Book excerpt: Statistically-designed factorial experiments were conducted using 'synthetic' waters to examine the effects of various physical/chemical parameters on chlorine dioxide-related disinfection by-product formation. 2-level factorial experiments were then performed on 7 surface waters and a groundwater collected in Ontario to develop statistically-based model equations capable of predicting chlorine dioxide consumption, chlorite and chlorate formation when dosing with chlorine dioxide. These equations were developed in terms of pH, temperature, chlorine dioxide concentration, reaction time and water organic content. Interaction effects involving the aforementioned parameters were also included in the model equations, improving the accuracy of the predictive equations in fitting measured levels as evaluated through internal and external validations. Chlorine-dioxide dose and water organic content were found to be key parameters in developing the predictive equations. Improved correlations between chlorine dioxide consumption, chlorite and chlorate formation with changes in UV$\sb{254}$ were found to exist on a site-and parameter-specific basis.

Book excerpt: The application of chlorine dioxide to drinking water treatment was studied at bench- and pilot-scale during this research. The impact of water quality parameters including bromide level, pH, chlorine dioxide dose and purity, and secondary disinfectant type on the formation of disinfection by-product (DBP) was examined by performing 2-level factorial experiments DBPs measured during the experiments included chlorite, chlorate, trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, bromate and adsorbable organic halides. Results showed that both pH and chlorine dioxide dose had the greatest impact on chlorite and chlorate. In addition, site-specific mathematical models which incorporated disinfectant chemistry characteristics, inactivation kinetics and contactor hydraulics to accurately estimate the inactivation of stressed and non-stressed microbial indicators (MS 2 phages and 'Bacillus subtilis' spores) for ' Giardia lamblia' and 'Cryptosporidium parvum' were developed. Results revealed that filtration/physical stress damaged the microbial cell membrane thereby rendering the microorganisms more susceptible to chlorine dioxide inactivation.

Book excerpt: This reference book from American Water Works Research Foundation pulls together the current scientific knowledge on chlorine dioxide and its applications in drinking water treatment. It provides the most current scientific information about chlorine dioxide, along with operational practices, analytical expertise, and utility experiences through case histories as well as the expertise of individual authors. The objectives of this research project were threefold: To produce a current reference book with a global view of the use of chlorine dioxide, encompassing scientific, technological, and operational approaches used in drinking water treatment in developed nations; To compare and contrast European and North American practices and their experiences with chlorine dioxide production, applications, and regulations; and To update knowledge about the current technologies of production, process control, and residual monitoring in plants and distribution systems. First published in 2009, it is only now available to the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking water disinfection has markedly reduced diseases causes by waterborne pathogenic microorganisms. However, an unintended consequence of disinfection and/or oxidation processes is the generation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) which are formed from the reactions of disinfectants/oxidants with water matrix components. This volume of the Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry Handbook presents recent advances about the formation, identification, and quantification of inorganic and organic DBPs during oxidative processes. The book begins with a first chapter reviewing the most recent non-targeted screening approaches and workflows to characterize DBPs using low-, high-, and ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. The second chapter discusses the analysis of inorganic chloramines in waters using on-site and/or in-lab analytical methods. The third chapter provides an overview of the current knowledge about the mechanisms of chlorine dioxide reactions and byproducts formation. The fourth chapter presents some fundamental and practical aspects about ozonation processes in water treatment and provides an overview about ozone reaction mechanisms and byproducts formation. The fifth chapter focuses on the reactivity of halide ions, particularly bromide and iodide, with common oxidants and the role they play in determining the speciation of DBPs in treated waters. The chapter also presents strategies to mitigate the formation of DBPs during oxidation processes. Finally, the last chapter tackles the topic of DBPs formation during potable water reuse. It discusses the formation of DBPs of major concern in both memebrane-based and non-membrane-based potable water reuse treatment schemes. Researchers, water treatment specialists, and regulators will find in this book a valuable and compact resource on several key topics regarding the formation, identification, quantification, and mitigation of DBPs. Identification and quantification of known and unknown DBPs Formation of DBPs during different disinfection/oxidation processes DBPs of concern in new technologies and/or new applications of existing technologies in water treatment

Without doubt, water and wastewater management are among the greatest challenges of our century, and there is also no doubt that the challenges posed by climate change will become even greater. However, most efforts, especially in developing countries but also in the so-called developed countries, have been less than optimal or not optimal at all. In particular, there are still too many people who have to live without clean water and decent sanitation. Today, 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water and wastewater, and 4.2 billion people lack safely managed sanitation services. The question, why this is so and why in many cases in developing countries, is discussed in this book among other urgent water and wastewater management issues. The publication of this book is the start of a book series that in more detail critically reviews, discusses, and analyzes the water and wastewater situation and management in different regions and countries worldwide.

Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.
