Da der Mensch in die Natur und Umwelt interveniert, minimieren sich natürliche Ökosysteme, weiten sich kulturelle Landschaften aus und es entwickeln sich Ballungsgebiete. In diesem Zusammenhang sollte das Umweltbewusstsein durch die Umweltpädagogik unterstützt werden. Dabei sollte sich die Umweltpädagogik am Handeln und Belassen der Menschen orientieren; sie steht für das 'Wohl der Natur' und für die Beständigkeit der Menschheit. Aus diesem Grund nimmt sich die Umweltpädagogik Aufgaben und Methoden an, die Verhalten wandeln und Handlungseifer steigern sollen. Umweltpädagogik muss sich im alltäglichen Handeln und Belassen sowie in alltäglichen Lebenskonstellationen auszeichnen.
