Book excerpt: As the demand for energy harvesting and storage devices grows, this book will be valuable for researchers to learn about the most current achievements in this sector. Sustainable development systems are centered on three pillars: economic development, environmental stewardship, and social. One of the ideas established to achieve balance between these pillars is to minimize the usage of nonrenewable energy sources. Harvesting energy from the surrounding environment and converting it into electrical power is one viable solution to this problem. In recent years, there has been a surge in the development of new energy generation technologies such as solar, wind, and thermal energy to replace fossil fuel energy supplies with cleaner renewable ones. Energy harvesting systems have emerged as a key study topic and are rapidly expanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of high-temperature dielectrics is key to develop advanced electronics and power systems that operate under extreme environmental conditions. In the past few years, many improvements have been made and many exciting developments have taken place. However, currently available candidate materials and methods still do not meet the applicable standards. Polyimide (PI) was found to be the preferred choice for high-temperature dielectric films development due to its thermal stability, dielectric properties, and flexibility. However, it has disadvantages such as a relatively low dielectric permittivity. This chapter presents an overview of recent progress on PI dielectric materials for high-temperature capacitive energy storage applications. In this way, a new molecular design of the skeleton structure of PI should be performed to balance size and thermal stability and to optimize energy storage property for high-temperature application. The improved performance can be generated via incorporation of inorganic units into polymers to form organic-inorganic hybrid and composite structures.

Book excerpt: Demand for compact instrumentation, portable field equipment, and new electromagnetic weapons is creating a need for new dielectric materials with higher energy storage capabilities. Recognizing the need for higher energy storage capacitors, the Army Research Lab at Fort Monmouth, NJ, initiated a program a year ago to investigate potential methods for increasing the dielectric strength of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) film, which is the highest energy density material commercially available today. Treatment of small area PVDF films in a CF4/O2 plasma showed that the dielectric strength of PVDF films can be increased by as much as 20 percent when treated in a 96 percent CF4/4 percent O2 plasma. This 44 percent increase in energy storage of a PVDF capacitor is significant considering that the treatment can be implemented in a conventional metallizing chamber, with minimum capital investment. The data shows that improved breakdown strength may be unique to PVDF film and the particular CF4/O2 gas mixture, because PVDF film treated with 100 percent CF4, 100 percent O2, Ar gas plasma, and electron irradiation shows no improvement in breakdown strength. Other data presented includes dissipation factor, dielectric constant, and surface tension measurements. Yializis, A. and Binder, M. and Mammone, R. J. ...

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid implementation and improvement of renewable energy technologies require advanced dielectric materials to enable capacitive energy storage under high fields. Since capacitors are among the most pervasive electronic device in many of these systems, my search for improved dielectrics focused on the application of film capacitors. To overcome these current problems, new polymers need to be developed that can serve as the dielectric material in electronic devices. Such a comprehensive search requires careful prior planning to ensure that effort is not needlessly wasted and thus a rational co-design approach was developed. Through this approach, high-throughput computational predictions are used to guide experimental synthesis so that the most likely candidates can be made and characterized first. Through a feedback loop, these real-world results are returned to the computationalists to improve their search to yield better informed suggestions. The result of this approach is the selection of several polymers as candidates for dielectric materials. Those polymer candidates were then studied in-depth to understand how various polarization mechanisms would influence their dielectric response. Computational methods such as molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and machine learning were used to gather deeper insight and help understand experimental results. Ultimately, by exploiting these polarization mechanisms, polymers with high dielectric constants, breakdown strengths, and energy densities could be produced.

Energy Storage offers a comprehensive look at the possible approaches to energy storage, which are relevant to various situations; from smoothing demand in electrical energy production, applications of energy storage, to transportation. The book covers a variety of approaches to the storage of energy. Beginning with a discussion of the critical importance of energy storage, the book discusses various possible storage options including hydro storage, compressed air energy storage, and electrical and chemical storage in batteries, capacitors and fuel cells. There is also a chapter on the mechanical storage of energy with flywheels using advanced materials. The various applications to power production and transportation are also included. The expertise and active involvement of the authors of the various chapters ensures that the information is reliable, current, and forward looking.
