Book Synopsis Gloses et commentaire du livre XI du Contra Proclum de Jean Philopon by : Pascal Mueller-Jourdan
Download or read book Gloses et commentaire du livre XI du Contra Proclum de Jean Philopon written by Pascal Mueller-Jourdan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the Materia Prima is certainly one of the most important challenges of late antique Physics. It is interesting to note that such a difficulty has never been focused on an exhaustive treatise in Antiquity. If the question of the matter resists any investigation, it is because the matter is radically 'aneideos' (without form) even though it is the condition 'sine qua non' of the existence of all forms in the sensible world. The present study proposes the first translation in French of the entire eleventh Book of the Philoponus' Contra Proclum (VIe s.) which precisely discusses the status of the Prime Matter. After having clarified the context of such a question in the Neoplatonic Alexandrian School, it puts forward a detailled step-to-step analysis of the Philoponian argument, the notions used by him and a new general theory which attempts to evaluate the pertinence and the internal coherence of his contribution to this very problematic question.
Book Synopsis From Polysemy to Semantic Change by : Martine Vanhove
Download or read book From Polysemy to Semantic Change written by Martine Vanhove and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a joint project on lexical and semantic typology which gathered together field linguists, semanticists, cognitivists, typologists, and an NLP specialist. These cross-linguistic studies concern semantic shifts at large, both synchronic and diachronic: the outcome of polysemy, heterosemy, or semantic change at the lexical level. The first part presents a comprehensive state of the art of a domain typologists have long been reluctant to deal with. Part two focuses on theoretical and methodological approaches: cognition, construction grammar, graph theory, semantic maps, and data bases. These studies deal with universals and variation across languages, illustrated with numerous examples from different semantic domains and different languages. Part three is dedicated to detailed empirical studies of a large sample of languages in a limited set of semantic fields. It reveals possible universals of semantic association, as well as areal and cultural tendencies.

Book Synopsis Greek Myth and the Bible by : Bruce Louden
Download or read book Greek Myth and the Bible written by Bruce Louden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the nineteenth-century rediscovery of the Gilgamesh epic, we have known that the Bible imports narratives from outside of Israelite culture, refiguring them for its own audience. Only more recently, however, has come the realization that Greek culture is also a prominent source of biblical narratives. Greek Myth and the Bible argues that classical mythological literature and the biblical texts were composed in a dialogic relationship. Louden examines a variety of Greek myths from a range of sources, analyzing parallels between biblical episodes and Hesiod, Euripides, Argonautic myth, selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Homeric epic. This fascinating volume offers a starting point for debate and discussion of these cultural and literary exchanges and adaptations in the wider Mediterranean world and will be an invaluable resource to students of the Hebrew Bible and the influence of Greek myth.

Book Synopsis Castalia: Studies in Indo-European Linguistics, Mythology, and Poetics by : Laura Massetti
Download or read book Castalia: Studies in Indo-European Linguistics, Mythology, and Poetics written by Laura Massetti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of Indo-European Studies, linguists have attempted to reconstruct aspects of the Indo-European traditions that go beyond the ‘atomic’ dimensions of related languages, such as inherited aspects of Indo-European texts and traits shared by cognate pantheons and narratives. The chapters in this volume address these very aspects of cultural reconstruction. Interdisciplinary case-studies on poetic features, religion and mythology of several ancient Indo-European languages (Ancient Greek, Latin and Italic, Hittite, Phrygian, Sanskrit, Avestan, Old Norse, Old Irish and Old Russian) work at the intersection of linguistic reconstruction and philology. The results of these investigations shed new light on a variety of aspects, ranging from obscure etymologies to the reconstruction of the genetic link among entire Indo-European myths.
Book Synopsis 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts by : Brigitte Maire
Download or read book 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts written by Brigitte Maire and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin medical texts transmit medical theories and practices that originated mainly in Greece. This interaction took place through juxtaposition, assimilation and transformation of ideas. 'Greek' and 'Roman' in Latin Medical Texts studies the ways in which this cultural interaction influenced the development of the medical profession and the growth of knowledge of human and animal bodies, and especially how it provided the foundations for innovations in the areas of anatomy, pathology and pharmacology, from the earliest Latin medical texts until well into the medieval world.
Book Synopsis Pelagonius and Latin Veterinary Terminology in the Roman Empire by : Adams
Download or read book Pelagonius and Latin Veterinary Terminology in the Roman Empire written by Adams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of Latin veterinary medicine has never been systematically studied. This book seeks to elucidate the pathological and anatomical terminology of Latin veterinary treatises, and the general linguistic features of Pelagonius as a technical writer. Veterinary practice in antiquity cannot be related directly to that of the modern world. In antiquity a man could claim expertise in horse medicine without ever passing an examination. Owners often treated their own animals. The distinction between 'professional' and layman was thus blurred, and equally the distinction between 'scientific' terminology and laymen's terminology was not as clear-cut as it is today. The first part of the book is devoted to some of the non-linguistic factors which influenced the terminology in which horse diseases and their treatment were described.

Book Synopsis Die Erzählung von Meleagros by : Peter Grossardt
Download or read book Die Erzählung von Meleagros written by Peter Grossardt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt belongs to the great mythical cycles of the ancient world. P. Grossardt now offers the first complete presentation of all literary sources of the Calydonian hunt, as well as of other adventures of its central hero Meleagros. The sources have been arranged by genre and their literary context has been taken well into account. The author gives special attention to the development of different versions of the legend. Individual poets, Grossardt observes, used the myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt as a functional element in a larger context or in conscious contrast to older texts. In reconstructing the prehistory of the legend and its religious background, the author shows that the Calydonian boar-hunt myth originally had the function of an aition for the cult of Artemis Laphria and that it was taken up by the epic tradition long before Homer.
Book Synopsis The Flower of Suffering by : Nuria Scapin
Download or read book The Flower of Suffering written by Nuria Scapin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek tragedy occupies a prominent place in the development of early Greek thought. However, even within the partial renaissance of debates about tragedy’s roots in the popular thought of archaic Greece, its potential connection to the early philosophical tradition remains, with few exceptions, at the periphery of current interest. This book aims to show that our understanding of Aeschylus’ Oresteia is enhanced by seeing that the trilogy’s treatment of Zeus and Justice (Dikê) shares certain concepts, assumptions, categories of thought, and forms of expression with the surviving fragments and doxography of certain Presocratic thinkers (especially Anaximander, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, and Parmenides). By examining several aspects of the tragic trilogy in relation to Presocratic debates about theology and cosmic justice, it shows how such scrutiny may affect our understanding of the theological ‘tension’ and metaphysical assumptions underpinning the Oresteia’s dramatic narrative. Ultimately, it argues that Aeschylus bestows on the experience of human suffering, as it is given in the contradictory multiplicity of the world, the status of a profound form of knowledge: a meeting point between the human and divine spheres.
