Book excerpt: Understanding oxygen electrochemistry lies at the heart of enabling many advanced energy storage and conversion technologies such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and metal-air batteries. Aprotic Li-02 electrochemistry is receiving much attention in this regard, as the Li-0 2 battery theoretically offers higher energy densities than conventional Li-ion systems at potentially lower cost. This thesis explores the relationship between the energetics of 02 redox processes, and nucleation, growth, and reactivity of Li-O products in Li-02 batteries. Using a combination of rotating disk techniques and first principles calculations, we first assess the influence of 02- and Li+ ion solvation on the energetics of 02/02- and Li+/Li redox processes. By combining these results with measurements of the redox potential of the Li+-02 reaction intermediate, we show that both the coupling strength and solubility of the Li-0 complex are rationalized by the combined solvation of Li+ and 02- ions, with greater combined solvation increasing solubility but decreasing coupling energy, respectively. We next extend these results to studying the influence of applied potential and Li'-0 solvation on the participation of soluble and solid species during Li202 growth, using the rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) methods, respectively. As the applied potential increases, the reaction mechanism for Li20 2 formation switches from solution to surface-mediated, with the most likely pathways being Li+-02- disproportionation and 2e- transfer to 02, respectively. These insights are applied to understanding nucleation and growth of Li 20 2 in Li-02 batteries, using high surface area carbon-based electrodes as model systems. We first report, for the first time, the formation of large ~ 300 nm donut-shaped particles of Li20 2 at high applied potentials during Li-02 discharge, and smaller particles (

Book excerpt: Abstract: Although significant progress has been made in many aspects of the emerging aprotic Li-O2 battery system, an in-depth understanding of the oxygen reactions is still underway. The oxygen reactions occurring in the positive electrode distinguish Li-O2 batteries from the conventional Li-ion cells and play a crucial role in the Li-O2 cell's performance (capacity, rate capability, and cycle life). Recent advances in fundamental studies of oxygen reactions in aprotic Li-O2 batteries are reviewed, including the reaction route, kinetics, morphological evolution of Li2 O2, and charge transport within Li2 O2 . Prospects are also provided for future fundamental investigations of Li-O2 chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrification of transportation requires cost-effective energy storage systems with high energy densities. Aprotic sodium-oxygen batteries offer great promise for advanced energy storage as these batteries possess lower charge overpotential and higher reversibility, when compared to their lithium-oxygen battery cousins. To bring aprotic sodium-oxygen batteries closer to commercialization, a deeper understanding into the underlying cell chemistry and its limitations is required. In this thesis, phase-transfer catalysis is shown to be responsible for the growth and dissolution of cubic sodium superoxide crystals and the reversible cell capacity. In the absence of phase-transfer catalysis, quasi-amorphous sodium superoxide films are formed, and cells exhibit negligible capacity. Similar effects were also observed in lithium-oxygen cells. Following this result, direct evidence of solution-mediated superoxide transport in the sodium-oxygen cell is revealed. Using ESR spectroscopy coupled with parallel SEM studies, hydroperoxyl (HO2) radicals were successfully spin-trapped via reaction with 5,5-Dimethyl-pyrroline N-oxide at different electrochemical stages, allowing monitoring of superoxide production and consumption during cycling. On discharge, the variation of superoxide content in the electrolyte, and its correlation with the crystallization of cubic sodium superoxide agrees with the classical LaMer mechanism of nucleation and growth. On charge, the oxidation of sodium superoxide, through reverse solution processes, reduces the superoxide content in the electrolyte and lowers the charge overpotential. Interestingly, the addition of H2O in the electrolyte significantly increases the concentration of soluble superoxide. Furthermore, carbon-centered/oxygen-centered alkyl radical intermediates are identified, and they arise from the attack of HO2 intermediates on the diglyme solvent. Finally, the growth of sodium dendrites on the anode and the electrochemically inert by-products that passivate the cathode are revealed as the primary causes for early cell termination of sodium-oxygen batteries. The research presented here leads to a new understanding into the aprotic sodium-oxygen chemistry that, significantly, extends to lithium-oxygen batteries and explains their different behaviour.

Book excerpt: Explains the current state of the science and points the way to technological advances First developed in the late 1980s, lithium-ion batteries now power everything from tablet computers to power tools to electric cars. Despite tremendous progress in the last two decades in the engineering and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries, they are currently unable to meet the energy and power demands of many new and emerging devices. This book sets the stage for the development of a new generation of higher-energy density, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries by advancing battery chemistry and identifying new electrode and electrolyte materials. The first chapter of Lithium Batteries sets the foundation for the rest of the book with a brief account of the history of lithium-ion battery development. Next, the book covers such topics as: Advanced organic and ionic liquid electrolytes for battery applications Advanced cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries Metal fluorosulphates capable of doubling the energy density of lithium-ion batteries Efforts to develop lithium-air batteries Alternative anode rechargeable batteries such as magnesium and sodium anode systems Each of the sixteen chapters has been contributed by one or more leading experts in electrochemistry and lithium battery technology. Their contributions are based on the latest published findings as well as their own firsthand laboratory experience. Figures throughout the book help readers understand the concepts underlying the latest efforts to advance the science of batteries and develop new materials. Readers will also find a bibliography at the end of each chapter to facilitate further research into individual topics. Lithium Batteries provides electrochemistry students and researchers with a snapshot of current efforts to improve battery performance as well as the tools needed to advance their own research efforts.

Unfortunately, no economical and technically feasible method for the solution of this severe problem is presently available. But electrochemistry is a favourite candidate from an engineering point of view. It promises the highest energy densities of all possible alternatives. If this is true, there will be a proportionality between the amount of electricity to be stored and the possible voltage, together with the mass of materials which make this storage possible. Insofar it is a matter of material science to develop adequate systems. Electricity is by far the most important secondary energy source. The present production rate, mainly in the thermal electric power stations, is in the order of 1.3 TW. Rechargeable batteries (RB) are of widespread use in practice for electroenergy storage and supply. The total capacity of primary and rechargeable batteries being exploited is the same as that of the world electric power stations. However, the important goal in the light of modem energy technology, namely the economical storage of large amounts of electricity for electric vehicles, electric route transport, load levelling, solar energy utilization, civil video & audio devices, earth and spatial communications, etc. will not be met by the presently available systems. Unless some of the new emerging electrochemical systems are established up to date, RB's based on aqueous acidic or alkali accumulators are mainly produced today.
