Book Synopsis Between Lay Piety and Academic Theology by :
Download or read book Between Lay Piety and Academic Theology written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-02-06 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the relation between lay piety and academic theology has determined the faith of lay people as well as developments in theology, and influenced daily life as well as scholarly discussions. In this book an international and multidisciplinary panel of specialists, covering the fields of church history, history of literature, music history, book history, and art history reflects on a broad range of research topics, providing a fascinating and refreshing view on what this relation has been throughout the centuries. Christoph Burger has given a major impulse to the research into the history of theology, notably the issue of adapting academic theology for lay people. The contributions to this Festschrift reflect this broad spectrum of correlations between learned theology and lay piety from the Early Church period until modern times. The book contains contributions to the research on lay piety as well as academic theology in the Middle Ages, Reformation, and the modern period, as well as their representations in such media as printed books and woodcuts. The result is a truly epoch-transcending and interdisciplinary volume.
Book Synopsis 'Church' at the Time of the Reformation by : Anna Vind
Download or read book 'Church' at the Time of the Reformation written by Anna Vind and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume aims at a clarification and a discussion of the church in the 16th century: What did the reformers think about the essence and origin of the holy, apostolic and Catholic church? What was seen as the aim of it, its task and mission? Can human beings see the true church or not? Does it have one existence in this world and another in the world to come? Furthermore, the concept of church is indissolubly connected to the theological concepts of sin, faith, justification, sanctification, and salvation, and the study of the church also involves reflection upon the nature and scope of the sacraments, the role of the clergy, the aim of church-buildings, the significance of church properties and upon the constituent parts of the mass/church service. Finally, and not least, it is important to investigate the role of the church in the societies of the 16th century, such as the impact of the ruling powers upon them, their significance for education and social cohesion, and the cultural significance of migrating believers, on the run within and beyond the borders of Europe. Together with theological, philosophical and art-historical questions, these issues are considered in order to create a much fuller picture of the church at the time of the Reformation.

As far as the reception-history is concerned, several contributions deal with the use of the Song in Byzantine, Medieval, German Romantic and modern Greek Literature. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the collection new perspectives and avenues of appraoch are opened.
Book Synopsis Mysterium Ecclesiae by : F. Ledegang
Download or read book Mysterium Ecclesiae written by F. Ledegang and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting-point of this book is that for Origen the object of religious knowledge is a mystery. Therefore he shrinks from using 'definitions', by which in his opinion the mystery is literally 'restricted'. This also applies to the Church. About her can only be spoken 'in a manner of speaking' and by means of images. The Bible itself leads the way in this respect. Therefore one must not stick to the literal meaning of the text, but one must try to understand it spiritually. Origen traces the meaning of the biblical images of the Church. Sometimes he elaborates them or puts them in a new context. But he also creates new images to describe the Church and already detects in the Old Testament all kinds of types of the Church. Analyzing all these images the author gives insight in Origen's ecclesiology.
