Book excerpt: Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators are a technology which could replace conventional actuators due to their simple construction, lack of moving parts, and fast response. This type of actuator modifies the airflow due to electrohydrodynamic (EHD) force. The EHD phenomenon occurs due to the momentum transfer from charged species accelerated by an electric field to neutral molecules by collision. This chapter presents a study carried out to investigate experimentally and by numerical simulations a micro-scale plasma actuator. A microplasma requires a low discharge voltage to generate about 1 kV at atmospheric pressure. A multi-electrode microplasma actuator was used which allowed the electrodes to be energized at different potentials or waveforms, thus changing the direction of the flow. The modification of the flow at various time intervals was tracked by a high-speed camera. The numerical simulation was carried out using the Suzen-Huang model and the Navier-Stokes equations.

Book excerpt: Single-dielectric-barrier-discharge (SDBD) plasma actuators have shown much promise as an actuator for active flow control. Proper design and optimization of plasma actuators requires a model capable of accurately predicting the induced flow for a range of geometrical and excitation parameters. A number of models have been proposed in the literature, but have primarily been developed in isolation on independent geometries, frequencies and voltages. This study presents a comparison of four popular plasma actuator models over a range of actuation parameters for three different actuator geometries typical of actuators used in the literature. The results show that the hybrid model of Lemire & Vo (2011) is the only model capable of predicting the appropriate trends of the induced velocity for different geometries. Additionally, several modifications of this model have been integrated into a new proposed model for the plasma actuator, introducing a number of improvements.

Book excerpt: Boundary Labs, LLC is an early-stage company composed of three students at Case Western Reserve University which aimed to evaluate the feasibility of commercialization of a novel dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator as an active flow control (AFC) method in wind turbines. The hypothesized benefits of DBD plasma actuators for AFC include improved energy capture from wind, low cost, and ease of implementation. This thesis is a two-part case study. The first part emulates a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Proposal for the technology and includes discussions arguing that a strong commercial potential for the proposed technology exists in the United States and that technical development is feasible. The second part includes miscellaneous sections outside the scope of an SBIR proposal, leading to a discussion of the Boundary Labs team decision to discontinue development of this technology.

Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In current wing design, multiple flaps are incorporated into the trailing edge to allow mixing of high and low pressure sides to reduce flow separation. These flaps reduce the efficiency by adding weight and complexity to the aircraft. A single hinged flap would reduce these inefficiencies but is more susceptible to flow separation. Active flow control is a means by which the fluid flow over a body is deliberately altered and can be altered such that it becomes less likely to separate from the object. By energizing the flow, the degree of separation of the flow can be controlled, and this inherently controls lift. Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators are a form of active flow control. These actuators are created by asymmetrically aligning two electrodes and adding a dielectric layer between the electrodes. When the electrodes are electrically connected, ionized air (plasma) travels from the exposed electrode towards the covered electrode. Collisions occur between the plasma and neutral air over the body, and momentum is transferred to the neutral air, effectively energizing it. The purpose of this study is to examine the lift enhancement and flow control authority that multiple DBD plasma actuators have on a high-lift airfoil when compared to the flow exhibited by non-controlled and single DBD plasma actuator controlled cases. Electrodes were mounted onto a simplified NASA Energy Efficient Transport airfoil near the flap. The airfoil was tested in a closed, recirculating wind tunnel operating at a Reynolds number of 240,000, 20° flap deflection angle and 0° degree angle of incidence. The actuators were independently powered in order to determine the most effective input parameters. Using multiple actuators operated in-phase has increased the lift and has delayed flow separation on the trailing edge flap when compared to baseline and single actuation cases.

Book excerpt: The standard dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator, in which an asymmetric arrangement of electrodes leads to momentum coupling into the surrounding air, has already demonstrated its capability for flow control. The effect of some parameters such as dielectric thickness, dielectric temperature, voltage amplitude, driving frequency, different configurations and arrangements on actuator performance are examined. The new configuration of DBD which uses multiple encapsulated electrodes (MEE) has been shown to produce a superior and more desirable performance over the standard actuator design. As the number of encapsulated electrodes increases and other variables such as the driving frequency and voltage amplitude are considered, finding the optimum actuator configuration for increasing the induced velocity becomes a challenge. The surrogate modelling optimisation provides a cheap and yet efficient method for systematically investigating the effect of different parameters on the performance of the plasma actuator. The effect of the optimum actuator configuration on the aerodynamic performance of an aerofoil under leading edge separation and wake interaction conditions is examined. The plasma actuator is placed at the leadingedge of a symmetric NACA 0015 aerofoil which corresponds to the location of the leading edge slat. The aerofoil is operated at a chord Reynolds number of 0.2×10 6. Surface pressure measurements along with the mean velocity profile of the wake using pitot measurements are used to determine the lift and drag coefficients, respectively. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is also utilised to visualise and quantify the induced flow field. In comparison with reported literature on the standard DBD configuration, the MEE setup employed here is shown to provide a better means of flow control for the control of aerofoil separation. The characteristicsof a DBD plasma actuator when exposed to an unsteady flow generated by a shock tube is also investigated. This type of flow, which is often used in different studies, contains a range of flow regimes from sudden pressure and density changes to relatively uniform high-speed flow regions. A small circular shock tube is employed along with the schlieren photography technique to visualise the flow. The voltage and current traces of the plasma actuator are monitored throughout, and using the well established shock tube theory the change in the actuator characteristics are related to the physical processes which occur inside the shocktube. The results show that not only is the shear layer outside of the shock tube affected by the plasma but the passage of the shock front and high-speed flow behind it also greatly influences the properties of the plasma.

Book excerpt: To visualize the compressibility effects in the outer flow, shadowgraph imagery was used to capture features in the flow around the leading edge of the test article. Tests were conducted at static and oscillating angles of attack at both Mach 0.2 and 0.4, and Reynolds numbers of 1.2 million and 2.2 million respectively. Pitch oscillations were conducted at reduced frequencies of k = 0.05. Actuation frequencies varied from non-dimensional frequencies (F + ) of 0.78 to 6.09. Surface pressures acquired at Mach 0.2 without actuation applied agreed with historical data at static angles of attack, validating that the application of the actuator had limited intrusiveness to the flow. When subjected to pitch oscillations, plasma actuation reduced the severity of lift and moment stall by altering the development of the dynamic stall vortex at Mach 0.2. At Mach 0.4, marginal improvements were gained through actuation. Excitation resulted in a strong dynamic stall vortex that convected more slowly in comparison to the baseline case. Shadowgraph imagery revealed lambda shock waves forming over the first 15 percent of the airfoil chord in the same proximity of the actuator. The Shocks can lead to separation and diminished control authority.
