Book Synopsis The Politics of Exclusion by : Michal Krzyzanowski
Download or read book The Politics of Exclusion written by Michal Krzyzanowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many European countries the extreme right have refined their electoral programmes under the rubric of nationalist-populist slogans and have adopted subtle forms of racism. The move away from overt neo-fascist discourse has, allowed these parties to expand their electoral support as populist nationalist parties. Paradoxically, this has led to an increase in racist and anti-Semitic discourse. In this on-site analysis, Michal Krzyzanowski and Ruth Wodak describe a confluence of racism and xenophobia, and show how that union creates a new kind of racism. The "new" racism differs from the older kinds in that it is usually not expressed in overtly racial terms. Instead, the justifications that are typically employed concern protecting jobs, eliminating abuse of welfare benefits, or cultural incompatibilities. The new racism exploits xenophobia rooted in ethnocentrism, male chauvinism, and ordinary prejudices that are often unconscious or routinized. For these reasons, the new racism can be defined as "syncretic," a mixture of many, sometimes contradictory, racist and xenophobic beliefs and stereotypes. Racism as ideology and practice is alive and well. This important book aims to provide understanding of the many socio-political and historical processes involved in such expressions of institutional and individual racism--processes which are not necessarily evident from more overt or traditional expressions of racism. This is an innovative look at the political study of language as well as new instances of race, ethnicity, and class in present-day Europe.

In 1971, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for 'Ostpolitik', his policy of reconciliation with Germany's neighbours in the Eastern Bloc. During the treaty negotiations in Warsaw, he famously fell to his knees in recognition of the atrocities committed by his countrymen in the Warsaw Ghetto. This definitive new biography illuminates Brandt's personal life and political career, providing new perspectives on one of the leading statesmen of the twentieth century.
Book Synopsis The Media, European Integration and the Rise of Euro-journalism, 1950s–1970s by : Martin Herzer
Download or read book The Media, European Integration and the Rise of Euro-journalism, 1950s–1970s written by Martin Herzer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how the media helped to invent the European Union as the supranational polity that we know today. Against normative EU scholarship, it tells the story of the rise of the Euro-journalists – pro-European advocacy journalists – within the post-war Western European media. The Euro-journalists pioneered a journalism which symbolically magnified the technocratic European Community as the embodiment of Europe. Normative research on the media and European integration has focused on how the media might help to construct a democratic and legitimate European Union. In contrast, this book aims to deconstruct how journalists – as part of Western European elites – played a key role in elite European identity building campaigns.
Book Synopsis Ethnic Minorities and the Media by : Simon Cottle
Download or read book Ethnic Minorities and the Media written by Simon Cottle and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2000-12-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * What are the latest developments in the production, representation and reception of media output, produced by, for or about ethnic minorities? * What informs the questions media researchers ask and pursue when examining the mass media and ethnic minorities? * What are the principal forces of change currently shaping the field? There are few media issues more pressing, or potentially more consequential, than the representation of ethnic minorities. This authoritative text therefore brings together leading international researchers who have examined some of the latest processes of change (and continuity) informing the field of ethnic minorities and the media. Numerous studies of 'race', racism and the mass media have been conducted in the past. However, both the media landscape and the cultural field of ethnic minorities are fast changing, and this book addresses the recent developments which have threatened to outpace our ability to map, understand and intervene in processes of change. Presented in an accessible style, this book provides the reader with an overview of the very latest research findings and informed discussion. It opens with an introductory essay which maps recent approaches to the field, followed by substantive chapters which are structured thematically to address key processes of change such as media representations, media production, and cultures of identity.

Book Synopsis National Stereotyping, Identity Politics, European Crises by :
Download or read book National Stereotyping, Identity Politics, European Crises written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articulation of collective identity by means of a stereotyped repertoire of exclusionary characterizations of Self and Other is one of the longest-standing literary traditions in Europe and as such has become part of a global modernity. Recently, this discourse of Othering and national stereotyping has gained fresh political virulence as a result of the rise of “Identity Politics”. What is more, this newly politicized self/other discourse has affected Europe itself as that continent has been weathering a series of economic and political crises in recent years. The present volume traces the conjunction between cultural and literary traditions and contemporary ideologies during the crisis of European multilateralism. Book Synopsis Decisiveness and Fear of Disorder by : Julius Maximilian Rogenhofer
Download or read book Decisiveness and Fear of Disorder written by Julius Maximilian Rogenhofer and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2024-03-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisiveness and Fear of Disorder examines how democratic representatives make decisions in crisis situations. By analyzing parliamentary asylum debates from Germany’s Asylum Compromise in 1992-1993 and the 2015-2016 refugee crisis, Julius Rogenhofer identifies representatives’ ability to project decisiveness as a crucial determinant for whether the rights and demands of irregular migrants were adequately considered in democratic decision-making. Both crisis situations showcase an emotive dimension to the parliamentary meaning-making process. As politicians confront fears of social and political disorder, they focus on appearing decisive in the eyes of the public and fellow representatives, even at the expense of human rights considerations and inclusive deliberation processes. Rogenhofer shows how his theoretical approach allows us to reinterpret a range of crisis situations beyond the irregular migration context, including democracies’ initial responses to Covid-19, the European Sovereign Debt Crisis, and United States climate politics. These additional case studies help position concerns with decisiveness amid the challenges that populism and technocracy increasingly pose to representative democracies.
Book Synopsis Taking on Technocracy by : Dolores L. Augustine
Download or read book Taking on Technocracy written by Dolores L. Augustine and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German abandonment of nuclear power represents one of the most successful popular revolts against technocratic thinking in modern times—the triumph of a dynamic social movement, encompassing a broad swath of West Germans as well as East German dissident circles, over political, economic, and scientific elites. Taking on Technocracy gives a brisk account of this dramatic historical moment, showing how the popularization of scientific knowledge fostered new understandings of technological risk. Combining analyses of social history, popular culture, social movement theory, and histories of science and technology, it offers a compelling narrative of a key episode in the recent history of popular resistance.
