Book excerpt: On the Internet, we generate data every day that we often think is harmless - our Likes, our location or our browser history. But companies that own this data can use AI algorithms to derive intimate information from it. Do we suffer from mental illness? Do we abuse substances? Are we rich or poor? Such algorithms are used to treat people differently in an automated way - when it comes to the price of insurance, the selection of applicants in hiring processes, decisions about credit or immigration. The combination of Big Data and AI is currently producing a new technology of population management. This development leads to a new form of power in our societies, to which we all contribute through our data and which we therefore need to discuss critically and ethically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: English summary: John Dryden's poem Alexander's Feast or The Power of Music - an Ode in Honour of St. Cecilia's Day (1697) was highly praised by critics and set to music by Georg Friedrich Handel in 1736. The musical version, too, was a celebrated work of art. Even though the poem was written for St. Cecilia's Day, it is set not in the Christian era but in the time of Alexander the Great after his conquest of the Persian capital Persepolis. This collection of essays explores the piece from different perspectives (English Literature, Classical Philology, Musicology, Theology) and provides new results gained from interdisciplinary studies. Special attention is paid to the relationship between language and music. The book includes a list of performances containing unpublished material as well as a discography and indices of names and objects. It is thus a useful compendium both for specialists and a broader public. German text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book examines the ambivalences of data power. Firstly, the ambivalences between global infrastructures and local invisibilities challenge the grand narrative of the ephemeral nature of a global data infrastructure. They make visible local working and living conditions, and the resources and arrangements required to operate and run them. Secondly, the book examines ambivalences between the state and data justice. It considers data justice in relation to state surveillance and data capitalism, and reflects on the ambivalences between an "entrepreneurial state" and a "welfare state." Thirdly, the authors discuss ambivalences of everyday practices and collective action, in which civil society groups, communities, and movements try to position the interests of people against the "big players" in the tech industry. The book includes eighteen chapters that provide new and varied perspectives on the role of data and data infrastructures in our increasingly datafied societies. Andreas Hepp is Professor of Media and Communications and Head of ZeMKI, Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research, University of Bremen, Germany. He is the author of 12 monographs including The Mediated Construction of Reality (with Nick Couldry, 2017), Transcultural Communication (2015) and Cultures of Mediatization (2013). Juliane Jarke is a senior researcher at the Institute for Information Management Bremen (ifi b) and Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) at the University of Bremen, Germany. Jarke co-edited The Datafication of Education (with Andreas Breiter, 2019) and Probes as Participatory Design Practice (with Susanne Maa, 2018). Leif Kramp is a post-doctoral media, communication and history scholar and Research Coordinator of the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research at the University of Bremen (ZeMKI), Germany. Book excerpt: The more intensively we exploit the urban and rural landscape, the greater the demands we place on our environment and what it can provide. Demographic change, shrinking cities, urban expansion, climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources are confronting us with challenges of ever greater magnitude. Solar fields and bio-energy crops are changing the face of the landscape and new traffic and energy infrastructure criss-crosses the countryside. Meanwhile, vast efforts are being made to adapt existing infrastructure to meet changing demands. In the process, it has once again become clear that we must consider our use of natural resources not just from a local perspective but within a broader context. Green infrastructure strategies can take quite different forms, ranging from floodwater protection measures to the integration of traffic and energy systems and the development of urban green. The goal for society is to improve the diversity and resilience of our environment and to minimize the effects of climate change. In essays, interviews and profiles of the best realized projects from the past few years, Green Infrastructure examines the challenges and tasks facing contemporary landscape architecture and what it can achieve to address them. This book is published on the occasion of the awarding of the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2015.
