Book Synopsis Black Girl Autopoetics by : Ashleigh Greene Wade
Download or read book Black Girl Autopoetics written by Ashleigh Greene Wade and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black Girl Autopoetics Ashleigh Greene Wade explores how Black girls create representations of themselves in digital culture with the speed and flexibility enabled by smartphones. She analyzes the double bind Black girls face when creating content online: on one hand, their online activity makes them hypervisible, putting them at risk for cyberbullying, harassment, and other forms of violence; on the other hand, Black girls are rarely given credit for their digital inventiveness, rendering them invisible. Wade maps Black girls’ everyday digital practices, showing what their digital content reveals about their everyday experiences and how their digital production contributes to a broader archive of Black life. She coins the term Black girl autopoetics to describe how Black girls’ self-making creatively reinvents cultural products, spaces, and discourse in digital space. Using ethnographic research into the digital cultural production of adolescent Black girls throughout the United States, Wade draws a complex picture of how Black girls navigate contemporary reality, urging us to listen to Black girls’ experience and learn from their techniques of survival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded second place in the 2017 AJN Book of the Year Awards in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. "I welcome, at long last, a book on global mental health targeted to nurses, the front-line health worker for billions of people around the world. The roles that nurses can, and should, play in mental health care are diverse and this book addresses both well-trod as well as emerging concerns across the continuum of care from promotion to prevention to treatment. Importantly, at the heart of this diversity is the foundation of compassion and care, the hallmark of the nursing profession." – Vikram Patel, Professor of International Mental Health and Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow in Clinical Science, Centre for Global Mental Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK Psychiatric disorders have consistently been identified as serious and significant global burdens of disease, yet meeting the needs of people in mental distress has not often been a priority in health care. This important reference work sets out the knowledge base for understanding the state of mental health care globally, and translating that into effective practice. The Handbook provides a historical and contemporary context of mental health care, identifies and discusses evidence-based standards of care and strategies for mental health promotion and explores the need to deliver care from interdisciplinary and community-based models, placing these imperatives within a human rights and empowerment framework. It is made up of four core sections which look at: Key and emerging issues that affect global mental health practice and research, including the social context of health; Evidence-based health promotion strategies for major areas of practice internationally; A range of country studies, reflecting different problems and approaches to mental health and mental health care internationally; and What constitutes empowering practice. The only comprehensive work looking at global perspectives on mental health nursing, this is an invaluable reference for all students, academics and professionals involved in mental health research with an interest in global or cross-cultural issues.
Book Synopsis Journal of Rachel Wilson Moore: 1863-4 (Abridged, Annotated) by : Rachel Wilson Moore
Download or read book Journal of Rachel Wilson Moore: 1863-4 (Abridged, Annotated) written by Rachel Wilson Moore and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2016-11-27 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Civil War raged during its worst years, Rachel Moore and her husband left cold New York for the Caribbean in an attempt to restore her failing health. At times it seemed the voyage itself was going to kill her. But she survived and kept a journal of her keen observations of life in the islands. What shocked her the most was the state of Caribbean slavery; worse, in her mind, than what she had seen traveling through the American south. A Quaker and an abolitionist, slavery was an absolute evil to her. Her descriptions of slave life, the islands, the people, and what she loved about her time there are all fascinating to read. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.
