Book excerpt: St. Teresa of Avila tells us, " I took for my advocate and lord the glorious Saint Joseph and commended myself earnestly to him...he gave me greater blessings than I could ask of him. I do not remember even now that I have ever asked anything of him which he has failed to grant. " This hidden saint, the blessed foster-father of our Lord and protector of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a powerful intercessor for us, as well as a model of perfect virtue. The bible records not a single word of his, yet we know that in the holy house at Nazareth, the young Jesus the Word made Flesh was subject to him. Through this series of daily meditations for the month of March, we may increase our devotion to this great saint while also making a fruitful use of the days of Lent. As patron not only of fathers and of the worker, but of the universal church, all of us men and women, old and young would do well to look to him in our every need.

Book excerpt: Chosen by God for the incomparable vocation of spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Our Lord Jesus Christ; St. Joseph received magnificent divine graces and favors not granted even to the Old Testament Patriarchs. Known as the most humble of men; St. Joseph received from Almighty God the authority to command both Our Lady and the Son of God Himself; and in Heaven he continues to have great intercessory power with God. The Divine Favors Granted to St. Joseph shows how this greatest of the Patriarchs is the patron of all Christians and how wonderfully he answers prayers; plus; it gives many of the ways of honoring him and many prayers to request his intercession. One of the finest books on St. Joseph; it will surely inspire the reader with a profound devotion to this great "Patron of the Universal Church."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Joseph is mentioned only eight times in the New Testament Gospels. Prior to the late medieval period, Church doctrine rarely noticed him except in passing. But in 1555 this humble carpenter, earthly spouse of the Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus, was made patron of the Conquest and conversion in Mexico. In 1672, King Charles II of Spain named St. Joseph patron of his kingdom, toppling St. James--traditional protector of the Iberian peninsula for over 800 years--from his honored position. Focusing on the changing manifestations of Holy Family and St. Joseph imagery in Spain and colonial Mexico from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries, this book examines the genesis of a new saint's cult after centuries of obscurity. In so doing, it elucidates the role of the visual arts in creating gender discourses and deploying them in conquest, conversion, and colonization. Charlene Villaseñor Black examines numerous images and hundreds of primary sources in Spanish, Latin, Náhuatl, and Otomí. She finds that St. Joseph was not only the most frequently represented saint in Spanish Golden Age and Mexican colonial art, but also the most important. In Spain, St. Joseph was celebrated as a national icon and emblem of masculine authority in a society plagued by crisis and social disorder. In the Americas, the parental figure of the saint--model father, caring spouse, hardworking provider--became the perfect paradigm of Spanish colonial power. Creating the Cult of St. Joseph exposes the complex interactions among artists, the Catholic Church and Inquisition, the Spanish monarchy, and colonial authorities. One of the only sustained studies of masculinity in early modern Spain, it also constitutes a rare comparative study of Spain and the Americas.

After being espoused to the Virgin Mary, he found her with child and, being "a just man and unwilling to put her to shame" (St. Matthew 1:19), decided to divorce her quietly; but an angel told him that the child was the Son of God and was conceived by the Holy Ghost. Obeying the angel, Joseph took Mary as his wife. After Jesus' birth at Bethlehem in Judea, where the Holy family received the Magi, an angel warned Joseph and Mary about the impending violence against the child by King Herod the Great of Judea, whereupon they fled to Egypt. Years later the angel again appeared to Joseph, informing him of Herod's death and instructing him to return to the Holy Land. Avoiding Bethlehem out of fear of Herod's successor, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus settled in Nazareth (St. Matthew 2:22-23) in Galilee, where Joseph taught his craft of carpentry to Jesus. Joseph is last mentioned in the Gospels when he and Mary frantically searched 3 days for the 12 year old Jesus in Jerusalem, where they found him in the Temple (St. Luke 2:41-48). Joseph's death is believed to have occurred before Jesus' public ministry, as he is no longer mentioned. Although the veneration of Joseph seems to have begun in Egypt, the earliest Western devotion to him dates from the early 14th century, when the Servites, an order of mendicant friars, observed his feast on March 19, the traditional day of his death. Among the subsequent promoters of the devotion was Pope Sixtus IV, who introduced it at Rome c. 1479, and the celebrated 16th-century mystic St. Teresa of Avila. Already patron of Mexico, Canada, and Belgium, Joseph was declared patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870. In 1955 Pope Pius XII established the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker as May 1 in counter-celebration to the Communists' May Day. Recitation of the Little Office of Saint Joseph has been granted a partial indulgence according to the Enchiridion of Indulgences. However, there is no current version of this Office that conforms to the modern Office of the Church: the Liturgy of the Hours. This new composition of the indulgenced Office retains the essential structure of the original, while integrating it into modern usage. As Wednesday is traditionally viewed as being linked to Saint Joseph, it would be especially significant to pray this Office each Wednesday.

Book excerpt: Saint Joseph is a powerful intercessor with God because he is both the father of Jesus and the spouse of the Madonna. As St Teresa of Avila said, Jesus does not deny anything to those who pray to St Joseph, because as on earth he was subjected to him because he was his father, so even in Heaven he refuses nothing to what Saint Joseph asks of him. Let us imitate St. Theresa of Avila, and as we ask for intercession with the God of St. Joseph, let us pray with belief and devotion. In this book you will find some original prayers to St. Joseph, which were composed by author.

Book excerpt: This volume is a faithful extract, without change, modification. or alteration, taken from the celebrated production, The Mystical City of God of Mary of Jesus of Agreda.. Hence, all the approbations conferred on the latter work are applicable to this. We subjoin a sketch of these various approbations, of which we guarantee the authenticity, having copied them from the acts of the process for the beatification and canonization of the servant of God, Maria d'Agreda. Who among the faithful, feels not a holy desire to know the admirable life of the glorious Patriarch whom the divine Providence gave to be the spouse of the august Queen of Heaven, and whom the Son of God called Father? It seems to us that the souls consecrated to God, who all have St. Joseph for their patron and protector, will rejoice to read thelife of him towards whom they have so particular a devotion. Has not the seraphic St. Teresa made known to the world that St. Joseph is so powerful and so merciful that helps us in all things. What a heartfelt joy it is to instruct ourselves in all that constitutes the glory and the grandeur of our incomparable Patriarch. God, in the wise designs of His Providence, chose to conceal much of what related to this Saint who has no equal and will never be equal. This work also contains a section of sentiments on devotion to Saint Joseph from Olier and on the Devotion of Saint Teresa of Avila to Saint Joseph.
