Im zweiten Teil werden die räumlichen und zeitlichen Dimensionen skizziert, in denen die Konstruktion empirischer Gesellschaften erfolgt: Institutionen, Strukturen und Legitimationen, Zeichen, Diskurse und Medien. Dass sich die Sozialtheorie überhaupt der kommunikativen Handlungen zuwenden muss, liegt in ihrer wachsenden Bedeutung und Mediatisierung durch Digitalisierung, Interaktivierung und den Wandel zur Kommunikationsarbeit begründet. DieseEntwicklung wird im dritten diagnostischen Teil als Kommunikationsgesellschaft analysiert.
