Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Zur Wahl des Themas meiner Bachelorarbeit kam ich durch ein Gespräch mit einer anderen Studentin, die mit ihrer Familie nach Deutschland immigrierte. Wir sprachen über unsere Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen in und mit Deutschland. Unter anderem erzählte sie mir die Geschichte einer Migrantenfamilie. Diese Familie hat zwei Kinder. Der ältere Sohn war 18, als die Familie nach Deutschland kam. Er wurde von seiner gewohnten Umgebung, von allem, was ihm wichtig war, losgerissen. Zwei Jahre später konnte er sich hier immer noch nicht zu Recht finden und sich an die neue Umgebung anpassen. Mit 20 hatte er deutliche Anzeichen einer Schizophrenie. Einige Zeit später warf er seinen damals zweijährigen Bruder vom Balkon aus dem neunten Stockwerk eines Hauses. Der Kleine überlebte es wie durch ein Wunder. Der ältere Bruder lebt seitdem in einer Einrichtung für betreutes Wohnen für psychisch Kranke. Diese Geschichte erschütterte mich zutiefst und brachte auf die Überlegungen, ob Migrationsfolgen tatsächlich solch tiefe Spuren in der Psyche eines Menschen hinterlassen können. Falls ja was kann einen Menschen davor schützen? Warum verläuft bei einigen Menschen der Migrationsprozess erfolgreich und warum können sie vieles in ihrem neuen Leben erreichen, während andere sich in der neuen Umgebung nicht zu Recht finden, sich verloren fühlen und ihr Leben noch schlechter ist, als in ihrem Herkunftsland? Das Thema meiner Arbeit geht mir auch deswegen nah, weil ich selbst aus einem anderen Land komme und meine ersten Erlebnisse in Deutschland, als ich hier als Au-pair arbeitete, eher negativ waren. Mit fremder Kultur, anderen Normen, Traditionen und Ansichten konfrontiert, konnte ich sie nicht verstehen und nicht annehmen. Als ich zum zweiten Mal nach Deutschland kam, ging es mir viel besser. Ich hatte einfach Glück, dass diesmal neben mir mein Mann war, der mir half, vieles zu verstehen und zu erklären, und meine Vorurteile zu überwinden. Ich hatte jemanden, mit dem ich meine Erlebnisse und Probleme teilen konnte. Während meines Studiums wurde das Thema psychischer Erkrankungen bei Migranten nicht angesprochen. Daher habe ich mich dazu entschieden, diese Thematik selbständig zu bearbeiten und in den Mittelpunkt meiner Bachelorarbeit zu stellen. Nach dem Fall der Mauer sind neben den so genannten Gastarbeiter*innen aus der Türkei, Italien, Spanien, Griechenland, Portugal und den Ländern des damaligen Jugoslawiens viele Spätaussiedler*innen aus Rumänien, Polen und den Gebieten der GUS-Staaten nach Deutschland ausgewandert. Anfang der 1990er Jahre stellten dann viele Flüchtlinge aus den durch Krieg gezeichneten Balkan-Gebieten Asylanträge in Deutschland. (Vgl.Tucci 2008:200) Neben al den Hoffnungen und Erwartungen die diese Menschen während und nach ihrer Zuwanderung mit sich tragen, erleben sie in der neuen fremden Heimat auch Hindernisse und Ablehnung. Schwierigkeiten mit der neuen Sprache, Probleme im Umgang mit der neuen Kultur und nicht zuletzt Heimweh machen vielen Migrant*innen das Leben schwer. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Belastungen können sich psychische Störungen entwickeln. So wende ich mich in dieser Arbeit diesem komplexen Thema zu und möchte erarbeiten, in welchem Zusammenhang Migration und psychische Störungen stehen. Mein Erkenntnisinteresse ist dabei zum einen die migrationsgebundenen Einflussfaktoren auf psychische Erkrankungen und ihre Wichtung zu erkennen und zum anderen habe ich die Hoffnung, Verständnis und Bewusstsein für die schwierige Situation von Migrant*innen in einem fremden Land zu schaffen.

Beginning in the 1970s, survey data indicated that the average migrant was a young, unmarried man who was poor, undereducated, and in search of better employment opportunities. This is the general view that most Americans still hold of immigrants from Mexico. On the Move argues that not only does this view of Mexican migrants reinforce the stereotype of their undesirability, but it also fails to capture the true diversity of migrants from Mexico and their evolving migration patterns over time. Using survey data from over 145,000 Mexicans and in-depth interviews with nearly 140 Mexicans, Filiz Garip reveals a more accurate picture of Mexico-U.S migration. In the last fifty years there have been four primary waves: a male-dominated migration from rural areas in the 1960s and '70s, a second migration of young men from socioeconomically more well-off families during the 1980s, a migration of women joining spouses already in the United States in the late 1980s and ’90s, and a generation of more educated, urban migrants in the late 1990s and early 2000s. For each of these four stages, Garip examines the changing variety of reasons for why people migrate and migrants’ perceptions of their opportunities in Mexico and the United States. Looking at Mexico-U.S. migration during the last half century, On the Move uncovers the vast mechanisms underlying the flow of people moving between nations.
