Das Ziel ist es, einen wissenschaftlichen Einblick in die Komplexität des Themas zu geben. Als Erstes wird dazu die moderne Jugendphase thematisiert. Es wird geklärt, was es heute bedeutet, „jugendlich“ zu sein und welche Entwicklungsaufgaben für diese Lebensphase relevant sind. Besonders wird hier der Stellenwert der Sozialen Medien hervorgehoben. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird dann zunächst der Prozess der Identitätsbildung und der Sozialisation beleuchtet. Darauf aufbauend wird der Einfluss der Sozialen Medien untersucht. Im dritten Teil geht es um die Chancen, vor allem aber auch um die Gefahren der Sozialen Medien, nicht nur im Zusammenhang mit der Identitätsbildung, sondern allgemein für das Leben von Jugendlichen. Daraus werden Anstöße für das pädagogische Handeln abgeleitet.

Der erhebliche Stellenwert des Internet als Sozialisationsmedium wirft die Frage auf, inwiefern sich die Nutzung positiv und negativ auswirkt; welche Folgen und Konsequenzen die Nutzung des Web 2.0 auf die Herausbildung der Identität hat und wie der Begriff der Identität im virtuellen Zeitalter zu fassen ist.
