The design and implementation of such communication schemes, and more generally of MANETs application, can be achieved using two different ways: either by building a real network, or by resorting to modelling and simulation. In the context of this work, where city-scale environment were considered, simulation was hence unavoidable. We opted for developping a custom simulator called Madhoc. Madhoc captures the major characteristics of DTNs, by providing an extendable set of mobility models as well as a framework for the defnition of new applications. Madhoc was primarily used for the investigation of the broadcasting issue. In this specific context, networks composed of thousands devices using a variety of wireless technologies were considered. These networks are partitioned and exhibit heterogeneous densities. This led to the design of a bandwidth-efficient broadcasting protocol called DFCN.

In this type of network, nodes are both source of information as well as they participate in relaying the information to their final destinations. Due to the broadcast nature of wireless transmission, mobile ad hoc networks require an effective MAC protocol to share the medium. In recent years, many MAC protocols have been proposed in the literature for this purpose, such as Dual Busy Tone Multiple Access (DBTMA) [3] protocol. In this thesis, we first propose to modify DBTMA protocol through inserting a third busy tone, BTd (data transmit busy tone) to protect data transmissions and the modified protocol is referred to as Triple-BTMA (T-BTMA). Second, we show that the existing performance model of DBTMA fails to consider the effects of multi-cell overlapping interference. The main contribution of this thesis is development of a performance analysis of T-BTMA protocol that takes into account properly the multi-cell overlapping interference. We show that our model may also be adopted for most Ready-to-Send/Clear-to-Send (RTS/CTS) based MAC protocols. We develop a simulation environment to validate approximations in our mathematical model. We find that theoretical results are in agreement with those of simulations. Finally, we extend our model into power-controlled networks and it is shown that a proper power control can lead to an ideal channel throughput.

Book excerpt: Mobile ad hoc network has been widely deployed in support of the communications in hostile environment without conventional networking infrastructure, especially in the environments with critical conditions such as emergency rescue activities in burning building or earth quick evacuation. However, most of the existing ad hoc based broadcasting schemes either rely on GPS location or topology information or angle-of-arrival (AoA) calculation or combination of some or all to achieve high reachability. Therefore, these broadcasting schemes cannot be directly used in critical environments such as battlefield, sensor networks and natural disasters due to lack of node location and topology information in such critical environments. This research work first begins by analyzing the broadcast coverage problem and node displacement form ideal locations problem in ad hoc networks using theoretical analysis. Then, this research work proposes an efficient broadcast relaying scheme, called Random Directional Broadcasting Relay (RDBR), which greatly reduces the number of retransmitting nodes and end-to-end delay while achieving high reachability. This is done by selecting a subset of neighboring nodes to relay the packet using directional antennas without relying on node location, network topology and complex angle-of-arrival (AoA) calculations. To further improve the performance of the RDBR scheme in complex environments with high node density, high node mobility and high traffic rate, an improved RDBR scheme is proposed. The improved RDBR scheme utilizes the concept of gaps between neighboring sectors to minimize the overlap between selected relaying nodes in high density environments. The concept of gaps greatly reduces both contention and collision and at the same time achieves high reachability. The performance of the proposed RDBR schemes has been evaluated by comparing them against flooding and Distance-based schemes. Simulation results show that both proposed RDBR schemes achieve high reachability while reducing the number of retransmitting nodes and end-to-end delay especially in high density environments. Furthermore, the improved RDBR scheme achieves better performance than RDBR in high density and high traffic environment in terms of reachability, end-to-end delay and the number of retransmitting nodes.

Soon, just like the Internet empowered a whole new world of applications for personal computers, the development and deployment of robust ubiquitous wireless networks will enable many new and excitingfuturistic applications. Certain to be an important part of this future is a class of networks known as "mobile ad hoc networks." Mobile ad hoc networks (or simply"ad hoc networks") are local-area networks formed "on the spot" between collocated wireless devices. These devices self-organize by sharing information with their neigh-bors to establish communication pathways whenever and wherever they are. For adhoc networks to succeed, however, new protocols must be developed that are capable of adapting to their dynamic nature. Inthis dissertation, we present a number of adaptive protocols that are designed for this purpose. We investigate new link layer mechanisms that dynamically monitor and adapt to changes in link quality, including a protocol that uses common control messages to form a tight feedback control loop for adaptation of the link data rate to best match the channel conditions perceived by the receiver. We also investigate routing protocols that adapt route selection according to network characteristics. In particular, we present two on-demand routing protocols that are designed to take advantage of the presence of multirate links. We then investigate the performance of TCP, showing how communication outages caused by link failures and routing delays can be very detrimental to its performance. In response, we present a solution to this problem that uses explicit feedback messages from the link layer about link failures to adapt TCP's behavior. Finally, we show how link failures in heterogeneous networks containing links with widely varying bandwidth and delay can cause repeated "modal" changes in capacity that TCP is slow to detect. We then present a modifed version of TCP that is capable of more rapidly detecting and adapting to these changes.
