Book Synopsis Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity by : Maarten Van Delden
Download or read book Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity written by Maarten Van Delden and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity, Maarten van Delden argues that there is a fundamental paradox at the heart of Fuentes's vision of Mexico and in his role as novelist and critic in putting forth that vision. This paradox hinges on the tension between national identity and modernity. A significant internal conflict emerges in Fuentes's work from his attempt to stake out two different positions for himself, as experimental novelist and as politically engaged and responsible intellectual. Drawing from the fiction, literary essays, and political journalism, van Delden places these tensions in Fuentes's work in relation to the larger debates about modernity and postmodernity in Latin America. He concludes that Fuentes is fundamentally a modernist writer, in spite of the fact that he occasionally gravitates toward the postmodernist position in literature and politics. Van Delden's thorough command of the subject matter, his innovative and sometimes iconoclastic conclusions, and his clear and engaging writing style make this study more than just an interpretation of Fuentes's work. Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity offers nothing less than a comprehensive analysis of Fuentes's work. Carlos Fuentes, Mexico, and Modernity offers nothing less than a comprehensive analysis of Fuentes's intellectual development in the context of modern Mexican political and cultural life.

Book Synopsis Cruelty and Utopia by : Jean-François Lejeune
Download or read book Cruelty and Utopia written by Jean-François Lejeune and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2005-02-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark collection of illustrated essays explores the vastly underappreciated history of America's other cities -- the great metropolises found south of our borders in Central and South America. Buenos Aires, So Paulo, Mexico City, Caracas, Havana, Santiago, Rio, Tijuana, and Quito are just some of the subjects of this diverse collection. How have desires to create modern societies shaped these cities, leading to both architectural masterworks (by the likes of Luis Barragn, Juan O'Gorman, Lcio Costa, Roberto Burle Marx, Carlos Ral Villanueva, and Lina Bo Bardi) and the most shocking favelas? How have they grappled with concepts of national identity, their colonial history, and the continued demands of a globalized economy? Lavishly illustrated, Cruelty and Utopia features the work of such leading scholars as Carlos Fuentes, Edward Burian, Lauro Cavalcanti, Fernando Oayrzn, Roberto Segre, and Eduardo Subirats, along with artwork ranging from colonial paintings to stills from Chantal Akerman's film From the Other Side. Also included is a revised translation of Spanish King Philip II's influential planning treatise of 1573, the "Laws of the Indies," which did so much to define the form of the Latin American city.
Book Synopsis Our Lady of Guadalupe by : Jeanette Rodriguez
Download or read book Our Lady of Guadalupe written by Jeanette Rodriguez and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most important religious symbol of Mexico and one of the most powerful female icons of Mexican culture. In this study, based on research done among second-generation Mexican-American women, Rodriguez examines the role the symbol of Guadalupe has played in the development of these women. She goes beyond the thematic and religious implications of the symbol to delve into its relevance to their daily lives. Rodriguez's study offers an important reinterpretation of one of the New World's most potent symbols. Her conclusions dispute the common perception that Guadalupe is a model of servility and suffering. Rather, she reinterprets the symbol of Guadalupe as a liberating and empowering catalyst for Mexican-American women.
Book Synopsis Remembrances of Our Family’s Extraordinary Journeys by : Maria E. Faith
Download or read book Remembrances of Our Family’s Extraordinary Journeys written by Maria E. Faith and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an autobiographical account of my childhood journeys with my parents, 4 older sisters and 2 older brothers. My parents immigrated to America in the first quarter of the 1900s with their families; they met and were married in Arizona and 3 sisters and 1 brother were born there, and I and 1 brother and 1 sister were born in California. A large part of the book deals with the struggles of looking for work in various regions in these two states, and the resulting uprooting of family to go and temporarily live where work was found. There were many sacrifices made to keep family together. The other part of the book reveals the personal struggles I had because of moving to Maneadero, BC, Mexico in 1958 with my mother and attending the local Village School. Struggles? Yes, but soon overcome by the loving friendships developed with the Villagers, Shopkeepers, Teachers and Students. Fun was had, but there were a few God-sent events that became life-changing experiences for me.
