Book excerpt: Up to about 30 years' ago diving activity was centred primarily on the naval services, who provided a lead in the development of equipment, techniques and procedures. Apart from one or two spectacular salvage undertakings, the main commercial activity up until that time was fairly low-key work in docks and harbours. The concept of saturation diving emerged from subsea habitats of which Captain Cousteau was one of the pioneers. This led the way to commercial development in support of exploration and the production of offshore oil and gas, and I believe that my friend Henri Delauze was one of the first to mount the subsea habitat on deck and provide a sealed bell to convey divers from the habitat to the seabed without change of pressure. A remarkable feature of offshore oil and gas technology in the North Sea has been the willingness of all concerned to exchange information regarding R&D. This has had a major effect on the advance in technology over the last few years. As far as diving is concerned, it is to some extent 'Hobson's Choice'. Legal patents are difficult to achieve in this field, and the casual nature of diver employment to date has meant that ideas and techniques circulate almost as freely as the divers themselves. In addition, the advertis ing of the new technologies which one has to offer almost auto matically means disclosure of what otherwise might be secret.

Book excerpt: The early modern period was a particularly exciting and pioneering era for the development of diving technology. The beginnings of commercial diving, scientific diving and recreational diving can be found here. In the 17th century, basic research was carried out using the new experimental method, which demystified diving. Diving developed from a secret art to the practical application of scientific laws, today's diving technology or diving science. This work uses the diving bell as an example to show the dominant line of development in diving technology in this era. It represents a basic innovation on which all further designs are based. The development of the diving bell opened up extensive new technical territory and triggered a broad stream of subsequent innovations with far-reaching economic and social consequences. For example, the development of the closed helmet diving suit in the 19th century was a consequence of the knowledge gained from the diving bell. The period of this study is based on two key dates in the development of diving apparatus: After antiquity the first mention of a diving bell is from a manuscript from 1420 - as far as we know - and the year 1815 marks the beginning of series production and export of diving bells. This work therefore examines a complete innovation process that begins with a theoretical idea and ends with an international transfer into practice. In addition to contemporary literature, inventor's privileges on diving equipment are examined for the first time, which represent a partially unprocessed archive source on the history of diving. They will be indexed and evaluated in a large number of European archives in terms of content and in a broader overall view spanning three centuries. The question of which socio-cultural factors have an influence on innovations will also be examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diving Equipment: Choice, maintenance and function is a solid introduction to how diving gear works. It details the choices divers are faced with, and gives tips to help ensure it will last. If you want to better understand diving kit without having to dismantle it this book is the answer. It is filled with colourful illustrations and explanations of the hidden inner workings. Although it is therefore of obvious benefit to newer divers, Diving Equipment will also be of interest to qualified divers. Divemasters, instructors, those in need of a refresher and any non-diver who is curious about diving equipment are all likely to find out things they did not previously know. This book covers a wide range of diving gear including: accessories, BCDs, computers, cylinders, drysuits, fins, gauges, masks, rebreathers, regulators, sidemount, snorkels, stages, torches, weights, wetsuits, wings and more… Although many of the dives we make are in tropical regions, Diving Equipment takes an international perspective. It covers a range of conditions; discusses laws and regulations in different parts of the world; suggests what to look out for and what to ask locals about. If we are curious, we are often directed to look at manufacturers’ websites, with their limited descriptions of how equipment really works. This book aims to plug the gap. Diving Equipment also includes some less common and older items for interest and historical comparison, and finishes with some speculation on what the future might bring. Reviews ‘A must-have for newly qualified divers, but this excellent book shouldn’t be dismissed by those with more experience as a publication on the basics – it offers far more than that. The vast majority of us would benefit from a deeper understanding of the dive-gear on which we rely so heavily, what it does, how it works and how it should be used and maintained. This volume delivers such information in spadeloads, and should be on every diver’s bookshelf’– Diver magazine (read full review) ‘Some books you read and pass on, but this is one to keep and refer back to for many years to come’– British Diver (read full review) ‘One of the few diving titles out there that everyone should own and, in my view, should be a required text for those diving professionals working in instruction, supervision or sales’– Steve Warren, INON UK (read full review) ‘First thing I have to say about this book is that every sports diver should have one… Diving gear is not cheap and can become a serious investment, so knowing what to choose and how best to ensure its long and reliable life is to my mind definitely worth the cost of this book’– Scubaverse Second Edition of Diving Equipment This English-language second edition has been completely re-edited and enhanced. Originally published in Swedish in paperback and ebook, and in English as an ebook.

Book excerpt: To maintain quality in research output, providing the necessary new knowledge for our developing industries must be of prime importance to our community. This is an extremely difficult task when viewed in the context ofthe rapid rate of change being experienced within our national industrial scene. Collaborative research programmes designed to constantly monitor and improve the quality of output, through regular reporting and assessment of achieved goals against defined targets, can help the growth of our industry and benefit the rest of society. The government has established initiatives to encourage collaboration and the transfer of technology between the research and development domains. There are many signs that industry and the universities are making a concerted effort to adapt their working practices and relationships to meet the rapidly changing industrial environment. There are still many shortfalls and areas for improvement. Some of the extremes of government educational policy can, and will, seriously impair the evolution of, and benefits gained from, the collabo ration initiatives. These must be resisted by academe and industry alike if we are to make new advances against foreign competition. Joint R. and D. projects do work, and can be made to work. To achieve the steady growth of healthy and fruitful relationships they must, however, be given a good environment and a nourishing diet. REFERENCES 1.
