Book Synopsis Baumgarten and Kant on the Foundations of Practical Philosophy by : Courtney D. Fugate
Download or read book Baumgarten and Kant on the Foundations of Practical Philosophy written by Courtney D. Fugate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, scholarship on Kant and modern German philosophy has become increasingly focused on understanding their historical roots. Central to this development is the work of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-62), whose textbooks profoundly influenced later generations of German philosophers. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), in particular, lectured from Baumgarten's textbooks, including those on moral and legal philosophy, for well over thirty years. Following the recent English translation of Baumgarten's key works, this volume is the first comprehensive reappraisal of the relationship between his and Kant's thoughts on the grounding principles of moral philosophy. The chapters--all written by leading researchers who have shaped or are now reshaping the field--cover the whole range of key concepts in the foundations of practical philosophy: obligation, law, goodness, motivation, imputation, conscience, the relationship between ethics and right, and many more. Later chapters provide a comparative look at Kant's and Baumgarten's place within the wider tradition of natural law. Scholars familiar with the field will discover new perspectives on well-received findings, while newcomers will find a comprehensive introduction to the key topics and debates of current research.
Book Synopsis Karl Philipp Moritz by : Mark Boulby
Download or read book Karl Philipp Moritz written by Mark Boulby and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1979-12-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete biographical and critical study of Karl Philipp Moritz (1756–93), German novelist, teacher, journalist, and philologist. His psychological novel, Anton Reiser, replete with insights into the sociological and psychological life of the time, was one of the most important eighteenth-century German novels. Moritz was in close touch with most of the major intellectual currents in Weimar and Berlin—from aesthetics and linguistics on the one hand to pietistical and mystical movements on the other—and he was a friend of Goethe and of other significant German literary figures as well. His career was a turbulent one, made all the more difficult by his many-sided psychological problems, which play a large role in his autobiographical writings. Karl Philipp Moritz has never been totally forgotten, but scholarly interest in him has increased dramatically in the last few decades. His works, particularly Anton Reiser, have also generated considerable popular interest. This is the first comprehensive monograph on this multi-faceted modern writer—an amazing fact in light of the homage paid Moritz by such contemporaries as Goethe, Schiller, and Jean Paul. Mark Boulby has succeeded admirably in relating all the frequently disparate ideas of Moritz to the trends of the period, and has combined theoretical analysis and biographical investigation in a readable and lively book.

Wessell and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1982 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schiller defined the object of beauty as «living form.» He explicitly related his thesis to a rationalistic aesthetics of form and to an empiricistic aesthetics of life. First the problem of aesthetic theorizing is treated. In the light of this discussion, respectively, the aesthetics of life, form, and living form are analyzed. First the respective ontological universe of each aesthetic theory is developed, then the aesthetic universe in terms of ontological commitments, and finally the specific interpretation of beauty is outlined.

Book Synopsis Baumgarten and Kant on Metaphysics by : Courtney D. Fugate
Download or read book Baumgarten and Kant on Metaphysics written by Courtney D. Fugate and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baumgarten and Kant on Metaphysics explores the metaphysics of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (17141762) and its decisive influence on Immanuel Kant. For over a century, scholars have recognized the significance of Baumgarten's Metaphysics, both because of its impact on Kant's intellectual development, and because of the way it fundamentally informed the work of generations of German philosophers, including Moses Mendelssohn, Thomas Abbt, Johann Gottfried Herder, Solomon Maimon, Johann August Eberhard, and arguably even Georg Friedrich Hegel. However, Baumgarten's Metaphysics has only recently become available in reliable German and English translations; as such, many scholars have been excluded from the discussion and the significance of Baumgarten's work has remained largely unexplored. Thus with the appearance of these translations, interest in Baumgarten's work has surged. This collection provides an anchor for this emerging discussion by presenting chapters by some of the scholars most responsible for Baumgarten's current reputation, together with some of the best young scholars in this emerging field.
