Der Begriff Stadt bezeichnet also einen Ort, in dessen Zentrum Handel und Gewerbe stehen, der sich aber auch rechtlich von seinem Umland unterscheidet. Die nachfolgende Arbeit wird sich mit der Entwickelung der deutschen Stadt des Mittelalters von ihren frühen Wurzeln im 5. Jahrhundert bis zu der Entstehung der idealtypischen Stadt des Mittelalters und ihrer Blütezeit im 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts befassen.

Eine Phase der Entfaltung und des Wachstums?“, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: 1. Einleitung Die Stadt im engeren Sinne als demografische Einheit im Hochmittelalter, das heißt im zwischen 10. und 13. Jahrhundert ist nur schwerlich mit der heutigen Definition von Stadt anhand der Einwohnerzahl gleichzusetzen. So wird heutzutage in der Stadtdemografie nach Einwohnerzahlen in verschiedene Formen von Städten differenziert, beginnend mit der Landstadt mit einer Einwohnerzahl von unter 5 000. Darauf folgt die Kleinstadt mit einer entsprechenden Einwohnerzahl von mindestens 5 000 und maximal 20 000 Einwohnern, die Mittelstadt mit 20 000 bis 100 000 Einwohnern und die typische Großstadt mit mehr als 100 000 Einwohnern. Städte mit über 1 000 000 Einwohnern gelten dabei als Welt- oder Millionenstadt. Für das Hochmittelalter sind allerdings gesicherte Zahlen bezüglich der Einwohnerzahlen der Städte aufgrund der langen Zeit und möglicherweise problematischen Quellenlage gewiss schwer nachvollziehen. Evident erscheint dabei jedoch, dass sich der Definitionsrahmen einer Stadt anhand ihrer Einwohnerzahl sicherlich deutlich nach unten bewegen muss, um den Strukturen einer mittelalterlichen Stadt gerecht werden zu können. Konsequenterweise konnte eine mittelalterliche Großstadt kaum eine Einwohnerzahl von über einer Million haben. Insgesamt beschäftigt sich diese Hausarbeit mit den sozialen Strukturen der Stadt im hochmittelalterlichen deutschsprachigen Territorium zur Zeit der Salier und Staufer. Begonnen wird mit einer Klassifikation der mittelalterlichen Stadt anhand ihrer Einwohnerzahlen. Darauf folgt eine überblicksartige Darstellung der Entwicklung der Stadt im Hochmittelalter auf deutschsprachigem Territorium, deren Ursachen und Konsequenzen. Darauf basierend folgt nun der eigentliche Hauptteil dieser Arbeit mit der Analyse der Bevölkerungsstrukturen der hochmittelalterlichen Stadt mit dem Schwerpunkt derer sozialer Strukturen. Dazu werden die Einwohner der mittelalterlichen in vier soziale Gruppen differenziert und deren Stellung im städtischen Leben genauer zu analysieren versucht. Am Ende folgt ein kurzes Fazit, verbunden mit einer Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit.
