Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vatsyayana's Commentary on the Nyaya-sutra is one of classical India's most important philosophical works. This Guide offers both a map and interpretation of this challenging canonical text, suitable for any student or novice reader. Treating them as a single hybrid text, the Nyaya-sutra with Vatsyayana's commentary systematizes in skeletal form centuries of ancient Indian philosophical developments concerning logic, epistemology, and dialectics, while also defending a realist categorial metaphysics. It offers a number of epistemological and methodological insights that inform intellectual inquiry in the Subcontinent for over a millennium. Vatsyayana's Commentary also provides sophisticated arguments for distinct positions in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, and value theory that stand amongst the best contributions to world philosophy. This guide, accessible to students and researchers not familiar with classical Indian philosophy, provides a distilled, accessible understanding of the major scholarly, historical, and philosophical issues that inform the Commentary, while unpacking its philosophical content such that it speaks to modern readers. It also illustrates the way that the Commentary may serve as a lens through which to view the formative period of classical Indian philosophy.

Book excerpt: In this study of the Nyaya Philosophy as propounded by Gautama and explained by Vatsyayana and Uddyotakara, the author has examined the empirical foundations of its theory of cognition and proof and the validity of the conclusions based on them. The analysis reveals that the Nyaya theory does not warrant the nature, career and destiny of the self (atman). The conceptual framework rests upon the questionable assumption that not only is the experience of the expert (apta) incorrigible but his communication of that experience is authentic. The framework can only be understood in its social context. The author maintains that Indian religious and philosophical thought must be judged not only in the light of criteria generally accepted in these fields but also in the broad perspective of the social and intellectual background of the thinkers usually regarded as rsis beyond the pale of society. The study is both a challenge to the traditional presentation of the Indian cultural heritage and a constructive hypothesis for further research and reappraisal on new lines.

Book excerpt: Description: Nyayakusumanjali, one of the most important anchor-works of the Nyaya philosophy, is composed by Udayanacarya, the great ancient Indian thinker, commentator, author and master stylist in recondite Sanskrit prose. This work is one of the two major magna opera of Udayanacarya, the other being Atmatattvaviveka, which is wholly devoted to a thorough criticism of all the basic doctrines of Buddhism. Unlike Atmatattvaviveka, Nyayakusumanjali is primarily concerned with the exposition and argumentative defence of the Nyaya doctrines-especially those relating to its methodology-against the corresponding but opposed doctrines of Mimamsa and Vaisesika. A unique feature of this work is that it brings forward a large number of inferential proofs to establish the reality of god, which is almost a totally-neglected topic in all the earlier basic works on Nyaya. Even the aphorisms of Gotama, supposed to be the primary source of Nyaya philosophy, make only a passing and oblique reference to god in a single aphorism. Udayanacarya is perhaps the first great Naiyayika of ancient India who introduced theism in a big way both in the Nyaya and the Vaisesika schools of Indian philosophy. In the first volume of Nyayakusumanjali, Professor Dravid has translated and explained the text of Nyaya kusumanjali, passage by passage, while in the second volume, he has presented an analytical critical survey of the contents of the whole work.

Book excerpt: Often translated simply as "logic," the Sanskrit word nyāya means "rule of reasoning" or "method of reasoning." Texts from the school of classical Indian philosophy that bears this name are concerned with cognition, reasoning, and the norms that govern rational debate. This translation of selections from the early school of Nyāya focuses on its foundational text, the Nyāya-sūtra (c. 200 CE), with excerpts from the early commentaries. It will be welcomed by specialists and non-specialists alike seeking an accessible text that both represents some of the best of Indian philosophical thought and can be integrated into courses on Indian philosophy, religion, and intellectual culture.
