Es konnte eine quantitative Querschnittsstudie anhand der erhobenen Daten mit insgesamt 221 Teilnehmern durchgeführt werden. Die Stichprobe setzt sich aus weiblichen, männlichen und Nutzern zusammen, welche sich als divers klassifizieren. Die Probanden dieser Forschungsarbeit sind zwischen 13 und 63 Jahre alt. Der Online-Fragebogen umfasst 31 Items, die der Erfassung von soziodemographischen Daten, der Nutzungsintensität, des Selbstwertes, des sozialen Vergleiches sowie Fear of Missing out (FoMo) dienen. Die Konstrukte wurden durch die Zuhilfenahme der deutschen Variante der Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Selbstwert), Social Comparision Scale (soziale Vergleichsorientierung) und Fear Of Missing Out Scale erfasst. Zur Überprüfung der Forschungsfrage "Welcher Zusammenhang besteht zwischen Selbstwert, sozialem Vergleich und FoMo?" wurden acht Zusammenhangshypothesen aufgestellt. Die Anzahl der aktiven weltweiten Nutzer von sozialen Medien ist laut Statista (2021) seit dem Jahr 2015, mit 2,08 Milliarden Verwendern, auf 4,2 Milliarden Nutzer im Jahr 2021 angestiegen. Insbesondere die Altersgruppe 14 - 29 Jahre hat ein ausgeprägtes Nutzerverhalten, von der 45 % permanent online ist. Damit stellen die sozialen Netzwerke ein gängiges Kommunikationsmittel im 21. Jahrhundert dar. Mittlerweile ist die Nutzung sozialer Medien als Selbstverständlichkeit in Alltagsroutinen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Die digitale Ebene kann laut Clayton, Leshner & Almond (2015) als eine Erweiterung des eigenen Selbst angesehen werden.

Des Weiteren wird das methodische Vorgehen erläutert. Am Ende des Exposés steht der Ausblick auf die zu erwartenden Ergebnisse sowie eine kritische Reflexion des Vorgehens. Nicht mehr wegzudenken ist das Internet in dem 21. Jahrhundert und damit verbunden die sozialen Netzwerke. Die Nutzerzahlen steigen und sind insbesondere bei der Altersgruppe 14 - 29 Jahre stark ausgeprägt, von denen 45 % permanent online ist. Eine Umfrage des ARD/ZDF im Jahr 2020 hat ergeben, dass Facebook mit 26 % sowie Instagram mit 20 % nach WhatsApp mit 78 % die beiden wöchentlich am häufigsten genutzten Kanäle in Deutschland sind. Soziale Plattformen werden verwendet, um mit Freunden in Kontakt zu bleiben sowie auf dem aktuellen Stand zu sein, was Neuigkeiten sowie bevorstehende Events betrifft.
