Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The captivating nature of these contributions to political economy - which were all published between 1976 and 1996, but mostly in the last decade - is a clear reflection of Sir Alan's authoritative standing both as an academic economist and a government economic advisor. . . . the book addresses a wide range of philosophical questions and practical policy issues, thus offering plenty of stimulating material for both the theoretical and applied economist, as well as other social scientists.' - M. Teresa Lunati, The Economic Journal '. . . many of the papers are worth reading, and each paper has a useful introduction explaining the context in which it was written. The best part of the book is the selection of papers in the last part, especially his [Alan Peacock's] discussions of the regulation of broadcasting. There is much for an economist to learn from these papers: the role economists can play in public policy debates, the inner workings of committees, the role of information control in policy decisions.' - William Sjostrom, Kyklos The Political Economy of Economic Freedom brings together a timely selection of Sir Alan Peacock's views on economic freedom, its philosophy, its influence on the critique of economic policy and the problems encountered in expanding it.

Download or read book The Rise of the English Regions? written by Irene Hardill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes devolution as it affects the English Regions, working from the perspective of uneven development, and drawing on the rich tradition of regional geography. Currently, London is the power centre ruling over the other English regions. The first part of the book looks at how this regional structure has arisen, and the theories that can be used to analyze it. The contributors discuss the nature of regional problems and governance, the institutions involved in regional governance and regional approaches to economic development. The second part of the book devotes a chapter to each English region, examining each region’s unique characteristics, and the opportunities created for it by devolution. By looking carefully at the regions, this part of the book sheds light on the question of whether Regional governance benefits the regions, or simply rescales governance to introduce another layer of bureaucracy.

Download or read book British Dogmatism and French Pragmatism written by Douglas E. Ashford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, British Dogmatism and French Pragmatism presents an inquiry into how national political and administrative constraints affect the formulation and implementation of local government reform. This comparative study between British and French local politics and policymaking discusses themes like local reorganization in the welfare state; two paths from monarchy to democracy; decisions and non-decisions; can national politics make local policy; fiscal policy and local spending; capital spending and land use; and central-local politics in the welfare state. The author argues that the influence of local government systems cannot be assessed apart from the national political and administrative structures in which they are embedded. This book is a must read for scholars and researchers of political science, public administration and policy making.
Book Synopsis Power, Voting, and Voting Power by : M. J. Holler
Download or read book Power, Voting, and Voting Power written by M. J. Holler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any normative theory of democracy involves notions of equity, which are supposed to guide collective decisions. On the other hand, a descriptive theory of any decision-making body must take into account the distribution of power in that body. The development of collective decision theory along two different paths reflects these two foci of interest in the theory of democracy. One direction can be subsumed under the theory of social choice, the other under the theory of games. In the theory of social choice, the participants are characterized only by their preferences among a set of alternatives (candidates, courses of action, etc. ). They do not choose among these alternatives. They only submit their preferences to some central authority ("the Society"), which then chooses among the alternatives in accordance with some fixed rule of aggregating the preferences. On the other hand, the point of departure in the theory of games is a set of actors, each of whom can choose between alternative courses of action (strategies). The totality of choices results in an outcome, which gener ally has different utilities for the different actors. In this book, both approaches are presented in selected papers, from which the reader can get an excellent overview of the state of the art. Both branches of formal decision theory, the theory of social choice and the theory of games, were developed in mathematical language, but very little technical mathematical knowledge is required to follow the arguments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, in the late 1960's, did ethnic minorities such as Scots and Welsh, Quebecois, Bretons and Basques unexpectedly begin to protest and assert their demands with fresh vigor, confidence, and even violence? What are the factors that help to explain the activation of these ethnic political movements, some of which now threaten the continued integrity of such long-established states as Canada and Great Britain? This book represents the first systematic attempt to deal with the re-emergence of ethnic conflict in Western societies. In addition to three historical and theoretical essays, there are eleven case studies of countries where ethnic nationalism has become politically significant. In a concluding chapter the editor comments on the theoretical and policy implications of the country studies.
