Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste stabilization ponds have been used for many years as primary, secondary, and even tertiary sewage treatment devices; however, data for their economical and efficient design and operation have been lacking. The problem of developing rational design criteria for stabilization ponds was attacked on a broad basis; information from prior and contemporary investigators was collected and studied, factors thought to be important in stabilization pond processes were investigated in laboratory models and in outdoor pilot plants, and data reported since 1950 on pond installations at 188 communities throughout the State of Texas were compiled for statistical analysis. From these three sources of information along with certain theoretical considerations, empirical relations were formulated for the design and operation of a specific type of waste stabilization pond within a certain range of climatic conditions. The type of stabilization pond finally adopted for study was one in which the algal population density is low and bacterial stabilization of organic waste materials takes place largely under anaerobic conditions, since surface reaeration and photosynthetic oxygenation cannot satisfy the imposed biochemical oxygen demand in such systems. Design criteria are summarized. (auth).

This international version is comprised by six textbooks giving a state-of-the-art presentation of the science and technology of biological wastewater treatment. Other titles in the series are: Volume 1: Waste Stabilisation Ponds Volume; 2: Basic Principles of Wastewater Treatment; Volume 4: Anaerobic Reactors; Volume 5: Activated Sludge and Aerobic Biofilm Reactors; Volume 6: Sludge Treatment and Disposal
Book Synopsis Notes on the Design and Operation of Waste Stabilization Ponds in Warm Climates of Developing Countries by : J. P. Arthur

This book was released on 1983 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper acknowledges that water carriage sewerage systems are not always the most appropriate sanitation solution for the disposal of liquid domestic wastes in developing countries. However, where water carriage systems are proposed, the first treatment option which should always be considered is the use of stabilization ponds, because in many instances, they represent the most cost effective and efficient way of treating domestic sewage flows. The paper results from a review of pond systems installed in six countries and concludes that: (i) designs differ widely; (ii) maximum use is not made of anaerobic ponds or the reuse potential of effluents; (iii) pond systems are frequently grossly overdesigned; and (iv) the designs are not responsive to the incremental growth encountered in LDCs. Practical design criteria are given for pond systems over a range of ambient temperature conditions and end use requirements together with notes on start up procedures, operation and trouble shooting. The recommendations are derived in part from the Israeli experience where considerable use is made of treated sewage effluent for irrigation purposes.

Book Synopsis Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Developing Countries by : Duncan Mara
Download or read book Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Developing Countries written by Duncan Mara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affordable and effective domestic wastewater treatment is a critical issue in public health and disease prevention around the world, particularly so in developing countries which often lack the financial and technical resources necessary for proper treatment facilities. This practical guide provides state-of-the-art coverage of methods for domestic wastewater treatment and provides a foundation to the practical design of wastewater treatment and re-use systems. The emphasis is on low-cost, low-energy, low-maintenance, high-performance 'natural' systems that contribute to environmental sustainability by producing effluents that can be safely and profitably used in agriculture for crop irrigation and/or in aquaculture, for fish and aquatic vegetable pond fertilization. Modern design methodologies, with worked design examples, are described for waste stabilization ponds, wastewater storage and treatment reservoirs; constructed wetlands, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors, biofilters, aerated lagoons and oxidation ditches. This book is essential reading for engineers, academics and upper-level and graduate students in engineering, wastewater management and public health, and others interested in sustainable and cost-effective technologies for reducing wastewater-related diseases and environmental damage.
Book Synopsis Pond Treatment Technology by : Andrew Shilton
Download or read book Pond Treatment Technology written by Andrew Shilton and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pond treatment technology is used in tens of thousands of applications serving many millions of people across the globe - why? Simply because it is efficient and effective. While pond treatment technology offers relative simplicity in its application, it incorporates a host of complex and diverse mechanisms that work to treat and cleanse polluted waters before their return to our environment. This book offers a comprehensive review of the pond technology field including the newest ideas and latest findings. Topics covered include: The physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the pond environment; A detailed review of pond treatment mechanisms and performance; Comprehensive guidance on pond design, operation and upgrade options; A range of chapters summarising new and emerging pond technologies; The integration of ponds with wetlands and aquaculture systems and their use as storage reservoirs; Special applications of pond technology in cold climates, for agricultural wastes and for treatment of stormwater. The objective of this book is to get this wealth of knowledge "out there" to the users to ensure the continuous improvement and ongoing success of this crucial technology.

Ponds created for treatment, known as stabilization ponds, model the physical and biochemical interactions that occur in natural ponds. Easy to build and manage, stabilization ponds can accommodate large fluctuations in flow, and provide results that are
