Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly half of the nation's history, the steam locomotive was the outstanding symbol for progress and power. It was the literal engine of the Industrial Revolution, and it played an instrumental role in putting the United States on the world stage. While the steam locomotive's basic principle of operation is simple, designers and engineers honed these concepts into 100-mph passenger trains and 600-ton behemoths capable of hauling mile-long freight at incredible speeds. American Steam Locomotives is a thorough and engaging history of the invention that captured public imagination like no other, and the people who brought it to life.
Book Synopsis LMS Locomotive Design & Development by : Tim Hillier-Graves
Download or read book LMS Locomotive Design & Development written by Tim Hillier-Graves and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 1014 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958 one of Britain`s greatest locomotive designers died without public fanfare or recognition, mourned only by his family. Yet William Stanier, arguably one of our greatest engineers and his leader, said of him that without his Chief Draughtsman all he achieved with the LMS would not have been possible. How could such a man slip from our view and remain anonymous, although his Princess Coronations, Black 5s and 8Fs are regarded as three of the finest classes of locomotive ever built? And today many survive as stars to grace the ever growing preservation movement. In reality, Tom Coleman was an intensely private and modest man who never sought recognition or commendation. His need for privacy may be one reason why his life has remained shrouded in mystery for so long, but finally his story has been slowly pieced together from a wide variety of sources, many previously untapped. So now we can see for ourselves his great contribution to railway history and recognise his singular talents.
Book Synopsis The Clayton Type 1: Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives—British Railways Class 17 by : Anthony P. Sayer
Download or read book The Clayton Type 1: Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives—British Railways Class 17 written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative, illustrated guide to the British Railways locomotive series covers its full production lifespan, from 1962–1965. In the early 1960s, the Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive known as The Clayton was conceived as the new standard for British Railways, superseding other Type 1 classes. While the early classes suffered from poor driver visibility, the Claytons were highly successful and popular with operating crews. However, the largely untested high-speed, flat Paxman engines proved to be highly problematic. As a result, the Claytons were eventually withdrawn from BR service by December 1971. Anthony Sayer draws on considerable amounts of archive material to tell the full story of these ‘Standard Type 1’ locomotives and the issues surrounding their rise and fall. Further sources provide insights into the effort and money expended on the Claytons in a desperate attempt to improve their reliability. Supported by over 280 photographs and diagrams, dramatic new insights into this troubled class have been assembled for both historians and modelers alike.
Book Synopsis Railroad Electrification and the Electric Locomotive by : Arthur J. Manson
Download or read book Railroad Electrification and the Electric Locomotive written by Arthur J. Manson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Electrification and the Electric Locomotive: Outline of Principles Involved in Railroad Electrification; A Comparison of Steam and Electric Locomotives; History of Electrification in United States; Data on Electrification in America, Europe and Australia The importance of electrification as a method for increasing the capacity of existing steam railway facilities and reducing the cost of train operation, makes it imperative that railway officers and operating men should have some knowledge concerning the elementary theory, the design, construction, care, and operation of electric locomotives, as well as their application to all classes of railroad service. The electric locomotive is no longer an experiment. Although in the beginning, its use on steam railroads in certain localities was practically compulsory, in order to overcome the smoke nuisance, its relation to the general transportation problem soon surpassed this state, and today, the electric locomotive stands as one of the most feasible means available for meeting the problems incident to the continually increasing traffic density as found on many American railroads. Longer and heavier trains must be handled at higher speeds and the use of electricity appears to be the logical solution of the problem. The reliability of operation of the electric locomotive, and its flexibility of control, have been proved and the advantages that may be expected from electric operation are well known. Electric locomotives are operating successfully over a length of continuous line 440 lines long and during 24 consecutive hours a single locomotive has been able to attain a mileage of 766 miles, while the monthly mileage has reached the high figure of more than 12,000 miles. The economy in fuel consumption per unit of power delivered at the drawbar will become of increasing importance as available fuel resources decrease. Book Synopsis Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive by : J. Parker Lamb
Download or read book Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive written by J. Parker Lamb and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-14 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important contribution to railroad technological history. The book’s strength is the author’s mastery of the mechanical details.” —Mark Reutter, editor, Railroad History The diesel locomotive sent shock waves through rigid corporate cultures and staid government regulators. For some, the new technology promised to be a source of enormous profits; for others, the railroad industry seemed a threat to their very livelihoods. Evolution of the American Diesel Locomotive introduces the reader to the important technological advances that gave rise to diesel engines, examining not only their impact on locomotive design, but also their impact on the economic and social landscapes. J. Parker Lamb describes the development of these technologies, allowing the reader to fully understand how they were integrated and formed a commercially successful locomotive. Like its companion volume, Perfecting the American Steam Locomotive (IUP, 2003), this book emphasizes the role of the leading engineers whose innovations paved the way for critical breakthroughs. Rail fans will appreciate this authoritative work. “A host of books and articles have touched on various aspects of this ongoing story over the years, but none tell the story with the completeness and superb clarity found here.” —Michigan Railfan “Lamb provides the reader with detailed descriptions of every generation of diesel locomotive along with a generous supply of excellent photographs.” —Technology and Culture
Book Synopsis The Metropolitan-Vickers Type 2 Co-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives by : Anthony P. Sayer
Download or read book The Metropolitan-Vickers Type 2 Co-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough history of the Metropolitan-Vickers locomotive, also known as “Class 28,” featuring 160 color and black & white photos. This book provides an in-depth history of the Metropolitan-Vickers diesel-electric Type 2 locomotives, more frequently known collectively as the “Co-Bo’s” due to their unusual wheel arrangement. Twenty locomotives were constructed during the late-1950s for use on the London Midland Region of British Railways. The fleet was fraught with difficulties from the start, most notably due to problems with their Crossley engines, this necessitating the need for extensive rehabilitation work during the early-1960s. Matters barely improved and the option to completely re-engine the locomotives with English Electric units was debated at length, but a downturn in traffic levels ultimately resulted in their demise by the end of 1968 prior to any further major rebuilding work being carried out. Significant quantities of new archive and personal sighting information, supported by over 180 photographs and diagrams, have been brought together to allow dramatic new insights into this enigmatic class of locomotives, including the whole debate surrounding potential re-engining, their works histories, the extended periods in storage, together with in-depth reviews of the various detail differences and liveries.
Book Synopsis North Eastern Electric Stock, 1904–2020 by : Graeme Gleaves
Download or read book North Eastern Electric Stock, 1904–2020 written by Graeme Gleaves and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The north east of England was the cradle of Britain's railways in the 19th Century. It was here George and Robert Stephenson would shape the steam locomotive. Then in the early 20th Century a second transport revolution took place around Newcastle when the suburban lines from the city to the coast were electrified in response to competition from the electric trams. What was created became the blueprint for modern day commuting. This book tells the story behind the creation of that network, the trains that served it. The narrative goes through the success and expansion years and ultimately the troubles that led to its demise. Our story comes full circle with the creation of the Tyne & Wear Metro, a ground breaking transport system that, like the electrified lines nearly 80 years earlier, set a new standard for suburban rail that would be the inspiration for schemes in many other parts of the country.
