His Dialogue on Ancient and Modern Music, published in 1581 or 1582 and now translated into English for the first time, was among the most influential music treatises of his era. Galilei is best known for his rejection of modern polyphonic music in favor of Greek monophonic song. The treatise sheds new light on his importance, both as a musician who advocated a new philosophy of music history and theory based on an objective search for the truth, and as an experimental scientist who was one of the founders of modern acoustics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it was influential for several hundred years after it first appeared, doubts about the authenticity of the Platonic Alcibiades I have unnecessarily impeded its interpretation ever since. It positions itself firmly within the Platonic and Socratic traditions, and should therefore be approached in the same way as most other Platonic dialogues. It paints a vivid portrait of a Socrates in his late thirties tackling the unrealistic ambitions of the youthful Alcibiades, urging him to come to know himself and to care for himself. François Renaud and Harold Tarrant re-examine the drama and philosophy of Alcibiades I with an eye on those interpreters who cherished it most. Modern scholars regularly play down one or more of the religious, erotic, philosophic or dramatic aspects of the dialogue, so ancient Platonist interpreters are given special consideration. This rich study will interest a wide range of readers in ancient philosophy.

Book excerpt: One of Ireland's greatest collections of stories and poems, The Dialogue of the Ancients of Ireland is a new translation by Maurice Harmon of the 12th century Acallam na Senorach. Retold in a modern idiom, the Dialogue is an extraordinary account of journeys to the four provinces by St Patrick and the pagan Cailte, one of the surviving Fian. Within the frame story are over 200 other stories reflecting many genres - wonder tales, sea journeys, romances, stories of revenge, tales of monsters and magic. The poems are equally varied - lyrics, nature poems, eulogies, prophecies, laments, genealogical poems. After the Tain Bo Cuailnge, the Acallam is the largest surviving prose work in Old and Middle Irish

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Dialogue in Antiquity reexamines evidence for Greek dialogue between the mid-fourth century BCE and the mid-first century CE - that is, roughly from Plato's death to the death of Philo of Alexandria. Although the genre of dialogue in antiquity has attracted a growing interest in the past two decades, the time covered in this book has remained overlooked and unresearched, with scholars believing that for much of this period the dialogue genre went through a period of decline and was revived only in the Roman times. The book carefully reassesses Post-Platonic and Hellenistic evidence, including papyri fragments, which have never been discussed in this context, and challenges the narrative of the dialogue's decline and subsequent revival, postulating, instead, the genre's unbroken continuity from the Classical period to the Roman Empire. It argues that dialogues and texts creatively interacting with dialogic conventions were composed throughout Hellenistic times, and proposes to reconceptualize the imperial period dialogue as evidence not of a resurgence, but of continuity in this literary tradition.

Near Eastern Studies, in one form or another, have been part of the Groningen curriculum almost from the beginning. For this reason the Department of Middle-Eastern Languages and Cultures decided to contribute to the anniversary celebrations by organizing an international Symposium and a Workshop on The Literary Debate in Semitic and Related Literatures. The topic of the Symposium and the Workshop was chosen and prepared by the members of the research programme Disclosure of Semitic Texts. Since 1985 the literary debate in the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hebrew, Aramaic/Syriac and Arabic language and literature has been a central theme within this Groningen research programme. Because the research group sees as one of its tasks to place the study of the literary and cultural heritage of the Ancient and Mediaeval Near East also in the wider context of its connection with Classical Antiquity and the European Middle Ages, specialists in Byzantine and Mediaeval Studies were also invited to contribute to the Symposium and Workshop. The present volume contains the contributions presented during the Symposium and Workshop on The Literary Debate in the Semitic and Related Literatures. Some of the more important issues regarding matters of genesis, development and possible interdependence of the dispute poems, dialogues and related texts, which can all be subsumed under the general type of 'debate', are discussed in the introduction, which also reflects a number of points raised in the discussions during the Workshop itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary science teaches that humans arose as a population, sharing common ancestors with other animals. Most readers of the book of Genesis in the past understood all humans descended from Adam and Eve, a couple specially created by God. These two teachings seem contradictory, but is that necessarily so? In the fractured conversation of human origins, can new insight guide us to solid ground in both science and theology? In The Genealogical Adam and Eve, S. Joshua Swamidass tests a scientific hypothesis: What if the traditional account is somehow true, with the origins of Adam and Eve taking place alongside evolution? Building on well-established but overlooked science, Swamidass explains how it's possible for Adam and Eve to be rightly identified as the ancestors of everyone. His analysis opens up new possibilities for understanding Adam and Eve, consistent both with current scientific consensus and with traditional readings of Scripture. These new possibilities open a conversation about what it means to be human. In this book, Swamidass untangles several misunderstandings about the words human and ancestry, in both science and theology explains how genetic and genealogical ancestry are different, and how universal genealogical ancestry creates a new opportunity for rapprochement explores implications of genealogical ancestry for the theology of the image of God, the fall, and people "outside the garden" Some think Adam and Eve are a myth. Some think evolution is a myth. Either way, the best available science opens up space to engage larger questions together. In this bold exploration, Swamidass charts a new way forward for peace between mainstream science and the Christian faith.

As the editors of this volume in his honor note, the care and sensitivity of his reading of the Hebrew text are well known, and he lavishes equal attention on his own writing, to the benefit of all who read his work, which now includes the first of two volumes in the Anchor Bible commentary on Proverbs (the next volume is in preparation), as well as monographs on wisdom literature in ancient Israel and elsewhere, and many articles. The rigor that he brought to his own work he also inflicted on his students, and they and a number of his colleagues honor him with their contributions to this volume. I hail from an ancient line of werewolves, so you’d think being me would be easy. If only two very important things were not standing in my way. ONE: Zach Brighton - my betrothed. TWO: My wolf was very different! Everyone said I should be happy he still wanted me. I was not. Then, I met someone else, a mystery man who changed everything, but held secrets of his own that threatened his ability to claim me. Maybe I wasn’t meant to be claimed. Maybe I was broken. Or Maybe, I was just waiting for my new life to catch up. This is book ONE of The Ancients Series. This paranormal romantic suspense story MUST be read in order. The main character's story concludes in book 4, but all four of those books are already available! 1 - Shadows of the Ancients 2 - Falling into the White 3 - Branches of the Willow 4 - Bound by the Moon 5 - Stars from Author J. Kirsch - One sexy, witty, enticingly snarky wolf girl? Check. A unique take on werewolf power and relationship dynamics? Check. This is an overall fun read with dialogue that will have you laughing out loud at times and raising your eyebrows at others. In one evening I ran across this deliciously wolfy paranormal book, and a few hours later I had to buy book #2 and #3 in the series. Yes, it's THAT good. If you like Patricia Briggs or Jeaniene Frost, you will enjoy Ms. Butler's writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truthfully and accurately, this book attempts to elucidate the nature and forms of China’s ancient wisdom and reinterpret its ideological significance, thereby activating its inherent vitality and promoting the construction of contemporary Chinese thought. The wisdom of China, with its own discourse system, gives unique stipulations to existence, thought and language. Confucianism, Taoism and Chan Buddhism, as the historical manifestations of Chinese wisdom, respectively express the thoughts between man and man, between man and nature, and between man and mind. In fact, these three aspects exactly constitute the whole of man’s life world. The thoughts of Confucianism, Taoism and Chan Buddhism are mainly and respectively represented in The Four Books and Five Classics, Lao-Zi and Zhuang-Zi, and Tan-Jing (The Sutra of Hui Neng). The wisdom of China, different from the non-natural wisdom of the West, is fundamentally a natural wisdom, according to which nature is the basis of human existence, thought and language. However, in early modern times, the natural history of China was confronted with an unprecedented crisis. Ever since then, China has entered the post natural era. The coexistence of Heaven and man, as the new wisdom of China, can be created in the age of globalization through preserving the living elements and eliminating the dead parts in the traditional Chinese wisdom.
