A partir des corpus recueillis, nous avons étudié les paramètres suivants : longueur moyenne des énoncés, inventaire phonétique, structures syllabiques, pourcentage des consonnes correctes, processus phonologiques. L'évolution des différents paramètres a pu caractériser une progression du système phonologique sur la période considérée. Au regard des résultats obtenus, nous avons également tenté de dresser un profil de l'enfant à 2 ans et à 2 ans et demi.

Ce mémoire de recherche étudie le développement phonologique chez les filles en fonction de leur rang dans la fratrie, variable peu étudiée jusqu’à présent. Nous supposons, selon la place occupée par l’enfant dans la fratrie, que les consonnes seraient acquises à des âges différents, avec un développement plus précoce chez les filles uniques par rapport aux filles puînées. Nous comparons l’acquisition des consonnes, semi-consonnes et clusters afin d’établir si elle est plus précoce chez les uniques que chez les puînées. Nous prenons également en compte le type d’erreurs commises. L’étude a porté sur 68 filles séparées en deux groupes : des enfants uniques et des enfants puînées (âgées de 33 à 39 mois) francophones et scolarisées. L’expérimentation, réalisée d’après un protocole québécois développé par MacLeod et al. (2010) et adaptée à la langue française, a consisté en une tâche de dénomination de 42 images. La modalité de réponses des enfants (spontanée, imitée ou indicée) a également été prise en compte. Statistiquement, le seul résultat significatif concerne l’occlusive bilabiale [b] avec une réussite supérieure chez les puînées. Puînées et uniques acquièrent les consonnes à des âges similaires et produisent le même nombre de mots corrects. Cependant les uniques donnent un plus grand nombre de mots en spontané que les puînées, elles ont moins recours à la production en imité. Les omissions sont plus présentes chez les puînées et les uniques recourent plus aux substitutions. Quant à l’ordre et l’âge d’acquisition, ils sont conformes aux données littéraires, si on exclut la variable rang. Le rang ne semble pas influencer le développement phonologique. Cette variable est donc sans incidence sur ce développement puisque les filles, uniques comme puînées, ont des résultats identiques.

En 1998, OlIer a mis en évidence que le retard ou l'absence de babillage était un indicateur pertinent d'un développement langagier atypique. Par ailleurs, de nombreux travaux translinguistiques ont mis en évidence, à la fois des tendances universelles et des différences dans les caractéristiques phonétiques du babillage et des premiers mots. MacNeilage et Davis (1993, 2000) ont notamment développé un modèle biomécanique de l'acquisition précoce du langage, explicatif de ces tendances universelles, tout en s'inscrivant dans une conception fonctionnelle du langage. Pour eux, l'apprentissage langagier est influencé par l'environnement. Compte tenu de ces connaissances, nous nous sommes fixé l'objectif d'étudier l'acquisition du langage chez un enfant afin de déterminer dans quelles mesures, d'une part, ses productions suivent les tendances universelles et, d'autre part, elles s'en détachent pour se rapprocher des caractéristiques phonétiques de la langue maternelle. Au travers d'une étude longitudinale, nous avons analysé les productions du babillage et des premiers mots d'une enfant francophone entre 9 et 18 mois. Durant 10 mois, nous l'avons filmée pendant une heure tous les quinze jours. 20 vidéos ont été réalisées et regroupées par mois. Nous avons calculé les fréquences d'apparition mensuelles et globales de différents indices: mode et lieu d'articulation des consonnes, voyelles, types de syllabes et associations intrasyllabiques. Nos recherches mettent en évidence, d'une part, que le babil de Jeanne suit les tendances universelles, à l'exception du mode articulatoire et des cooccurrences privilégiées et, d'autre part, que ses premiers mots se différencient fortement du babillage en se rapprochant très tôt de la langue adulte. Nos résultats confirment l'existence de contraintes motrices présentes au moment de l'apparition du babillage et démontrent que la langue maternelle influence fortement les productions lexicales de l'enfant et ce, dès l'apparition du premier mot.

Book excerpt: Un travail antérieur a montré que les grands prématurés, à l'âge de 3 ans et demi, présentaient un retard par rapport aux enfants nés à terme sur le plan lexical et morphosyntaxique. Cette étude prospective longitudinal a comme principale objectif d'évaluer le développement de la phonologie articulatoire des enfants nés prématurément (poids de naissance inférieur ou égal à 1500 grammes et/ou âge gestationnel inférieur ou égal à 32 semaines) et à conclure ou non à un retard ou un déficit dans l'acquisition des consonnes. Nous avons rencontré 52 enfants prématurés d'âge compris entre 3 ans 3 mois et 3 ans 9 mois auxquels nous avons fait passer un protocole d'évaluation phonologique élaboré par Mme M. T. Le Normand, psychologue. Ce protocole consiste en une répétition de 48 mots unis et bissylabiques comprenant pour chacun d'entre eux, une des 16 consonnes étudiées, en position initiale, médiane et finale. L'analyse porte sur les aspects articulatoires et phonatoires de la parole (voisement, lieu et mode d'articulation). Avant d'aborder l'expérimentation proprement dite, nous avons estimé utile de définir les termes de phonétique et phonologie, puis de décrire la mise en place du système phonologique chez l'enfant. Enfin, nous avons exposé un bref rappel de la prématurité. Au teme de ce travail, et grâce aux résultats obtenus, nous avons pu établir que : - à 3 ans et demi, il existe un retard assez significatif sur le plan phonologique chez les prématurés par rapport aux enfants du même âge nés à terme. - sans pouvoir généraliser, de par la répartition inégale de la population, nos résultats tentent à démonter : - que le poids de naissance d'une part et l'âge gestationnel d'autre part, ne sont pas déterminants pour le développement phonologique. - que la croissance intra-utérine est déterminante pour le développement phonologique. - Certaines tendances se dégagent au sein de la population prématurée : il apparait une corrélation entre le niveau socio-culturel et le développement phonologique, une interaction entre l'âge gestationnel et le niveau socio-culturel peut influencer le développement phonologique. Cette étude se poursuivra à 5 et 7 ans afin de vérifier si le retard observé à 3 ans et demi persiste à ces différents âges ou s'il a été comblé.

Book excerpt: Although speech-language pathologists are expected to be able to administer and interpret oral examinations, there are currently no screening tests available that provide careful administration instructions and data for intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)

The pragmatic particles studied are demonstrated to serve both psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic purposes: they lubricate reformulation and contribute to both sociability and social indexation. The study, which combines qualitative and quantitative analysis, is based on a corpus of spontaneous spoken French, comprising 155,000 words, 95 interviews and subjects ranging in age from 7 to 88 years. The sample contains speakers from a broader range of educational backgrounds than is often the case: a butcher, a video-salesman and a toiletteur canin rub shoulders with counter assistants, teachers and doctors.
