Book excerpt: Rhetoric and stylistics deal with successful human communication and the arrangement of language in texts. As the most influential of all language-related disciplines, rhetoric has an ancient tradition and is presently experiencing a remarkable revival. Stylistics analyzes the structures of texts with regard to their semantic potential and their function in the life of the individual and in society. The handbook offers surveys of theoretical approaches, forms of linguistic practice and practical contexts from antiquity to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two fields of contemporary Native American literature and culture exist in the tension between two literary traditions: the Native oral and literary tradition and the modern Western mainstream literary influence. In her North Dakota quartet Love Medicine (1984), The Beet Queen (1986), Tracks (1988), The Bingo Palace (1994), Native American mixedblood author, Louise Erdrich (b. 1954) exemplifies where and how these traditions meet and interact. A postmodern reading of the quartet shows that Native American authors and literary critics alike need not be afraid to tread into postmodernism, since an interpretation from this perspective opens up the possibility of freeing Native American literature from the limiting label of "ethnic or minority literature" and of establishing it as a vital part of American literature. This postmodern interpretation of Louise Erdrich's quartet offers a discussion of the theoretical issues involved in the context of ethnic writing and its relation to postmodernism, as well as an analysis of her intricate narrative strategies, in particular, her use of multiple perspectives and of intertextual techniques. The main part of the interpretation consists of a reading of postmodern concepts such as magical realism, carnivalesque humor, the relationship between reader and text, gender roles and sexual identities, history and textuality, the trickster figure, and games and chance as can be found in Louise Erdrich's North Dakota quartet.

Book excerpt: The Most Brilliant Contribution To Postcolonial Criticism Since Edward Said S Orientalism & A Masterpiece Of Calm, Well-Thought-Out, Cogent And Inspiring Analysis Jane Marcus, Cuny Graduate Center And The City University Of New York Sara Suleri S The Rhetoric Of English India Is A Powerful Challenge To The Obsession With Otherness That Is A Trademark Of Colonial Studies. Where Other Scholars Tend To Observe A Strict Separation Between Works By Western And Non-Western Writers And Between Ruling And Subject Races, Suleri Reconstructs A Narrative In Which English And Indian Idioms Play With, And Against, Each Other. By Studying A Wide Range Of Materials, From The Writings Of Burke To The Travel Logs Of Nineteenth-Century Women Such As Fanny Parkes And Harriet Tytler To The Fiction Of Kipling, Forster, Naipaul And Rushdie, Suleri Deftly Reveals The Complicity That Always Operates In Colonial Literature. In Doing So, Suleri Succeeds Not Only In Challenging The Standard Chronology Of Imperial History, But Also In Fundamentally Recasting Contemporary Discourse On The Theories Of Cultural Empowerment.

Book excerpt: An entertaining and enlightening proposal for a new way to read Native American literature. How can a square peg fit into a round hole? It can’t. How can a door be unlocked with a pencil? It can’t. How can Native literature be read applying conventional postmodern literary criticism? It can’t.That is Craig Womack’s argument in Red on Red. Indian communities have their own intellectual and cultural traditions that are well equipped to analyze Native literary production. These traditions should be the eyes through which the texts are viewed. To analyze a Native text with the methods currently dominant in the academy, according to the author, is like studying the stars with a magnifying glass. In an unconventional and piercingly humorous appeal, Womack creates a dialogue between essays on Native literature and fictional letters from Creek characters who comment on the essays. Through this conceit, Womack demonstrates an alternative approach to American Indian literature, with the letters serving as a “Creek chorus” that offers answers to the questions raised in his more traditional essays. Topics range from a comparison of contemporary oral versions of Creek stories and the translations of those stories dating back to the early twentieth century, to a queer reading of Cherokee author Lynn Riggs’s play The Cherokee Night.Womack argues that the meaning of works by Native peoples inevitably changes through evaluation by the dominant culture. Red on Red is a call for self-determination on the part of Native writers and a demonstration of an important new approach to studying Native works-one that engages not only the literature, but also the community from which the work grew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a first, theoretical part, this study analyzes what role "otherness" plays in the most influential moral-philosophical approaches to date - from Aristotle and the Neo-Aristotelians (Alasdair MacIntyre, Martha Nussbaum) via Kantianism and its deconstructors (Jean-Francois Lyotard, J. Hillis Miller) to the works of Paul Ricoeur and Emmanuel Levinas - and sheds light on its highly problematic status in Western notions of justice and aesthetics. Starting from a revised notion of the sublime, the second part uses the different theoretical approaches to interpret four American novels (Harriet Beecher Stowe's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', Herman Melville's 'Billy Budd, Sailor', Richard Wright's 'Native Son', and N. Scott Momaday's 'House Made of Dawn'), and examines how far the respective moral-philosophical systems carry in elucidating these texts, as well as what role literary-historical and generic strategies play in dramatizing the encounter with "otherness".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a genealogy of colonial discourse, Suleri focuses on paradigmatic moments in the multiple stories generated by the British colonization of the Indian subcontinent. Both the literature of imperialism and its postcolonial aftermath emerge here as a series of guilty transactions between two cultures that are equally evasive and uncertain of their own authority. "A dense, witty, and richly allusive book . . . an extremely valuable contribution to postcolonial cultural studies as well as to the whole area of literary criticism."—Jean Sudrann, Choice
