044 full papers covering the topics "Lipids-Heart-Heart Disease", have been published in a variety of biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and cardiology journals (source: Index Medicus). They have broadened our in sight into the molecular basis of myocardial lipidology and the lipido-chemical basis of car diology in health and disease, and have narrowed the gap between promising pharmacological intervention in experimental animals and clinical treatment of patients suffering from an ischaemic heart. Furthermore, they illustrate the fundamental significance of the product of the union between basic and clinical science. The rapid development of knowledge in the "Lipids-Heart-Heart Disease" triad prompted us to organize the International Symposium on Lipid Metabolism in the Normoxic and lschaemic Heart, held in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) on September 22 and 23, 1986. This meeting was a coproject of the Department of Biochemistry I (Medical Faculty, Erasmus University Rotter dam) and the Department of Physiology (Medical Faculty, University of Limburg) and was held under the auspices of the GerritJan Mulder Foundation (named after a famous Rotterdam physi cian and chemist who lived from 1802-1880) whom we thank for their co-operation. The present volume is a compendium of invited papers and contributions selected from the posters presented during the symposium.

Book excerpt: After 17 years, the Nutricia Symposium retumed to its horne grounds in The of the 10th Nutricia Netherlands, where the first five Symposia were held. The objective Symposium was to bring together a limited number of opinion leaders and key researchers in selected topics of infant nutrition to discuss the current state of the art based on original contributions and reviews. The discussion sessions after the papers were taped and edited and may give additional information and views. As a result of time constraints, the discussions on a few papers had to be cut short, or, unfortunately, could not take place at all. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend reading the discussion sections, such as the panel discussion on the requirements for LCPUFA for term and/or preterm infants. During the preparation of the Symposium the sad news that Professor J . H. P. Jonxis died prompted the organisers to dedicate one special lecture to the memory of the principal organiser of the first four Nutricia Symposia. This lecture entitled "What determines the production and composition ofbreast milk?" was given by Dr. Kathleen Moti!. Acknowledgement should be made to the co-organizers and co-chairmen Professor Sir David HuH, Professor Pieter Sauer and Dr. Terence Stephenson for their contri bution. Finally, without mentioning names, the editors wish to thank a number of persons within the Nutricia organization without whom the Symposium and its Pro ceedings would not have been possible.
