Book excerpt: Excerpt from Die Ahnfrau IN presenting their edition of Die Aanfrau to the school public, the editors wish to point out that this first and justly famous work of Grillparzer has never before been edited for English-speaking pupils, although recommended in the Report of the Com mittee of Twelve of the Modern Language Association of America It is thought that this play will be found interesting to pupils in the third high school or second college year because of the dramatic intensity of the action and the rapidity with which the play hastens along; while the simple sentence structure and the inherent poetic value of the language will charm the student without confusing him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Russian Symbolist movement was dominated by a concern with transcending sex, many of the writers associated with the movement exhibited an intense preoccupation with matters of the flesh. Drawing on poetry, plays, short stories, essays, memoirs, and letters, as well as feminist and psychoanalytic theory, Beyond the Flesh documents the often unexpected form that this obsession with gender and the body took in the life and art of two of the most important Russian Symbolists. Jenifer Presto argues that the difficulties encountered in reading Alexander Blok and Zinaida Gippius within either a feminist or a traditional, binary gendered framework derive not only from the peculiarities of their creative personalities but also from the specific Russian cultural context. Although these two poets engaged in gendered practices that, at times, appeared to be highly idiosyncratic and even incited gossip among their contemporaries, they were not operating in a vacuum. Instead, they were responding to philosophical concepts that were central to Russian Symbolism and that would continue to shape modernism in Russia.

Book excerpt: The Plays of Grillparzer presents a compilation of the works of Franz Grillparzer, a famous Austrian dramatist, with emphasis on the significant features of his dramatic technique. This book presents some generalizations about what characterizes his tragedies and makes them effective. Comprised of five chapters, this book starts with an overview of Grillparzer's two plays for the popular stage, namely, Die Ahnfrau (1897) and Der Traum ein Leben (1834). This text then reviews the characteristics of Grillparzer's Greek tragedies wherein he prefers direct action to narrative. Other chapters examine the classic spirit of his second poetic drama, Sappho, which is characterized as halfway between a tragedy of fate and a tragedy of character. The final chapter examines the characterization in Grillparzer's third play, Libussa, wherein he uses an unusual extent to explain a situation, or the speaker's plans and emotions. This book is a valuable resource for readers who are interested in Franz Grillparzer's works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fritz Wittels (1880-1950) was a pioneering Viennese psychoanalyst, the first biographer of Freud (1924), and intermittently friend and rival of Freud himself, of Wilhelm Stekel, and of their famous satirical adversary, Karl Kraus. Towards the end of his life, while living and practising as an analyst in the United States, Wittels wrote a two-hundred-page memoir of his early life and career in Vienna. The typescript memoirs, held in the archives of the Abraham Brill Library, New York, are published here for the first time, accompanied by a range of little-known illustrations. Incomplete in places, they have been deftly edited, contextualised and introduced by Edward Timms, whose many valuable explanatory notes include the identification of the 'child woman' of the title. In his memoirs Wittels writes frankly and vividly about the erotic sub-culture of fin-de-siecle Vienna and about early controversies within the Psychoanalytic Society. His picture of the interaction between the two is startlingly original, and will appeal not only to historians of psychoanalysis, but to anyone interested in the Viennese cultural avant-garde. The erotic triangles in which Wittels, Kraus and Freud were involved are shown to have impinged directly on the activities of the famous Society. Freud himself plays a crucial role in the story, and the book as a whole is of exceptional importance for the origins of psychoanalysis.
