Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a long list of diseases and traumatic events that affect hip joint, but none as persistent, as elusive and with profound consequences as developmental dysplasia. For many centuries, we have been struggling with its consequences while trying to understand the reasons how and why such a stable joint eventually becomes dysfunctional and how to prevent it. Some of the greatest achievements in operative orthopaedics have been introduced in the effort to treat developmental dysplasia of the hip. This book offers a contemporary approach to developmental dysplasia of the hip, covering various clinically relevant aspects - historical and epidemiological considerations, biomechanical analysis, conservative methods and operative treatment procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference source containing all the relevant information about Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), for people who practice or utilize hip sonography for the early detection and treatment of DDH. It aims at improving the population screening for DDH, thus contributing to the elimination of the disorder and its devastating consequences. What makes this book different from existing literature is the fact that, apart from the (updated) information about the disorder (including development, pathophysiology, etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors etc.) and a short technical guidance, the reader will find all relevant knowledge to organize training and set up screening. This includes analysis of the rationale behind universal sonographic screening, a comparative presentation of the sonographic techniques, teaching course structure / management and setting up a screening service, including audit, quality control of the scans etc. Special chapters about radiological diagnosis, imaging the consequences of non-diagnosis or maltreatment of the disorder, clinical management of DDH cases and shaping the future of hip sonography, are also provided. The book will be of interest to any medical doctor, but in particular to those working in the fields of radiology, pediatrics, orthopedics or general medicine, sonographers performing hip scans, or specialist nurses dealing with DDH.

Book excerpt: Congenital hip disease (CHD) is the main cause of secondary osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip in young adults, which accounts for almost 40% of all cases of hip OA. Total hip replacement (THR) performed using optimal techniques can achieve a radical improvement in the quality of life of adult patients. This book offers in-depth coverage of all aspects of CHD in adults and its treatment. Relevant information is first provided on the basic anatomy of the hip and OA of the hip and on the classification, epidemiology, and natural history of CHD. The now limited role of femoral and pelvic osteotomies is carefully evaluated, and the use of THR is then considered in detail. Indications and preoperative planning are discussed, and the available operative techniques, analyzed. Clear guidance is provided on overcoming major technical difficulties, and the benefits of particular approaches and techniques are highlighted. More than 180 images and numerous case studies complement this reader-friendly text. The book will be an invaluable tool for orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists and radiologists.

Book excerpt: For more than 100 years, congenital dislocation of the hip has been an area of concern in orthopedics. This publications on the subject are al most too numerous to count. Yet our knowledge of the basic principles of congenital hip dislocation and its management is constantly being expanded by new research. In Germanspeaking countries, Kaiser pub lished the last comprehensive textbook on congenital hip dislocation in 1958, and Schlegel followed with a comprehensive handbook in 1961. In the Angloamerican world, Coleman's monograph was pub lished in 1978, Somerville's in 1982, and Wilkinson's in 1985. In 1982 Tachdjian compiled a volume on congenital hip dislocation that con tained contributions from 44 authorities. The purpose of the present book is to provide an overview of our pre sent state of knowledge of congenital hip dislocation, covering basic principles, diagnosis, methods of closed and open treatment, and indi cations. In the process, an attempt is made to trace progress in the field from its beginnings to the present time. Many authors describe the diagnosis and treatment of congenital hip dysplasia and dislocation in terms of specific age groups. We believe it is more prudent to take an individualized approach based on arthro graphic findings and the degree of severity of pathologic changes. Less emphasis is placed here on the management of patients by age group.

Book excerpt: This book represents the most advanced understanding of diagnosis and management of hip dysplasia in the young adult, written by the world’s leading experts and covering advanced imaging and biomechanical studies as well as latest surgical techniques. This is especially timely, as the field of hip preservation surgery is in constant evolution, and it is critical that surgeons and researchers combine their efforts to provide the best evidence-based knowledge to all health care providers evaluating and treating patients suffering from pre-arthritic hip pain. Not only does this book discuss the most up-to-date information on the etiology and natural history of hip dysplasia, as well as pathomechanics and traditional and advanced imaging, it also presents new conceptions of its classification and subsequent management. The focus throughout the book is that hip dysplasia is a problem of instability, where both the bony structure and the soft tissue envelope (i.e., capsule, ligaments and muscles) are at play. Moreover, although corrective osteotomies such as the peri-acetabular osteotomy will remain the dominant treatment option, non-surgical treatments as well as hip arthroscopy are now being increasingly recognized as useful adjuncts in order for our patients to return to their desired activities. Finally, as the longevity of joint replacement surgery has improved dramatically, this should be strongly considered in cases where the outcome of joint preserving surgery is not as predictable. Orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, physiatrists and physiotherapists alike will find this book a valuable resource when treating the young adult with symptomatic hip dysplasia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parents’ Guide to Hip Dysplasia is the only consumer guide to one of the most common birth defects in our nation! Now instead of having to comb through medical texts or scour the internet for information, concerned parents of children with hip dysplasia can have all the information they need for treating their children at their fingertips. Hip dysplasia affects 1 in 1,000 babies, either as developmental hip dysplasia (DDH) or congential hip dysplasia (CDH). With this condition, the child’s hip joint structure does not fit together normally, and the problem can grow worse as the child grows. If untreated, the condition can cause serious hip problems in adulthood. Fortunately, this condition responds well to medical treatment, and this book guides concerned parents through all of the options and obstacles of treating a child with hip dysplasia. The book covers hip anatomy, risk factors, how diagnosis is made, how to communicate with doctors about the condition, and covers harnesses, braces, casts, surgery, and potential complications for children ages 0-17. The book also addresses the special care needs of children with hip dysplasia and how to manage pain at home. It concludes with a list of resources. Author Betsy Miller was treated for hip dysplasia as a child, and she was inspired to write this book to provide support and information to parents in an accessible, reader-friendly format.
