Book excerpt: In this unique and highly entertaining autobiography, Alf Taylor chronicles his life growing up in the infamous New Norcia Mission, north of Perth in the fifties and sixties. At once darkly humorous and achingly tragic, God, The Devil and Me tells of the life and desperation of the young children forced into the care of the Spanish Nuns and Brothers who ran the Mission. Their lives made up of varying degrees of cruelty and punishments, these children were the 'little black devils' that God and religion forgot. Written with an acerbic and brutal wit, Alf intersperses dark childhood memories with a Monty Pythonesque retelling of the Bible, in which Peter is an alcoholic and Judas is a good guy.As a child, underfed, poorly clothed and missing his family, Alf sought refuge in the library in the company of Shakespeare and Michelangelo. He writes with joy about the camaraderie of the boys, their love of sport and their own company, but also notes that many descended into despair upon leaving. Most died early. Alf Taylor is one of the 'lucky ones'.'At once horrific and hilarious, this ''little black devil'' has created a work unique not just in Aboriginal writing, but in Australian literature altogether.' - Dennis Haskell, Australian poet, critic and academic

Sean McDowell Grasping This Truth Will Change Your View of God Forever If God is good and all-powerful, why doesn't He put a stop to the evil in this world? Christians and non-Christians alike struggle with the concept of a loving God who allows widespread suffering in this life and never-ending punishment in hell. We wrestle with questions such as... Why do bad things happen to good people? Why should we have to pay for Adam's sin? How can eternal judgment be fair? But what if the real problem doesn't start with God...but with us? Clay Jones, an associate professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University, examines what Scripture truly says about the nature of evil and why God allows it. Along the way, he'll help you discover the contrasting abundance of God's grace, the overwhelming joy of heaven, and the extraordinary destiny of believers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prizewinning journalist and Brazilian native Juliana Barbassa comes a deeply reported and beautifully written account of the seductive and chaotic city of Rio de Janeiro as it struggles with poverty and corruption on the brink of the 2016 Olympic Games. Juliana Barbassa moved a great deal throughout her life, but Rio was always home. After twenty-one years abroad, she returned to find her native city—once ravaged by inflation, drug wars, corrupt leaders, and dying neighborhoods—undergoing a major change. Rio has always aspired to the pantheon of global capitals, and under the spotlight of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games it seems that its moment has come. But in order to prepare itself for the world stage, Rio must vanquish the entrenched problems that Barbassa recalls from her childhood. Turning this beautiful but deeply flawed place into a pristine showcase of the best that Brazil has to offer in just a few years is a tall order—and with the whole world watching, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Library Journal called Dancing with the Devil in the City of God “akin to Charlie LeDuff’s Detroit”—a book that “combines history and personal interviews in an informative and engaging work.” This kaleidoscopic portrait of Rio introduces the reader to the people who make up this city of extremes, revealing their aspirations and their grit, their violence, their hungers, and their splendor, and shedding light on the future of this city they are building together. Dancing with the Devil in the City of God is an insider perspective from a native daughter and “a fascinating look at the people who live in and aspire to change one of the world’s most impressive cities” (Booklist, starred review).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Is All There Is and The Devil Does Not Exist seeks to bring about awareness and remind us of Who We Really Are; for God is All There Is and there is No-thing else. There is only One-Consciousness that has individuated It-self and, thusly, there is no Devil in absolute form (as is taught and projected by many). All That Is, existed in a state of being, without the means to express Its being; in a state of being, God is No-thing unto Himself. Out of this conceptual knowing, God/All That Is longed to express, explore and experience It-self for what It knows It-self to be. And so the No-Thing created Some-Thing/Some-Form (all of creation), as a means or device(s), through which It can express, explore and experience It-self fully and abundantly. We live in a world driven by fear, scarcity, competition, chaos, pain, struggle, confusion and discord. It is my firm conviction that all these factors have been born and taken root because we have forgotten, Who We Really Are. God Is All There Is and The Devil Does Not Exist is directed to all the men and women around the globe, who are entangled in shackles of fear, constructed by mythical beliefs and teachings about God and the mock Devil, which have been served to us for eons. The message I bring seeks to liberate and unchain us from these restraints. "So that we can live freely and express, explore and experience That Which Is within more fully and abundantly."

In Ether, God and Devil, Wilhelm Reich describes the process of functional thinking and reveals how the inner logic of this objective thought technique led him to the discovery of cosmic orgone energy. In Cosmic Superimposition, Reich steps beyond the character structure of man to an understanding of how man is rooted in nature. The super-imposition of two orgone-energy systems which is demonstrable in the genital embrace is revealed as a common functioning principal that exists in all of nature. Concluding this work, Reich returns to the human sphere "to ponder about the greatest riddle of all: the ability of man to think, and by mere thinking to know what nature is and how it works."

Equally, the poetry of Burns provides penetrating insights into religious life in Scotland and religion in general. This is the starting premise of this enlightening book. Told chronologically, it recounts the story of Burns' life from his family's background in the Mearns to his early death in Dumfries and his influence beyond. Integral to Burns' life was his relationship with God and religion and the fascinating dilemma - how did this intensely moral man reconcile his faith with his notoriously libertarian lifestyle?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last fifteen years a controversial new theory of the origins of biological complexity and the nature of the universe has been fomenting bitter debates in education and science policy across North America, Europe, and Australia. Backed by intellectuals at respectable universities, Intelligent Design Theory (ID) proposes an alternative to accepted accounts of evolutionary theory: that life is so complex, and that the universe is so fine-tuned for the appearance of life, that the only plausible explanation is the existence of an intelligent designer. For many ID theorists, the designer is taken to be the god of Christianity. Niall Shanks has written the first accessible introduction to, and critique of, this controversial new intellectual movement. Shanks locates the growth of ID in the last two decades of the twentieth century in the growing influence of the American religious right. But as he shows, its roots go back beyond Aquinas to Ancient Greece. After looking at the historical roots of ID, Shanks takes a hard look at its intellectual underpinnings, discussing modern understandings of thermodynamics, and how self-organizing processes lead to complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. He considers cosmological arguments for ID rooted in so-called "anthropic coincidences" and also tackles new biochemical arguments for ID based on "irreducible biological complexity." Throughout he shows how arguments for ID lack cohesion, rest on errors and unfounded suppositions, and generally are grossly inferior to evolutionary explanations. While ID has been proposed as a scientific alternative to evolutionary biology, Shanks argues that ID is in fact "old creationist wine in new designer label bottles" and moreover is a serious threat to the scientific and democratic values that are our cultural and intellectual inheritance from the Enlightenment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can a person write or speak about religion that hasn’t been written or spoken before? Frankly and truthfully not very much. It would seem that religion together with the future of humankind is presently in the hands of religious masters whom are experts at their trade. As much as people are content with the present situation there are as many whom are dissatisfied and amongst the dissatisfied are a few who strive to find a reason behind this chaos. Religion presently is a foundering ship that must not be allowed to die without revealing the best it has. With the world in a state of turmoil and ignorance and the most dangerous contribution being religion, let us attempt to analyse and derive what is causing this turmoil. This is no meagre or easy a task to accomplish nor is accepted religious knowledge wholly sufficient. All human knowledge in the form of Mathematic, science, biology, geography, philosophy and a host of others are essential and compulsory to integrate into religion if a person honestly seeks to find the reason and factors behind ignorance and turmoil. The history of human beings is another compulsory subject that must be added to the mix. As a Muslim I have chosen to concentrate on Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Book excerpt: Decree and declare, binding and loosing, taking back what the devil stole, breaking generational curses, canceling witchcraft - what do they all have in common? They are all myths that cause you to pray ineffectively. They are God-limiting myths that make the devil bigger than he really is. "small devil, BIG GOD" exposes many of these common myths Christians are being taught, myths that keep us in bondage. Knowing truth sets you free, believing myths keeps you in bondage. This book replaces these myths with the truths of scripture so that Christians can pray effectively, and experience true freedom from bondage. This book is and will be very useful to the people of God now and in the future. It is an excellent piece of work presenting "truth" in a readable fashion ... I highly recommend this book to the body of Christ. ... PASTOR JOYCELYN NELSON, Woodbrook Pentecostal Church

Book excerpt: What beliefs are core to the Christian faith? This book is here to help you understand the reason for your hope as a Christian so that you can see it with fresh sight and invite others into the conversation. A lot of Christians take their story—the narratives that give rise to their beliefs—for granted. They pray, go to church, perhaps even read their Bible. But they might be stuck if a stranger asked them to explain what they believe and why they believe it. Author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton unpacks the essential and basic beliefs that all Christians share in a way that is easy to understand and applicable to our lives today. And in a way that will make you excited to be a Christian! Core Christianity covers topics like: Jesus as both fully God and fully man. The doctrine of the Trinity. The goodness of God despite a broken world. The ways God speaks. The meaning of salvation. What is the Christian calling? Includes discussion questions for individual or group use. This introduction to the basic doctrines of Christianity is perfect for those who are new to the faith, as well as those who have an interest in deepening their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
