Book excerpt: Parkinson’s Disease;chronic illness;intimate autonomy;psychology;Jungian psychology From the initial port of a relating pattern with Parkinson’s Disease consisting of the usual fight, flight, freeze or the book’s new ‘fall’ structural methodology, the author takes off on a voyage harboring cryptic intimations about being “with” an illness, about a less ego accentuated interacting. This remarkable transmutation happens gradually. A re-molding takes place during the course of an eight year journey. The nucleus of this book is a descriptive narrative of this journey, of a voyage to the paradoxical space of an intimate autonomy. Even though THE HISS OF HOPE is about living with a chronic disease, the book does not dwell on a life of suffering and desperation, but rather, it also depicts the adventure leading to places, to encounters and to depths of experience that would not have been possible without first having been ambushed by Parkinson’s. Today’s Zeitgeist seems to be pregnant with dark and fearful hints of impending disasters. This book suggests an intimate autonomy as a culturally integrable relating pattern to cope with life in the first half of the 21st century. And with death. With a grateful nod to Parkinson’s Disease and its initial rupture of her life, the author concludes her book with a generous smile. The sparkle of the ‘before’ space links to the calm radiance of the ‘after’. And the sibilant hiss, reveals itself as a dynamic third between hope and no-hope: a concurrent unity of an intimate togetherness and an autonomous separateness. A beginning asserts itself at the end. Parkinson’s reacts with a wise and iconic grin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book may be described as an attempt to do two things; first, to explain religion through nature and man; and, secondly, to construe Christianity through religion. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all man's unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be." -- From the Preface

Book excerpt: Reconsiders the role played by mimesis - and by Goethe's Wilhelm Meister as a mimetic work - in the novels of Early German Romanticism. Mimesis, or the imitation of nature, is one of the most important concepts in eighteenth-century German literary aesthetics. As the century progressed, classical mimeticism came increasingly under attack, though it also held its position in the works of Goethe, Schiller, and Moritz. Much recent scholarship construes Early German Romanticism's refutation of mimeticism as its single distinguishing trait: the Romantics' conception of art as the very negationof the ideal of imitation. In this view, the Romantics saw art as production (poiesis): imaginative, musical, transcendent. Mattias Pirholt's book not only problematizes this view of Romanticism, but also shows that reflections on mimesis are foundational for the German Romantic novel, as is Goethe's great pre-Romantic novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship. Among the novels examined are Friedrich Schlegel's Lucinde, shown to be transgressive in its use of the aesthetics of imitation; Novalis's Heinrich von Ofterdingen, interpreted as an attempt to construct the novel as a self-imitating world; and Clemens Brentano's Godwi, seen to signal the endof Early Romanticism, both fulfilling and ironically deconstructing the self-reflective mimeticism of the novels that came before it. Mattias Pirholt is a Research Fellow in the Department of Literature at Uppsala University, Sweden.
