Meine These, die ich mit dieser Hausarbeit belegen möchte, lautet: Martha Nussbaums aristotelischer Sozialdemokratismus ist nicht so aristotelisch, wie er klingt, denn Aristoteles verfolgt vielmehr eine aristokratische politische Philosophie, als eine sozialdemokratische oder demokratische Politik! Die zentrale Frage, die sich daraus ergibt und die ich versuchen werde zu klären, lautet: Wie aristotelisch ist Frau Nussbaums aristotelischer Sozialdemokratismus? Im Folgenden wird zunächst ein kurzer Einblick in die praktische Philosophie des Aristoteles gegeben sowie seine Gerechtigkeitskonzeption auf Grundlage des fünften Buches der „Nikomachischen Ethik“ erläutert. Daraufhin wird auf den von Nussbaum geschilderten „aristotelischen Sozialdemokratismus“ eingegangen und in diesem Zusammenhang die Gerechtigkeitstheorie der US-amerikanischen Philosophin erläutert. Meine Arbeit wird sich vor allem auf Nussbaums Wirken in den 1990er Jahren und den beginnenden 2000er Jahren fokussieren, da sie diese Phase besonders der Erforschung des guten Lebens widmete. Daraufhin werde ich mich der Kritik an Nussbaums aristotelischem Sozialdemokratismus, wie sie Richard Mulgan äußert, zuwenden. Im Schlussteil der Arbeit wird auf die bereits genannte zentreale Frage eingegangen, indem ich prüfe, ob man Aristoteles aus heutiger Sicht als Sozialdemokraten bezeichnen kann. Außerdem werde ich meine These anhand geeigneter Stellen aus Aristoteles Nikomachischer Ethik sowie der Politik belegen.

Though the founding text of speech act theory, J. L. Austin's How to Do Things with Words, repeatedly expels literature from the domain of felicitous speech acts, literature is an indispensable presence within Austin's book. It contains many literary references but also uses as essential tools literary devices of its own: imaginary stories that serve as examples and imaginary dialogues that forestall potential objections. How to Do Things with Words is not the triumphant establishment of a fully elaborated theory of speech acts, but the story of a failure to do that, the story of what Austin calls a "bogging down." After an introductory chapter that explores Austin's book in detail, the two following chapters show how Jacques Derrida and Paul de Man in different ways challenge Austin's speech act theory generally and his expulsion of literature specifically. Derrida shows that literature cannot be expelled from speech acts—rather that what he calls "iterability" means that any speech act may be literature. De Man asserts that speech act theory involves a radical dissociation between the cognitive and positing dimensions of language, what Austin calls language's "constative" and "performative" aspects. Both Derrida and de Man elaborate new speech act theories that form the basis of new notions of responsible and effective politico-ethical decision and action. The fourth chapter explores the role of strong emotion in effective speech acts through a discussion of passages in Derrida, Wittgenstein, and Austin. The final chapter demonstrates, through close readings of three passages in Proust, the way speech act theory can be employed in an illuminating way in the accurate reading of literary works.

Whereas the tradition of emulating classical ideals in German intellectual life has generally emerged from the impulse to identify with models, the challenge of translating the Greeks underscores the linguistic and historical discontinuities inherent in the recourse to ancient material and inscribes that experience of disruption as fundamental to modernity. Friedrich Hölderlin's translations are a case in point. Regarded in his own time as the work of a madman, his renditions of Sophoclean tragedy intensify dramatic effect with the unsettling experience of familiar language slipping its moorings. His attention to marking the distances between ancient source text and modern translation has granted his Oedipus and Antigone a distinct longevity as objects of discussion, adaptation, and even retranslation. Cited by Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Bertolt Brecht, and others, Hölderlin's Sophocles project follows a path both marked by various contexts and tinged by persistent quandaries of untranslatability. Tragedy has long functioned as a cornerstone for questions about ethical life. By placing emphasis on processes of translation and adaptation, however, Tragic Effects approaches the question of ethics from a perspective informed by recent discourse in translation studies.
